Can't get rid of windows messnger? by Epitaph on 03-22-2004 at 10:42 PM

Hi can anyone help me.

Im running msn messenger 6.1 and whenever I boot up windows xp pro windows messenger starts up in the background and logs in. Theirs no sign of it except for the fact that i get the message that i was signed in at another location and its in the task manager. Ive done everything from dissabling it on startup to blocking it in the policy editor. I even tried going into msconfig and manually get rid of it although theirs no sign of it in msconfigs startup. Can anyone help me here. Im running plus also if that makes any differnce but i don't think it would.

OK well here's another problem that would cause a problem i have service pack 1 installed yet windows messenger does not apear in the add remove options and ive tried a few other options and they just won't work. Its almost as if windows doesn't know windows messenger is on my machine. The traces of it are so minimal. Like I said the only way i know its running is through the 8mb or ram its sucking up when i look at it in my task manager or also when i first log in i get the message you have been signed in at another location. It gets irritating when im running msn messenger 6.1 and don't want windows messenger bothering me. So yes I did look on google and found no help I was wondering if someone had ran into similar problems.

Here is the fun hack that allows it to be visible in Add/Remove Windows Components.

Click Start > Run > type C:\Windows\inf\sysoc.inf

What you will probably see is the following.

code:
[Version]
Signature = "$Windows NT$"
DriverVer=07/01/2001,5.1.2600.1106

[Components]
NtComponents=ntoc.dll,NtOcSetupProc,,4
WBEM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wbemoc.inf,hide,7
Display=desk.cpl,DisplayOcSetupProc,,7
Fax=fxsocm.dll,FaxOcmSetupProc,fxsocm.inf,,7
NetOC=netoc.dll,NetOcSetupProc,netoc.inf,,7
iis=iis.dll,OcEntry,iis.inf,,7
com=comsetup.dll,OcEntry,comnt5.inf,hide,7
dtc=msdtcstp.dll,OcEntry,dtcnt5.inf,hide,7
IndexSrv_System = setupqry.dll,IndexSrv,setupqry.inf,,7
TerminalServer=TsOc.dll, HydraOc, TsOc.inf,hide,2
msmq=msmqocm.dll,MsmqOcm,msmqocm.inf,,6
ims=imsinsnt.dll,OcEntry,ims.inf,,7
fp_extensions=fp40ext.dll,FrontPage4Extensions,fp40ext.inf,,7
AutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,au.inf,hide,7
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7
WMAccess=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wmaccess.inf,,7
RootAutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,rootau.inf,,7
IEAccess=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,ieaccess.inf,,7
OEAccess=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,oeaccess.inf,,7
WMPOCM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wmpocm.inf,,7

Games=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,games.inf,,7
AccessUtil=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,accessor.inf,,7
CommApps=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,communic.inf,HIDE,7
MultiM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,multimed.inf,HIDE,7
AccessOpt=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,optional.inf,HIDE,7
Pinball=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,pinball.inf,HIDE,7
MSWordPad=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wordpad.inf,HIDE,7
ZoneGames=zoneoc.dll,ZoneSetupProc,igames.inf,,7

TabletPC=tabletoc.dll,TabletSetupProc,Tabletpc.inf,HIDE,7

[Global]
WindowTitle=%WindowTitle%
WindowTitle.StandAlone="*"

Look for msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

now remove the word hide so it looks like this
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7

then you will be able to uninstall it.
Now if you do this you will have to apply a Registry entry that will cause Outlook Express to load very slowly.
code:
[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express
Modify/Create the Value Name according to the Value Data listed below.
Data Type: REG_DWORD [Dword Value] // Value Name: Hide Messenger
Value Data: [2 = Messenger Will Not Load]
Exit Registry and Reboot

Also if you do this, it will cause Applications that NEED the Windows Messenger 4.7 Api to operate correctly.

Add/Remove Windows Components

Or you can use this as CookieRevised Posted while ago.

Removing Windows Messenger will break some functions in MSN Messenger and other addons and plugins...

[OK]
This is not recommended at all. CookieRevised pretty much stated why:

It is advised to use the way CookieRevised himself explained in the post he linked to.
RE: Can't get rid of windows messnger? by spokes on 07-30-2004 at 12:30 PM

ok, but i use my way everytime i need to uninstall, nothing has happened yet

RE: Can't get rid of windows messnger? by The Napster on 07-30-2004 at 02:09 PM

Just run this, be sure to check the uninstall Windows Messenger (note: If you uninstall windows messenger MSn Messenger wont work, if you want to stop it from starting up just select the Disable feature)

[OK]
By completly removing Windows Messenger causes the API to disappear, now certain plugins wont work, remote assistance wont work and other features that depend on the Windows Messenger API wont work.

I found simply by downloading that program ticking the boxes "Disable Windows Messenger Machine Wide" just solved the problem, and retained all the features of Windows Messenger in MSN Messenger...then I deleted the .exe when I was sure...(kept a link to it just in case). And the problem seemed to be gone...
NO, NO and NO........ if you do that then YOU CAN NOT USE THE API'S ANYMORE!!!

Please READ http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=26...d=258821#pid258821

EVERYTHING is explained in GREAT detail there!!!

Including MessengerDisable and all other methods...

Bare in mind that all the solutions you post may not work for other people!!!

Dunno, can you give a link to that program or give more info about it as I don't know the program.......
RE: Can't get rid of windows messnger? by Anubis on 07-30-2004 at 08:04 PM

I noticed an error in your guide re:Windows Messenger running in the background at start up in XP...when you tell people in the registry to remove MSMSGS you forget to say that msnmsgr should be removed as well from the areas of the registry you state...

RE: Can't get rid of windows messnger? by CookieRevised on 07-30-2004 at 08:14 PM

No, because msnmsgr is MSN Messenger and that is not what people want to remove/disable/uninstall or having problems with, nor does it interfait with the startup of Windows Messenger....

To disable MSN Messenger from startiung up at windows logon, all you have to do is disable that option in MSN Messenger.

RE: Can't get rid of windows messnger? by Anubis on 07-30-2004 at 08:17 PM

Actually when I disabled it, MSN Messenger still worked...I was confused but your method didn't work unless I disabled msnmsgr as well...I asked someone else to try it and the same thing happened...I suggest you look into it

RE: Can't get rid of windows messnger? by CookieRevised on 07-30-2004 at 08:36 PM

MSN Messenger doesn't start Windows Messenger...
It is however possible that a plugin from Messenger Plus! starts up Windows Messenger. There is nothing you can do about it (unless you truely uninstall/disable Windows Messenger, but then the plugin wont work also). And all that is out of scope of the post and has nothing todo with "disabling" Windows Messenger...

RE: Can't get rid of windows messnger? by Anubis on 07-31-2004 at 08:40 AM

Yes, I know all of that, but then why did your method not work until I also disabled msnmsgr? And why does MSN Messenger still start up after I disabled it?
