MSN Messenger without Internet Explorer by teraiten on 03-07-2004 at 11:56 PM

I'm trying to install MSN Messenger on my Internet Explorer-free Windows '98 SE system.

It refuses, because it says it needs Internet Explorer to work. Now I have an Internet Explorer-free system and like to keep it that way. It's a lot faster and doesn't have all the security holes ;)

I installed Internet Explorer, installed MSN Messenger and MSGPLUS, and now I removed Internet Explorer again.

MSN Messenger now still happily sits on my computer and can start it up. But when I try to log in it gives me this error message:

"Sorry, we could not sign you in because the sign-in name you entered does not exist or your password is incorrect 0x81000303"

Now this is pure nonsense as I have two msn messenger accounts that both work on my other computer (which has Internet Explorer). I can even log in with msn messenger clones (which I am not allowed to name here because of the forum agreement).

Now are there people here who are aware of a tweak or registry hack to make msn messenger work when Internet Explorer is not installed? It's technically possible as there are msn clients for linux that work. And they don't need Internet Explorer.

Do you people here know what to do?

I think Internet Explreo is required for the msnmsgr.exe to work right i think it calles some shit from it or somethign liek that liek exicute links and the intergrated chat logging. IE 5.5 is required to install msn 6.0 so it has got to use IE in some ways other wise i dont think they woudl require IE 5.5 to install other 3rd party clients just conect to the protocal and load ur contacts and stuff and usaly just exicute links in ur default browser .

But surely there must be a tweak or patch for this?

I don't want to use msn clone software because it lacks all sorts of cool and useful features, including the ones msgplus provides me with.

I can't find it on google, because there are hundreds of spoof sites which contain the keywords "msn" "messenger" "patch" "tweak" "without internet explorer" and more and all I get is information about getting viagra cheap.

Make sure you do have Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.

If you dont, you can get it here, Internet Explorer 6.

Edit

Internet Explorer from Microsoft is free. When MS comes across security holes they release a patch. Just install 11mbs and get it over with.

Erm, did you read my message at all? I want to get it to work without Internet Explorer. It is technically possible.

Yes I did, and it isn't possible, I will look around, but it isn't. Microsoft wants you to use their software, so just conform and get it over with ;)

Which browser do you use if you dont use Internet Explorer?

The rules say I'm not allowed to advertise software on this forum :S ah well, if you insist :p

I use the Opera browser. I just prefer it to Internet Explorer because it's got functions IE hasn't. Most notably it's faster :) and when it crashes I can just start it back up and it'll show me the pages I was visiting before I crashed. I love that (considering I sometimes have 20 pages open at the same time ;) )
