Windows 2000 & Windows NT 4 Source Code Leaks by Test Zero on 02-12-2004 at 08:56 PM

Neowin has learned of shocking and potentially devastating news. It would appear that two packages are circulating on the internet, one being the source code to Windows 2000, and the other being the source code to Windows NT. At this time, it is hard to establish whether or not full code has leaked, and this will undoubtedly remain the situation until an attempt is made to compile them. Microsoft are currently unavailable for comment surrounding this leak so we have no official response from them at the time of writing.

This leak is a shock not only to Neowin, but to the wider IT industry. The ramifications of this leak are far reaching and devastating. This reporter does not wish to be sensationalist, but the number of industries and critical systems that are based around these technologies that could be damaged by new exploits found in this source code is something that doesn't bare thinking about.

We ask that for the wider benefit of the IT community that members and readers support Microsoft by forwarding anything they know about the leak to the Microsoft's Anti-Piracy department.

AGH!!!

Cover Your Asses!!

(If that's true... MyDoom may be just a children-joke compared to what could happen if this piece of news is true)

RE: Windows 2000 & Windows NT 4 Source Code Leaks by Guido on 02-12-2004 at 10:18 PM

First, it's impossible that the full code could have been leaked. It's several GBs and noone at microsoft (except very trusted people) have access to even significant parts of the code.

When I read that at neowin I could do no thing but laugh and imagine a yellow background with chrongues everywhere... :lol:

Neowin just was too dramatic on this one IMO...

Microsoft would prob. have to overhaul windows if that is true :S On the bright side, they will find a lot of flaws, and correct them if a virus attack occurs...lol...:P

RE: Windows 2000 & Windows NT 4 Source Code Leaks by EvilSeph on 02-13-2004 at 01:09 AM

Actually, it's quite easy to get access to Microsoft source. They freely release it to universities, organisations etc.. once they've signed an agreement not to release the code.

Note: not FULL source :p

* dotNorma imagines....

Bill Gates is being escorted by gaurds and army planes to an underground tunnel. Hey inserts a key turns it , Enters a password , has his eye scanned and his voice recognized. He than walks down and emits 5 different passwords to five different gaurds and is let into a room with 17 computers. Each computer holds bits of the windows code and is not connected to the internet. They have 600000000000000000000000000000000000000000000gb encryption :P

That makes no sense. BBC or Reuters saying "Neowin.net posted that the code might have been leaked" doesn't warrant anything :P

Then Bill, while sending an e-mail to his friend Linus Torvalds, accidentally attaches the wrong file in the message.

30 minutes later, Neowin posts a sticky article about Windows' source code leaked :P

RE: Windows 2000 & Windows NT 4 Source Code Leaks by user2319 on 02-13-2004 at 08:54 PM

It's confirmed that a part of the source is leaked. I just hope the right part leaked :gfdrin:

Like an NTFS part, for better NTFS support in Linux :happy: (though that, ofcourse, would be illegal :wink: )

From: Slashdot

quote:
We have identified over one million lines of our IP in Microsoft's source code. While I cannot share most of them because they are a trade secret, here are three of the most glaring examples:

#include

for( ; ; )

if(!stop) {

Many of these lines have been copied verbatim several thousand times. We do not want to, but are forced to sue Microsoft for unlicensed use of our intellectual property.
We will institute a licensing program called gplSource which will allow Windows users to obtain the legal rights to use our IP. This cost will be significantly discounted to early adopters.
Already at least three Fortune 500 companies have seen the validity of our claims and have paid these fees on a per-CPU basis to continue using Windows. While we cannot divulge their names, they do exist. Really!

Another very nice one:

quote:
Gandalf: No! Don't ever use it!

Frodo: How do we know it's source to the One OS of the Dark Lord?

Gandalf tosses a CD-R into the burner, and burns Windows.Source.Code.w2k.nt4.wxp.tar onto it. When the CD is done, there are glowing fiery letters on it.

Frodo : I can't read the fiery letters.

Gandalf : There are few who can. The language is that of Redmond, which I will not utter here. In the common tongue, it says "One OS To Rule Them All, One OS To Find Them, One OS To Bring Them All And With The NDA Bind Them"

Frodo: Take the source code Gandalf!

Gandalf : Noo! Do not tempt me with it! I dare not take it! Not even to keep it safe! You must understand Frodo, that I would be tempted to use this source code, for good. To disclose hidden API's, help the WINE project. But through me, all of open source would be tainted, and the LawyerWraiths of The Dark Lord will sure destroy us.

Frodo : But it cannot stay here!

Gandalf : No, no it can't.

Frodo : What must I do?

Gandalf : It must be sent to the fires of /dev/null, where it will be undone, and we will be kept safe from the Lawyers of Evil.

So remember folks, don't download it, or look at it, or attempt to build it! It is evil, and answers only to the hand of The Dark One.

RE: Windows 2000 & Windows NT 4 Source Code Leaks by GiantSpider on 02-13-2004 at 09:07 PM

[wishful thinking]Maybe sum1 decent got the source code and will correct the absolute tit of a job that MS did.[/wishful thinking]

RE: Windows 2000 & Windows NT 4 Source Code Leaks by user2319 on 02-13-2004 at 09:11 PM

probably not :sad:

it isn't full source code anyway.. MS would get scared if the kernel leaked :grin:

it's only 660MB out of 40GB :-/

RE: Windows 2000 & Windows NT 4 Source Code Leaks by GiantSpider on 02-13-2004 at 09:12 PM

then maybe just what theyve got

RE: Windows 2000 & Windows NT 4 Source Code Leaks by user2319 on 02-13-2004 at 09:18 PM

nah, it would be illegal, and it might cause incompatability.. It's very hard for MS to remove the design flaws which cause insecurity, because alot of programs wouldn't work on a new base.. Some one else probably won't be able to aswell..

btw, it's only 'parts of', and they are old versions..

RE: Windows 2000 & Windows NT 4 Source Code Leaks by lylesback2 on 02-13-2004 at 09:27 PM

i hope they find the person who did this... alot of unfaithful employee's at Microsoft these days... they gotta hire less nerds and more security guards

RE: Windows 2000 & Windows NT 4 Source Code Leaks by surfichris on 02-13-2004 at 09:29 PM

It was confirmed by Microsoft that about 660mb of 40gb of the Windows NT4 and Windows 2000 source code was leaked:

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2004/Feb...2windowssource.asp

It is still unkown, however, who leaked it and how it left the MS servers.

RE: Windows 2000 & Windows NT 4 Source Code Leaks by user2319 on 02-13-2004 at 10:26 PM

There are a lot of "source-sharing" projects, so governments and stuff can see the source.. So it doesn't have to be an MS employee :-/

I'm sure Microsoft has security procedures for that sharing... they don't just send an e-mail to your Hotmail account... "OK, our valuable Windows source code is attached :)" :lol:

This thread is getting spammy, so I'm going to close it. If you want to continue with one of the topics discussed here, just make a new thread in the right forum.
