Tabbed MSN

[Info]
This plugin allows you to have you instant message windows tabbed like in mozilla firefox
Double clicking tabs will close them

[Install]
run install.exe

[How to use]
Open an instant message window and the tabs will apear

[Howto]
you can customize the images displayed on the tabs you can find them in your messenger plus! plugin directory usually located at C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 2\Plugins
and replace the blink1.bmp, blink2.bmp and normal.bmp with your own images
images are 16*16

Sound when contact opens window to you?
when a contact opens a window to you a sound will be played called newwindow.wav you can find it in your messenger plus! plugin directory usually located at C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 2\Plugins
if you want no song to be played just remove the newwindow.wav or rename it
you can also replace this with your own sound

[Commands]
/xentbmsn = enable the tabs
/xdistbmsn = disable the tabs
/xendistbmsn = enabble/disable the tabs if they are enable the get disabled and if disabled the get enabled
/xdonate = donate money to me
/xabouttabbedmsn = Show the about dialog

I got it, tried to open and got this:

What are you using to open it? Is the thing your using the laest version? try getting it from somewhere else (my site )

Any screenshots to decide wether or not to install? Also , anyone have a zip? I use the default windows compretion so i dont have any winrar software?

one small thing is, since the tabs are at the bottom of the convo window if u maximize the window u can't see the tabs. Otherwise pretty good .... side note isn't there another plugin that does tabbed windows .... i saw a screenshot once where the tabs were just about the contacts screen name??

After installing you have to turn it on, once you've run the command to turn it on the tabs will be at the bottom of the window (close all open windows and re-open them).



The flash when you recieve a new message etc.

I've used it on Windows XP Pro with MSN Messenger 6.1.0211 and Plus 2.54.74, works fine

i don't like the look of it i'll stick to cameno beta 2

Getting a error. It says it's not a valid windows file

Try registering the dll again, go to Start > Run

type in "cmd" and push enter.

Then type in

regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 2\Plugins\tabbedmsn.dll"

and then try again

Mine says that the .dll file is not executable and no registration helper is registered for this type of file.

Sorry to be blunt but this error was caused by you, not windows .

Notice that it claimed C:\Program couldnt be found, this is because you used a space in the path, use ms dos 8.3 naming or put the full path in quotes.

I reinstalled Windows messenger and it did not help, I'm still getting the 'MSCOMCTL.OCX' error.

Anyhow, Cameno works now

I always get this error when installing and when i open msn i get the error "The application or DLL C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 2\Plugins\tabbedmsn.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."

Make sure the .exe and .dll are in the plus plugins folder, and that you registered the .dll AND you have run the .reg file, then restart MSN and enable it and reopen ocnvo windows

its 50% done and this version look way better
and a lot of bugs have been fixed

This is great apart from in the install i got some weird messages even though it worked fine. About DLL's not and then been registered, i think it was my PC playing up though. Anyway nice work

It works almost fine for me. The little tabs appear, but when I click on them it doesn't change. It just makes the ping noise that means "you can't click this."

If you want to know, I'm running MsgPlus! 2.54.74 on Messenger 6.1.0211, on windows 98.

Ye, Wouter, that looks pretty cool, tried cameno a few weeks ago and was buggy so i left it. Im still trying to get tabs to work, i installed the patch on this computer and sorted out what tabs i wanted on another computer on the msnfanatic.com website as my computer wont let me access it for one reason or another, if anyone knows why... im open to suggestions.

Also, i was browsing this foreign website a few weeks ago and found an msn ip checker or sumthin, they wanted peeps to pay for it though... just woundering if this was a hoax or is there something as such that exists? there are other ways like send em stuff opend 'cmd' type in 'netstat -n' which is a pain in the arse and sometimes gives the persons /dns so then you have to arse around goin on ip whois lookup which takes time....

When would the new version be out wouter please?

the upcoming one's a great plugin but has some bugs which i found wouter's hoping to fix them though, because it 'repaints' the window , and it has a problem, because it 'jumps' when you press anutha tab,

i tried the first version it gave some sort of MS-DOS error although the registration went fine... anyway, I downloaded the vbruntime files...
as for the new version, it didn't work, but maybe because i don't have windows messenger... anyway, i am downloading windows messenger now and hope it'll work

just a quick remark: once i close msn, the "tabbed msn.exe" doesn't close... was wondering if that's an error or maybe it's just me

oh and if it's possible... can you make the popup toast optional because it's kinda buggy showing everytime msn messenger is launched

well I downloaded windows messenger and the plugin worked fine!

BUT!!! It uses system resources soo heavily, and keeps on flashing even though my contacts aren't sending me messages... and urmm, it keeps windows messenger running in the background =(

can't anything be done about that ?

Exactly the reason why you shouldn't uninstall or disable Windows Messenger on XP... There is a reason why MS doesn't want you to uninstall it...

I really like this Plug-in but it dosent work for me. I couldnt install first so i had to close MSN, and it installed sucessfuly.
But when i try to run MSN Messenger.......i get a pop up sain tabbed MSN is enabled and the whole MSN freezes...and i cant use it till i close Tab.

Any Idea?

Run the Installation Wizard again, but this time Click Uninstall instead of Install

tabbed msn closes when msn is closed

no more error message when closing tabbed msn thru /xdistbmsn

window flashing - fixed [still buggy]

work's fine with me!!!

only a little disappointing that when i close the "main" window i've still have a lot of click for lazy people like me, simple and fast

but love it anyway!!

one more point, you should really work on the fact it ain't shown the tab's in full-screen, especialy now that i use that handwriting plugin, because i write alot with the mouse, i need a little space

It does nothing here... Just slowing down when opening a new IM window...

Just to let you know it works fine for me. But do you have to put the thing on the top. Before when it was on the bottom atleast you didnt have to maximize it all the time. And the window frame didn't show a problem either. Maybe it would be better if the thing was back to the bottom

New version works great for me, except that sometimes when opening a new convo window, i lose the menue bar under the title bar

the tabs arent like normal tabbed windows. the tabs are more like separate windows pasted onto one main window, so it takes a lot of clicking to get the taskbar to stop flashing at me.  its not a biggie, but well, we strive for perfection

i know the tabbed msn isn't updated yet for 6.2 but i works on it.
but know i found a bug don't know if it's also there on msn6.1.
just look at the attachment and you will see what i ment.

also fixed the change the name on the tab when contacts names has been changed and put the menu under the tabs

the donate part is very annoying the first time it starts . Secondly, when I enable the plugin through Plus! -->Plugins --> TabbedMSN --> Enable and press send nothing happens and then I get a message that it has to be closed. I don't receive an error.

Oneindig veel tabs zijn toe te voegen.

Look at MSNFanatic.com, there u can download a similar file called Tabmgr. You can ad as many tabs you like. There is even a page with pre-configured tabs.

• Tabmgr is for msn contact window tabs not conversations.
  
  
• Tabbedmsn plugin organises your message windows.
  (the ones where you talk in) so that they are in one box with an easy to use switch between window system.
  
  
• A similar program is cameno this is also in beta testing stage its overall appearance is prettier than tabbed msn but it is loaded with errors and bugs and is not stable.
  
• Tabbedmsn is almost completely reliable when compared to cameno 0.2
  
• Tabbedmsn however is getting better and better each update (usually every once a week usually to obliterate some bug that we have found)

This may be just because i formatted my computer a month ago (thus deleteing runtimes and necessary files) but for me

• The tabs do not flash when i get a new message
• When i get a new message window it automatically switches to it (very annoying when i am typing in one box and press enter to send it to the wrong person!)

i likes the updates... have you managed to work out how to make the tabstrip dissapear with the windows when MSN is locked or boss protected? cos then that would make it perfect for me thanks for all your hard work... and if i wasnt a student in debt i would definately consider donating (along with donating to dozens of other ppl who work on these lil apps)

I had the same problem some time ago,

I installed the latest version and it was gone. Maybe try to remove and add it a few times

I just noticed another thing:

I first had 7 conversations open and 2 group-convo's

But when they said something in one group-convo the top of another (single-)convo began to flash ><

Don't know if it depends on the group-normal-convo-thing, but it's wrong anyhow

Just found out that when everyone but 1, had left both group convo's those convo's were switched

Why does the installer have that music very good program but I need to uninstall and whehn it said 'uninstall sucesvol' i wondered whether it worked or not?

I installed the runtime files, but it stil says that runtime error: Run-time error '429': ActiveX component can't create object

Someone know what to do about it. I searched the microsoft site but couldn't find anything.

it aint workin here. No errors but no tabs! I enabled them. Open a IM no tabs, open a other IM and it just opens a new window. No tabs at all

I had a couple problems with your MSN plugin.

1. It wants Windows MEssanger 4.7 most people with MSN 6.2 installed doesn't have windows messanger already installed. I am using the latest version of MSN plus and MSN 6.2

2.  comctl32.ocx is missing from your installer I had to go to www.dll-files.com I'm here at school on Windows 2000 pro with Service pack for and IE 6.01.

3.  Excelent work I've been looking for something like this if I had cash in my paypal account I'd send a couple bucks off to ya

Tabbed msn needs the  windows messanger api?

Hmm... I seem to be having more problems.
The tab work fine, but they don't flash or make a noise when i get a message... So i don't know when i have one

yeah i think wouter should edit his first message to say that because we are all having these errors very few are perfect

Hey, I just downloaded this plugin, but there is a problem;

Ik have MSN 6.2 and the lastest version of MSN PLUS!


I download the packet, extracted it with Winzip to my desktop and runned the setup, klikked 'install' and I got the msg that TabbedMsn was successful installed. Now when I open Msn I get this msg:

Component 'comctl32.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file missing or invalid


What is this? Do I have to copy some files from the zip packet to a folder or something?

Make sure you have the file comctl32.ocx in your Windows\System32 directory. If you don't have it, download the attached file and unzip it, and place it in that directory.

like close all tabs window docking better installer no winzip needed
and a few focus things changes the tab icons (by fukafly)

Hi.  I'm having a problem installing the plugin. 

I've extracted the files from the ZIP file (I've tried both WinRAR and WinZip), and I've put them in a folder.  I ran Installer.exe, but when I click Install, I get the following error message:

"Something went wrong while copying the files, please shut down msn and retry"

I've shut down MSN by closing it, and I've checked the task list to make sure it's not running, but I still get the error.  I've also tried sticking the Zipped files in Messenger Plus! 2\Plugins directory. 

Has anyone else had this problem, or does anyone know how to get around/fix this?

I've installed the new version, and I have one more problem than before:

1) Problems that I already had with the previous version:
           -   The flashing one still doesn't works
           -   When TabMSN is enabled, when I have a convo in my    taskbar, it prevent my taskbar from auto-hiding

2) New problem:
         I can't have a convo open in another way than in full screen. When I open one with somebody, it try to open in a reduced windows, as usual, but it immediately disapears in the task-bar. So, to have the convo on the screen, I have to right-click it in the taskbar and put it in full screen. That's a bit ennoying...

So, I hope you can fix all these bugs, because its a usefull plugin !

Wouter has been looking into that , I talked with him yesterday. The only way too really tell if Messenger Plus! has gone into Boss Protection is to read the registry setting...

OK. first of all, set both windows messenger and msn messenger to not start with windows:

Windows messenger: tools ---> option---> preferences -  deselect the top option

MSN Messenger: tools ---> options ---> general -  deselect the top option

Then restart your computer.  Once windows has loaded and you haved logged on (if neccesary) then try to install it again.

You should not recieve this error if done correctly, unless your user does not have write permission to the MSG plus folder, which may happen if your user is a limited account.....

If you are an admin on xp then it shouldnt be a problem

No, that key isn't for that... that key holds the status that the Boss Protection uses when it is activated...
value 0 = Status "Online"
value 1 = Status "Busy"
value 2 = Status "Be right back"
value 3 = Status "Away"
etc...

There is no key in the registry that is set when you go into Boss Protection, (or Messenger Lock for that matter)...

Tabbed MSN doesnt support Multi Messenger either for me. But it works with the accout i use. , unlike Cameno.

You are a bit vague tacofusion. Was there any error messages? Or does your computer chunr happily as if opening Messenger, but then decide it doesnt want to and go idle again?

download the latest official windows messenger here. don't download any betas or alpha's stick with the better supposedly bug free versions

oh.... is that y in my processes it loads up windows messenger even tho i only want it to use msn messenger... i always have to end that process.. i dont want it to open in the background

well i use zonealarm to refuse it permission to the internet it just runs so the other programs can leach off of its resources

well im not dead yet
but im verry busy @ school atm so thats why i didnt post much but this week there will be an update of tabbed msn
it will also have a function to have windows messenger disabled so it wont run anymore
other things improved are fully compactible with all windows skins (for example if you use stylexp like me)
an update function and close all tabs and a few more things

looking forward to it sounds like its almost complete. also this sounds like version 2.2beta

Hi, first thanks for this excellent plugin, it's already an indispensable part of my system

This may have already been reported but here goes, just in case:

My only problem with Tabbed MSN right now is the problem of keyboard focus.  Specifically, when I switch to my open conversations window, the currently active tab has the keyboard focus.  I really want the keyboard focus to be automatically placed in the message typing box.  In other words, whenever I have an incoming message, I have to first click on the conversations window in my taskbar, then I have to click in the correct box to type a message. This is a bit annoying, since without tabbed MSN, the focus goes where you'd want it to automatically.

That is it!  Fix that and I'm done!!

Ok, so you need to d/l Windows Messenger (in order to have its API) which Tabbed MSN borrows.

What should I do?  Usually I'd experiment and try to get it to work, however I don't want to potentialy screw-up my work computer.  If anyone has got it to run on 2000, then can you give me some info?  Tabbed MSN sounds great - let's hope I can use it

Nevermind my last post people!  As usual I took a closer look at what CookieRevised () wrote, and it should solve my problems!!

In his most recent post, CookieRevised linked to another post explaining "differences between Win Msgr 4.7 and 5.0".
This post has more info relating to Win2000.

For anyone interested, Win2000 users will need to use Windows Messenger 5.0.0482.

I haven't tried this as yet, but info on the Micro$oft site indicates this is the way to go.

When I have a free second I'll install and let you all know how it turns out.

Now everything works fine to me, but when I click on enable it shows a pop up, tab... enabled. But I cant see that because it just opens in different windows still... what to do?

did you try restarting msn after turning it on?

I installed Tabbed MSN but it wouldn't run. When I start messenger a window opens for the tabs but says it can't do anything because the "program is busy". I assume it means messenger. Then it crashes.

The next time I opened it the tab window didn't appear and when I opened some messages they weren't tabbed. Then MSN Tabs crashed on me again.

I'm using messenger 6.2 and Windows XP

I tried uninstalling and then I get a "file not found" message when I start messenger.

I tried installing again but no luck.

Ok... this is annoying.  I must have un/reinstalled over 30 times.  No matter hwat I do they don't work right.  I get NO error message what-so-ever.  I click enable tabs, it says they are enabled... but guess what? ><  They don't work

I am also using the Litestep shell.

Couple of bugs i've found

• Can't select the window in the litestep bar after its been minimised (I assume its just a litestep problem) i.e. can't restore a minimised window
  
• When resizing the window wierd things are possible
  
  
• As you can also see in the picture I don't get the cool interface that you do (probably also a litestep issue)

has everyone (gildan, wouter) abandoned these projects because no updates in ages and gildan said he would make cameno into a plus plugin when plus3 came out and gildan's certainly was nice looking just buggy as fuck

I'm on my windows 2003 box and it looks a whole lot better....
although the oversize dp problem still exists at least i can select the window and it shows up properly.

Have these projects really been abandoned? that would be a shame... they are really useful

however something new may have gotten introduced... this new one just got worse....

notice how the top menu is getting chopped off by the tabs.... and no amount of resizing will fix it.. arghhh oh well..... at least the msn man rocks

As for the program, awesome. I have never had a rogram that doesn't work for me Everything works perfectly. Needs more work though. Here are some suggestions:

* Middle clicking closes the tabs
* Right click displays a box with 3 options: undock/disable (puts all the message things in a new window), about (shows who and what the program is), close tab (does exactly as says)
* Better warning system for new messages
* Custom names in the tabs
* Better looking tabs

Zipped as requested...aww the file is now 2kb instead of 1kb

Really??? they should alternate between the green and red man with a speech box..... it works fine for me......

Wouter has stopped producing the plugin and made it a private one, and according to TabbedMSNSupporter (a member on these forums), he was banned from irc so got angry. Write here if you want him to continue making it.

Your Tabbed MSN is great but when a user use color in is nick, i see weird thinks in the tab. Can you change your program so the name in the tab is the name that is in the contact list ?

Wouter says "u don't have msn 4 installed, do u want to continue" So I do, it opens msn, the plugin is there, it says "enabled" but it doesn't actually do it. And cameno just didn't do anything...

I have an idea. How about putting blink1, blink2, and normal into a folder called TabbedMSN for better organisation??

Also, how about the ability to change the orange bar at the top of the tabs to the color of your choice, to suit the window theme??

StuffPlug NG also contains a feature to tab your windows. However, there are multiple ways to do so. Take a look at CookieRevised's reply to A window for all plugin? for a list. Besides, Tabbed MSN existed before StuffPlug NG did

there is a bug, when shutting down the computer via anything but start >> shutdown, sometimes it doesn't close and gives a runtime error that make windows un-shutdownable until you click ok on the error,

and graphical problems in windows xp SP2, messenger 6.2.0137, msgPlus! 3.21.104 (see attachment)

I tried to install but it said that I needed Windows Messenger 4 or that it won't install correctly. I deleted the Windows Messenger a while back because I hate it. Can you make it so that we don't need it to install this plugin?

Try CTRL + ALT + DEL and see if msn is running in both Applications and processes, close all instances, restart comp, and try again before doing anything else.

Wouter - Some suggestions....(if these have been mentioned no i havent read the 29 pages)

1: Give us a option of instead of a double click-close, a right click close or close all....
2. Give us more options then BMP. Then conversion isnt needed. Animated GIFs?...
3. "User is typing..." tab icon
4. (some) Interagation with SPNG ("User Closes Windows" shows a dif icon)
5. Interagation with some popular Plus! and MSN features (Rename contact, view logs, ect)

a plugin that does exactly the same job (some would argue a better job) as SPNG's open/close window feature.

I'm almost certain that he would make it compatible with his version rather than theblasphemer's

Can you make this plugin available for Messenger 7 Beta and Messenger Plus! 3.40 beta?.

i dunno, i'd like to know whats happened to all the tabbed projects other than SP:NG

lou_habs, take a look at CookieRevised's reply to A window for all plugin? there are some tabbed-chat-plugins listed.

Does not seem to work with "Smiley Central" Icons, possibly due to formating of the OptionsList/Toolbar.

Its a shame taht all the tabbed projects (apart from SP:NG) died

yes, this is the only one I like. Cameno died out pretty quickly and even though it looked cool, it was very buggy.

Tabbed MSN is great but not so graphical. And only one bug I know of and thats when you shut down the computer wrongly, and it doesn't close so it shows a runtime error, which only happens once in a blue moon.

So please Wouter, if you read this, continue this project. You have enough suggestions and a bug to make a next version.

I think it would be great if someone made a tabbed msn that flashed its whole tab in orange when somone were to send a message.

I've downloaded tabbed conversation window programs before and i always manage to miss some conversation window elerts.

I've tried 3 times to install this thing and each time I get a message telling me that "Something went wrong with the copying of the files."  Then, when I open up a message window, for the first time, I get the following error message:

Runtime error 35613
ImageList must be initialized before it can be used.

After that, I can open up other message windows, but there's not tabs or anything.

And you closed MSN before trying to install??

I installed it but get a system error 'class does not exist' on the tabbed msn plugin.

Screenshot of the error attached. I use

MSN messenger 7.0.0425 (beta)
MSN plust 3.40.112 (beta)
WinXP pro with SP2

Is there a fix available?

I think this program was designed for MSN 6.2, not MSN 7, sorry

if the creator is a member of the forums or somone who can make one is on the forums could you plz make one i find it very hard to talk on msn without tabbed msn

I still wish patchou would make a tabbed feature conversation for plus, it would make some more people download plus i think

well all i know is that TB mentioned patchou would do the feature if he wouldn't.

TB however has only said the tabbed feature wouldn't be IN THIS VERSION of SP:NG  so that could mean IT COULD BE BACK

so no official tabbed feature from patchou
(still his new feature should be good)

Tabbed conversations in plus would be amazing.It would save having all these plugins, but then again if it did happen Wouters plugin would become useless and so would cameno

Not necassarily people may prefer a differnt interface than plus's one (that problem could be eliminated by skins) or plus's one may be a memory hog or something i dunno


well cameno is pretty dead anyway (no body has heard anything from the author in almost a year)

and wouters project is pretty darn dead too
