Auto installers of smilies HELP by Qatanqo on 05-29-2004 at 12:44 PM

Some might find it very handy to have it auto install personally I hate it

I never like ALL the smilies in a pack but when it auto installs I dont know where I can find the smilies to store them to my HD IF that is at all possible

I just wanna be able to yank the ones i like and delete the others

I always make my own folder with all my smilies 900+ so far and I wanna be able to just put them int here and zip and send to friends

am I making any sense? I hope so *-)

Where the icons are stored, prior to adding them to messenger, I dunno; it depends on the package... In some packages, they are simple saved within a zipfile or in some within a resourcefile (use reshack to extract that). Then there are packages which make it realy hard to rip the icons out without installing them....

But after they are installed (added to messenger), every single icon is always stored as a PNG in your messenger settings-directory:

for XP, Win2k, NT this is:
\Documents and Settings\<windows accountname>\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\<that ID number thingie>\CustomEmoticons
for 9x (with profiles) this is:
\WINDOWS\Profiles\<windows accountname>\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\CustomEmoticons
for 9x (without profiles) this is:
\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\CustomEmoticons

The icons are named TFR<number>.tmp or TFR<number>.dat, but are in fact just normal PNG files. So you can copy all those files to another directory and rename all the files to "*.png".

Better be careful - the auto smilie installers are usually loaded with adware and/or spyware....that's why it's an EXE instead of, say, a ZIP file...

Ah ok didn't know that, thank you

I will run my anti-crap programs later today ;-)

is emoinstaller from mess.be also loaded with crap?

RE: Auto installers of smilies HELP by Qatanqo on 05-29-2004 at 05:08 PM

the 2 installers i had came from mess.be

and i installed one today and then i started getting a few pop ups from gain publishing

thats my only evidence

Well I don't know if the ones from mess.be are or aren't, but I don't use them - I make my own emoticons usually ;)

Anyways, I use Spybot Search & Destroy and sometimes Adaware...but I like Spybot bcz it blocks a lot of scripts that could cause problems ;)

AOL's spyware remover is quite good (yes u did here AOL and good in the same sentence! :o)

is disables the spyware instead of deleting it so if the program was needed to run some software (i.e. uninstall plus!) than all the files will still be there!
