Are you referring to "contact renaming" (which is a Messenger feature and still available in WLM2011) or nicknames here? The nicknames do actually still exist in WLM2011 but you just can't see them. If you had to put a code in front of their '[i]nicknames[/i]' then it had nothing todo with the skin.... You can do this without any skin because that is a basic feature of Messenger Plus!.
