About Gmail

As part of Google's mission to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful, we're testing an email service called Gmail.

Gmail is a free, search-based webmail service that includes 1,000 megabytes (1 gigabyte) of storage. The backbone of Gmail is a powerful Google search engine that quickly recalls any message an account owner has ever sent or received. That means there's no need to file messages in order to find them again.

When Gmail displays an email, it automatically shows all the replies to that email as well, so users can view a message in the context of a conversation. There are no pop-ups or banner ads in Gmail, which places relevant text ads and links to related web pages adjacent to email messages.

[...]

How much does Gmail cost?

Gmail is a free service and includes 1,000 megabytes of storage with each account. However, Gmail is still in preview mode as we test it to work out the kinks. So for now, it's not generally available.

[...]

What about spam?

Google is committed to keeping unwanted messages out of your inbox. Gmail includes a sophisticated spam filter that we're continuing to improve. The Report Spam link in Gmail is a way for users to help with this effort. It removes spam from the inbox and sends valuable data to the Gmail team working on spam blocking.

Not likely... CNN theoretically spoke to a high manager at Google and they confirmed the news, and said it wasn't an April Fools joke, however they might be joking too (story at cnn.com).

And web alerts was not launched yesterday, it was launched at least a month ago

RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by bach_m on 04-01-2004 at 08:59 PM

and personalized search is a few days old.

google doesn't launch fake services for april fools pranks. they talk about pigeons (someone else find the link).

this seems real, but who really cares?

- @gmail.com
- @google.<your nationality here >

RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by M-Head on 04-02-2004 at 07:02 PM

I think they will have @gmail.com because google.<nationality> is for major exclusive people!

RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by Pr0xY on 04-02-2004 at 07:42 PM

google having email, that tops the ball,

how........ exciting

RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by Guido on 04-02-2004 at 08:38 PM

They probably won't release @google.com e-mails to avoid hoaxes and people pretending to be Google employees stealing money to ignorant businessmen :P

For now, they will only give @gmail.com addresses (which will be the TOP thing when it's released :P)

RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by KeyStorm on 04-02-2004 at 10:29 PM

Well, Google is going to offer public stock (or whatever it is in English). So it's very interesting for them to offer new services, and the best way is to get personalized ads related to the content of the page you're viewing (AdSense, which has a very high quality). Attracting new customers and users (well, you kinda pay for viewing ads on the page) will make the company more influencing and more money will be spent in stocks... so... more $_$

this is insane...
now theres 1GB storage which is great:happy:! then hotmail gives 1TB, which is....better than great lol:grin:!!!!
and soon they say that there will be 10TB of storage then 50PB storage....man i don't think we need this much space:P

:wall::S

even if the article is fake this may still be true in the future....:P

RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by fluffy_lobster on 04-03-2004 at 09:44 AM

Why do I not believe the hotmail thing? 8-)

Anyway... better than any free storage is pop3 where u get as much as you can cram onto your [40gb for me] hard drive... it's taken years just for mine to reach a gigabyte...

RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by Anubis on 04-03-2004 at 10:24 AM

Will you be able to access GMail through Outlook\Outlook? Like Hotmail

RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by kao on 04-03-2004 at 10:27 AM

no, it says its not POP3

RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by Stigmata on 04-03-2004 at 11:00 AM

guido i mean, say hotmail pops up a message in messenger.......

* Stigmata thinks for Messenger plus 4 feature maybe?

RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by Kryptonate on 04-03-2004 at 11:34 AM

Gmail might support POP3 in the future which means you'll be able to access it trough Outlook or any other mail client. Therefor you'll be able to see that you've got new e-mails by using Messenger Plus!, it's an option in MP!2 already, so what are you talking about MP!4? :undecided:

RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by Stigmata on 04-03-2004 at 11:46 AM

it says no pop3....

so say a feature that logged onto the gmail server and checked inbox, sorted

thats why 4, becuase gmail wont be realised for a while now

That's not sure yet. I mean, when you have that amount of space... you don't need to d/l emails as long as you have a constant connection to the internet.
That's why it would make some sense to add a akind of notifier for gmail. But I'm sure they're going to integrate either in Google Desktop or Googlebar
RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by Wabz on 04-03-2004 at 12:22 PM

:blah:  Who'll use a GB for email the Webmail server at college doesnt even use that much space for 500 users tis shit0r

It's just a scam really to say you dont have to worry about your email space just delete the crap you dont need (which most people do do)

RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by Kryptonate on 04-04-2004 at 09:45 PM

Gmail might violate privacy according to privacy watchers. Google's cookie already keeps track of every search you ever conduct and an Orkut-cookie stores who you are. Gmail will be free but the e-mails that you'll send will contain adds that are similar to what you search most. If you delete an e-mail or terminate your account, Google might have a copie of your e-mails on their servers saved.

Google's cookie? That's completely false. Google's cookie just stores your settings (language, results per page, adult filter, etc.).

Huh? Where do you get your info? :P GMail will SHOW YOU ads besides your e-mails according to the content of the e-mail you are watching (check the screenshot I posted above). Sent e-mails are not known to contain ads.

What's the difference with Hotmail or Yahoo? How do you know they don't keep a copy?. Well, I'll tell you why... disk space :P  You can only trust privacy policies, and Google's is not more dangerous than any other webmail's policy...

Correction, Very few SUPER computers have 1 tb, NOT ONE! Home PC could have 1 TB :P That would be 1000 GB and that would mean you'd need AT LEAST 5 Hard-Drives :P

Unless they want to encourage internet piracy. You could send ripped DVD's across e-mail with no problems and have a nice little place to store it for other people to pick up...at the same time Google’s 1GB does the same

Newsservers, like the one i use to download my uhm... "stuff" has 65TB, some even more. Big companies have databases of sometimes more then a TB too. It doesn't take a super computer, just a big server.

And i know people who have 1TB or more on there home PC (they download a lot), just 4 drives of 250GB and you're there.
RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by Anubis on 04-05-2004 at 09:51 AM

AtomChips made an optical storage HDD that could store over 1TB by quite a bit! I'm a bit worried how Gmail plan to cope with the amount of people who are going to sign up and use a ton of space...

RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by KeyStorm on 04-05-2004 at 12:06 PM

btw, 1TB is actually 1024GB, not very relevant when you talk about MB or kB, but 24 GB makes a slight difference :refuck:

RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by fluffy_lobster on 04-05-2004 at 12:10 PM

My dad relies heavily on email for his work, he will exchange several documents a day and in about 5 years we still haven't reached 1GB :-/  I think the 1GB thing is pretty superficial... i reckon what they're really thinking is "the average account will reach X megabytes and we're prepared to give way over that".  1GB is just a way of saying they'll give you whatever you need... so they probably won't set aside 1gb for every account they have.

Yeah if they did that things would get out of hand. They'll probably be some legal thing that if you have over 200mb (for example) they'll regard your activity as suspicious (just to scare off n00bs)
RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by saralk on 04-05-2004 at 02:34 PM

web hosts do that a lot, they say

"you can have upto 500MB of space"

when they only have 10gb of space.

so instead of just hosting 20 people, they will only allocate something like 50MB of guarenteed space for the person, on the premise that not everyone will use their full space

The Domain Name ending for Google Mail is gmail.com, because if you go to the site and just enter Username as "Test" and Password as "Test", it returns:
Username and password do not match. (You provided test@gmail.com)

Spymac (a free e-mail provider that's pretty unknown) provides now (starting from yesterday) 1 GB mailstorage.

There's no way on hell they can provide 1GB of storage for millions of users. They probably won't allow attachments or something. :refuck: Or they'll lower the limit after they'll get a little bit of mass-abuse. :p

And I suspect they won't even allow sorting your mail... :dodgy:

RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by KeyStorm on 04-07-2004 at 11:29 AM

Well, they are storing whole webpages and a whole bunch of images, just for the browser.
I don't think it's a matter of space with 10PT it's far enough.

And think Google haven't lied yet; all impossible things they have promised they did at the end.
Look at AdSense.

Like most big computing companies they'll have a whole room with just servers installed on top of each other on racks :).

well, i read 2dae frm the newspapers tt Google was attacked by other rivals like M$...they said Google, which plans to scan email content electronically, might invade into the users' privacy n it can distribute incoming ads beside incoming messages...

eg. an email sent frm a friend 2 u abt lets say an upcoming holiday will include links to airline n hotels...

RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by Menthix on 04-08-2004 at 04:33 PM

Well, nobody ever cared about that very same way Google displays ads on their search page (well, most people). So i do not understand why it's such a big problem all of the sudden now :s.

Google needs to pay their bills too.

RE: G(oogle )Mail - Did I hear right? 1GB mail storage? by KeyStorm on 04-08-2004 at 04:45 PM

Well, the problem is that they put adsense on public (or thought to be public) contents (eg: websites and searchresults). Now they're gonna add it to private contents which somehow evidences that they can read you emails.
Well, IMO, they could read your mail anyway if they wished. AdSense is a totally automatic thing.
It's "almost" the same as if Hotmail would have AdSense: when you read your mails, you see automatically generated ads related to what's in them.

And what's with Carnivore, Echelon or that sort of systems which catch suspicious e-mails and store them for HUMAN revision?

I think Google's on his right to do that, they have to earn something from this, they're not going to offer this for *free*...

I really don't know what i would do with 1G of space in an e-mail.. it would sort of be totally wasted.. i'll stick to my 15mb gawab account thank you :P (www.gawab.com)
