How about adding an "Open conversation window" option in the right-click menu of an event log entry?
It would be useful if your contact list is long, messy and you want to talk to a person who just comes online or just changes his/her nickname...etc 
Of course this option is disabled when the entry describes "current user event"
Anyone?
