Is there a new SP for XP?*-)

RE: Windows XP SP2? by musicalmidget on 02-07-2004 at 11:21 AM

This is the first I've heard of a new service pack, and it doesn't show up on Windows Update, nor on Microsoft.com from what I can see.

Could it be a fake? :dodgy:

RE: Windows XP SP2? by Mnjul on 02-07-2004 at 11:23 AM

It's going to be released this summer :-/

SP2 is said to have many new features (besides many hotfixes that Micro$oft made XP have), such as Download Manager for IE (which was introduced in Longhorn). I personally want to see the Concurrent Login Session (i.e. User A is connected through Remote Desktop, and User B is a console user and they can use the computer at the same time. Currently only one user can "use" the computer at the same time while others' work/processes are saved in memory).

Well, the currently leaked build is 2055 I think.

RE: Windows XP SP2? by Ashl on 02-07-2004 at 11:40 AM

Yeah it also going to include a popup blocker although if youwant to use one of those before theni expect it would be better using google rather than the MSN toolbar as i expect that will just send u adverts!

RE: Windows XP SP2? by tomfletcherman on 02-07-2004 at 12:26 PM

Sounds good, can't wait and I think microsoft should have been able to pause downloads a long time ago...

True (Y)  As for two users on one computer at one time

doesnt that break the license agreement?

RE: Windows XP SP2? by M-Head on 02-07-2004 at 05:20 PM

Cool, I'll defnitely be using that when it comes out!

RE: Windows XP SP2? by bach_m on 02-07-2004 at 05:21 PM

i think it'll be very close to recquired.

RE: Windows XP SP2? by M-Head on 02-07-2004 at 05:35 PM

how big will the service pack be though?

RE: Windows XP SP2? by bach_m on 02-07-2004 at 05:43 PM

as big as service pack 1, if not bigger. it has all of the security fixes since SP1, as well as alot of other features. maybe 100MB, if not more

RE: Windows XP SP2? by M-Head on 02-07-2004 at 05:53 PM

100mb? not too bad... 56k warning though, lol. Maybe they will incorporate the download manager so that it works with windows updates as well...maybe....

RE: Windows XP SP2? by lylesback2 on 02-07-2004 at 06:01 PM

never heard of it... :S  but popup blocker... and toolbars... stupid idea :P

RE: Windows XP SP2? by bach_m on 02-07-2004 at 06:02 PM

of course its gonna be big. u cant be suprised by that. its a major part of an OS, with like a gazillion bug fixes incorporated in it(remember those almost daily updates in september-november??) and an updated version of Windows Update (i mightget to beta test it :)) and IE improvements. this is gonna be big. and its got an improved Firewall, which is turned on by default (ur computer wont let you log in until its configured), and might not be so simple to turn off (it MUST be possible tho). so expect something big.

RE: Windows XP SP2? by M-Head on 02-07-2004 at 06:08 PM

lol
I already have a firewall, so im gonna go trying to disable it. How restricting is the firewall though? I have never used it.

RE: Windows XP SP2? by bach_m on 02-07-2004 at 06:11 PM

its like a regualr firewall. better than the one in there currently

RE: Windows XP SP2? by tomfletcherman on 02-07-2004 at 06:19 PM

One of my work mates will get the sp2 if its big nd give it me on cd

RE: Windows XP SP2? by ryan92 on 02-07-2004 at 08:44 PM

Well actually this service has been around for a while, just in beta test right now due for release in May 2004. As a beta tester for it I can tell you right now there is no download manager in yet (N), but there is a pop-up blocker, a lockdown mode like Windows Server 2003, a more restrictive firewall like Zone Alarm, and many other security features. As for size this beta (2055) it was 216 mb (Full, Not Express). As for CC seissons they aren't enabled by default, but can be enabled via regedit. If its not against the rules I'll post some screenshots later on.

RE: Windows XP SP2? by ryan92 on 02-07-2004 at 08:57 PM

At this link you can see a screnshot of Service Pack 2 (2055)
Service Pack 2 Screenshot

RE: Windows XP SP2? by GiantSpider on 02-07-2004 at 09:32 PM

isn't giving screenshots away a breech of ur BETA agreement? there shud be a express version like there was 4 SP1. (doesn't bother me im on broadband)

RE: Windows XP SP2? by bach_m on 02-07-2004 at 09:46 PM

i think there will be.

RE: Windows XP SP2? by Dane on 02-07-2004 at 10:13 PM

interesting...So it will be huge, I hope it has a resume feature, I have 56K.

RE: Windows XP SP2? by frog on 02-07-2004 at 10:16 PM

i wanna be beta tester? :P

RE: Windows XP SP2? by bach_m on 02-07-2004 at 10:32 PM

RE: Windows XP SP2? by frog on 02-07-2004 at 10:35 PM

RE: Windows XP SP2? by Dane on 02-07-2004 at 10:55 PM

I've been hearing that it has a "180 Day License", after that long it stops working or something?

RE: Windows XP SP2? by bach_m on 02-07-2004 at 11:28 PM

oh. nm then (a)

RE: Windows XP SP2? by Dane on 02-07-2004 at 11:30 PM

Doesnt that mean it expires after 180 Days?

RE: Windows XP SP2? by ryan92 on 02-08-2004 at 06:37 AM

Well techenically that was a breach of the eula, but really I'm not showing anything most people can't find anywhere else aka Paul Thrott's Supersite for Windows has way more screenshots and a full review. And as to the 180 day license, this is what the eula says;

180 Day License

Microsoft Windows XP SP2 Professional

Microsoft Windows XP SP2 Home Edition

YOUR RIGHT TO USE THE SOFTWARE SHALL BE
EFFECTIVE FROM THE DATE YOU FIRST
INSTALL THE SOFTWARE ON ANY DEVICE
FOR A PERIOD OF ONE HUNDRED AND
EIGHTY (180) DAYS. THE SOFTWARE IS TIME
AND WILL NOT FUNCTION UPON
EXPIRATION OF THE 180 DAY PERIOD.
NOTICE OF EXPIRATION WILL NOT ACTIVELY
BE GIVEN, SO YOU NEED TO PLAN...

There is also a express version but it is better to get the full because it includes everything and allows you to slipstream:D

RE: Windows XP SP2? by Hank on 02-08-2004 at 07:18 AM

what i dont like from what i have read so far about SP2 it will put on ur Firewall by default, the question is or will be, will u be able to turn it off if one wants to use another firewall, if not this may stop me from installing SP2, pop-up blockers very good, shoulda been in windowsXP from day 1

RE: Windows XP SP2? by sock on 02-08-2004 at 08:09 AM

Seems like a nice update.... I'd love to get rid of all of these Hotfixes in the "Add/remove Programs" list... So messy. :p

BTW, do new Windows XP CDs include SP1? And will it be the case with SP2? :-/

Now for some replies... :p

 Don't tell me, your Windows XP activation code starts with "FCKGW"? The "GW" in that code stands for "Gates, William", and I think you can guess what the first three letters stand for. ;) Not that I would know anything about it. *whistles innocently*

There's no way on Earth you won't be able to disable the XP firewall and/or use a different firewall. As for pop-up blockers, they weren't popular at all when Windows XP was released. What annoys me is that they include such small and browser-specific features in a huge OS update, instead of releasing IE 6.1 or something. *sigh,* Microsoft's good old economic tactics...
RE: Windows XP SP2? by surfichris on 02-08-2004 at 08:15 AM

1. Yes, there will be the "express" and "network/redistribution" installs available for download in the final release. They will both contain the same features, though the network version (like ryan said) will allow you to slipstream cd's.

2. The built in firewall can be disabled.

3. sock, yes most new copies of XP sold in stores contain Service Pack One, it should also be listed on the side. And according to the WindowsBeta website this will also be the case with SP2 when released.

4. The current network install package is over 200mb, however by the final release it should be smaller.

5. Sockie, just so you know, Microsoft intends to scrap IE as a separate browser and only include it with windows releases :p

Chris

RE: Windows XP SP2? by sock on 02-08-2004 at 08:22 AM

1. a. Which of these installs be available on Windows Update?
    b. What's slipstream? o_O  The only "slipstream" I know is a weather phenomenon. :-/

5. And it shows... that's why I'm complaining. :'(

* sock slaps Microsoft around a bit with a large trout.

RE: Windows XP SP2? by surfichris on 02-08-2004 at 08:31 AM

1. a. windows update will do the 'express' install. The network/redistribution kit will be for download on the MS site normally.

b. slipstreamming is the process of incorporating the fixes and the service pack into an installable XP cd so that it includes them and you dont need to install them again..

RE: Windows XP SP2? by bach_m on 02-08-2004 at 01:31 PM

5. Maybe this is an invitation for ppl to start moving to other browsers......

RE: Windows XP SP2? by M-Head on 02-08-2004 at 02:19 PM

That slipstream thing sounds cool, I think I'll like that idea :D

Especially for when I go through a stage of wanting to format my drive many times, lol.

Lol yeah I also have an *ahem* special copy of windows XP.But we shouldnt actually talk about these things here...Also my code also starts with "FCKGW"I knew what FCK and G mean but i didnt knew what W means...
RE: Windows XP SP2? by bach_m on 02-08-2004 at 03:19 PM

William, as in long form of Bill

RE: Windows XP SP2? by user2319 on 02-10-2004 at 07:36 PM

what's with that Fuck Bill/William? :-/

RE: Windows XP SP2? by sock on 02-10-2004 at 10:17 PM

It's the first part of the most common pirate activation code for Windows XP. It's been around since XP was released (and even before that;)), so Microsoft blocked the SP1 update for the people who use it.

RE: Windows XP SP2? by bach_m on 02-10-2004 at 10:31 PM

i'm gonna be beta testing SP2, legally :)

RE: Windows XP SP2? by ryan92 on 02-24-2004 at 03:30 AM

Horary...for us Windows XP Service Pack 2 Beta testers. There a new build available to download now with loads of fixes and new features. One of them is a Security Center like Mcafee Security Center, which informs of your firewall, auto-update and anti-virus Status. If you want to check out some pictures of it, check at Neowin and I should have some up tomorrow once its finish downloading.

Tester Beware of the network install size: 345.4MB. [Hence the big size because it can be applied to Media Center Edition and Tablet PC's]

In addition, here a link for anyone who wants an UXtheme.dll for it.

RE: Windows XP SP2? by bnevets27 on 03-28-2004 at 09:06 AM

well i had a link to download it off micro$oft, didn't tho b/c i didn't want it scrtewin my comp, being beta and all, is it decently safe, like not toooo bugy and does it actually have this 180day thing?

RE: Windows XP SP2? by Mnjul on 03-28-2004 at 10:42 AM

The new version should be compatible as TGTSoft announced 2 days ago:

quote:
http://www.tgtsoft.com/
now with Win XP SP2 RC1 (2096)

RE: Windows XP SP2? by GiantSpider on 03-28-2004 at 12:22 PM

uhm just remember that this is still BETA n its got bugs

RE: Windows XP SP2? by bach_m on 03-28-2004 at 02:26 PM

unless ur a tester, theres no reason to try and upgrade. its not drastically different, and no REAL feature changes. i  dont see why everyone wants to rush to get it.

RE: Windows XP SP2? by GiantSpider on 03-28-2004 at 07:12 PM

Well theres the Firewall, Pop-up blocker, Other security related stuff. Windows Update V5.
