sure, you can open the log in pretty much any text editor without the password! reading the log without the password on the other hand, is virtually impossible. Is it possible to read encrypted logs with helper programs without a password?

No there isn't. The password for chat log encryption isn't stored anywhere. NanaFreak was right in saying that there is absolutely no way to access an encrypted chat log without the password. There is a way to gain access to your chat log files. It involves opening up the registry, and then deleting the password values for Messenger Plus! Live, however I do not know the exact way.
