msn totally messed up, multiple problems by wout on 07-01-2004 at 06:32 PM

It started when msn didn't logged in, it kept trying for 10 minutes before i cancelled. The second time i tried i got the usual 0x000132423423 like error. I rebooted my computer and started msn again. This time (after 2 minutes) it finally logged in, but half my contact list was gone and only one person was online (which is very unusual) + i got around 20 new spanish sounding contacts in my list of people i never heard of :S

i deinstalled msn (6.2) and msn plus (3.00) and i redownloaded both programs, making sure i got the newest version.

after installing logging in didnt work, after trying again finally it worked. but when i logged in later the spanish thing happened again, this time with noone online.

i deinstalled everything again, erased all msn leftovers in de hidden documents and settings map, i runned adaware 6, spybot search and destroy, spychecker, and zonealarm 5 virusscanner and i updated all these programs before using them.

it didn't work. i really don't know what happened. I did not install any programs the last few days and i did not change any settings in windows or internet explorer and i don't have any new hardware recently.

sometimes if people are online i can chat with them, and people who have me in their list can see me (tested with my sisters account and some people talked to me while they were not in my list anymore) Everytime i log in the amount of people i lose differs, and they randomly come back the next time i log in. The last time i tried everyone off my contacts were gone and i only got spanish like people in my list.

and the strange people in my list are always offline

a desperate msn (plus) user

Wout, i have heard bout the strange ppl beeing added in contactlist an contacts vanishing before in IRC...i don't know whats going on....that person claimed it was caused by msg plus! (wich i doubt) cuz it happend rite after she installed that (an yes she got it from msgplus.net).. Me too would like ta know what is going on (i keep saving my contactslist just in case).

Please uninstall plus completely (including settings), reboot then reinstall, also i advice to change ur password, delete an block all strangers from ur contactlist an import a previous saved contactlist.

Also could u please provide us with a list of plugins u installed, it mite help us find out what is causing all this. Ohh uhh another question: are u using or have u used MyCustomNiX?

RE: msn totally messed up, multiple problems by wout on 07-01-2004 at 07:05 PM

i have installed the following plug-ins:

the handwriting plug in for plus
rdm speech for msn plus

i installed both plug ins more then a month ago so i doubt they got anything to do with this.

the last time i succeeded to sign in my contact list seemed to be complete, but msn said my sister was offline, while she actually was online (on the computer in the room next to mine) and she could talk to me.

i seriously doubt if i got hacked, because people get back in my list and get deleted everytime i sign in and out, and it cant explain why people who are online are offline for me (or there must be one giant complot with people hacking me together and blocking me :P but this is almost impossible because most of them dont know eachother)

and importing a backup is useless because next time i sign in everyone is gone again, or they are back again... but luckilly i just updated my back up a week before all this happened :D

I think it is server side.

Other people that had it also pointed out that the problem vanished after some time.

Just wait or contact MSN so they can look after it with following url.

http://support.msn.com/contactus_emailsupport.asp...ENGER&ct=eformfree

If you get a reply or it vanishes let me know since I'm interested in what could be wrong here.

RE: msn totally messed up, multiple problems by wout on 07-02-2004 at 10:43 AM

I've contacted msn with your link, i will let you people know when (and if) they answer.

And i've never heard of the MyCustomNiX plug in, i do not use it and never have. Does it causes problems more often or something?

edit: the last few times i logged in everything seemed to be okay, atlhough i didn't change anything. I guess msn fixed it :)

it's a problem with the servers of MSN, this should be solved soon. It has got nothing to do with Plus!.

Hey i dnt know if i can post this or not srry if i break ne rules

but there is a temprorary solution to msn messenger not signing in either just forget about it till comes back on and relax fromt the hectic  schedules and timings to talk to ppl . lol

or download any other client for messenger stuff like jabber or there is this intergrity messenger on the net or trillian (no offence to the developers but i dnt really like any of these but have to use them till messenger comes back on...

yes u can sign in on to ur messenger serverice using these clients ...

so use it temprorarily for those like me who are having problems signing in....

but still msn messenger rocks :)

with msgplus for sure (H)

How would that be breaking any rules? I am having the same problem and have had it for weeks now. At any moment I'm gonna start getting withdrawal symptoms! If I actually can sign in, my first few messages don't get through and then random ones don't get through until I am finally signed out after about 2 minutes. I'm going to have to start.......... talking to people! :o

RE: msn totally messed up, multiple problems by wout on 07-06-2004 at 05:58 PM

everyting works fine now, but i promised to tell when msn support send a reply. The reply is in dutch but i will make a short summary of what was in the letter.

first they offcourse told me about all the standard procedures about checking your password again and have all the updates available, etc. etc.

then they tell about my problem and that they also discovered it. The problem is passed through to technical support and we advice to try again in 24 hours. But they are not sure at what exact date and time the problem will be fixed. Furthermore they apoligize and they are working on it.

I have to say im pretty happy about the way they handled, this i half expected an automated message about updating my software and checking my internet connection.

RE: msn totally messed up, multiple problems by MessEnGer on 07-07-2004 at 05:03 AM

Reply from msn i received when reported about the problem :

Thank you for writing to MSN Messenger.

We apologize for the delay in answering your email. We normally respond within 24 hours. However we have received an unusually large number of messages recently.

This is ****  and I will be assisting you regarding your issue signing-in to the service. I understand how inconvenient this can be and I apologize.

After carefully evaluating your issue, I found the following reasons to be causing this:

1. Your computer may have third-party firewall software, which prevents your computer from connecting to MSN Messenger servers. Please make sure that the firewall software is set to allow MSN Messenger to operate. For information, please consult the firewall software manufacturer. Or if you are unsure how to do this, I suggest that you check for firewall or filtering software that may be installed in your system. Here's how:

a. Look in the notification area or on the desktop for an icon that represents a firewall or filtering program. If necessary, hover the cursor over each icon in the notification area and read the tool tip to determine if it represents firewall or filtering software. Right-click the icon, and then click Disable. If Disable is not available, click Exit.
*Some of the most popular firewall programs are:
a. Norton Internet Security
b. McAfee Personal Firewall
c. Freedom Firewall
d. Black Ice Defender
e. Zone Alarm
b. Check for installed firewall or filtering software in Add and Remove Programs. To uninstall the firewall, follow the steps below:
1. Click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Click Change or Remove Programs.
4. Click the program you want to remove.
5. Click Change/Remove.
6. Click OK.

2. Your computer may not have the latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 6 SP1). The latest version of MSN Messenger makes use of the new security features incorporated in Microsoft Internet Explorer. For the best experience when using MSN Messenger, please install or update Internet Explorer to the latest version. Do this even if you are not using Internet Explorer as your default Internet browser.

a. To check if you have the latest Internet Explorer, please:
1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Click on “Help”.
3. Click “About Internet Explorer”.
4. Look at the version number located beneath the “Microsoft Internet Explorer” logo. The version should be 6.0.2800.1106.
b. If you do not have the latest Internet Explorer, you can download this for free by:
1. Go to http://microsoft.com/windows/ie/.
2. Click “Download now”.

3. Your Internet Explorer's security settings may be set too high, preventing your computer from connecting to MSN Messenger servers. To lower these settings, please:
a. Start Internet Explorer.
b. Click “Tools”.
c. Click “Internet Options”.
d. Click “Advanced” tab.
e. Go to “Security” section.
f. Make sure “Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)” is not checked. If it is, click on the box to uncheck it.
g. Make sure “Use SSL 2.0” and “Use SSL 3.0” are checked. If it is not, click on the boxes to check it.
h. Click “OK” to end.

4. Your computer’s proxy settings may be incorrect. Proxy settings allow your computer to communicate with the Internet. Please contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or your network administrator for the correct proxy server and port numbers.

a. If you have the proxy server and port numbers, please:
1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Click “Tools”.
3. Click “Internet Options”.
4. Click “Connections” tab.
5. Click “LAN Settings”.
6. Make sure “Automatically detect settings” is not checked. If it is, click on the box to uncheck it.
7. Make sure “Use a proxy server for your LAN …” is checked. If it is not, click on the box to check it.
8. Type the proxy server number on the box beside “Address:”.
9. Type the port number on the box beside “Port:”.
10. Click “OK”.
11. Click “OK” again to end.

b. If your Internet connection does not require you to connect via a proxy server, it is recommended that you clear out this setting in the “Connections” tab of MSN Messenger. To do so, please:
1. Start MSN Messenger.
2. Go to “Tools”.
3. Click “Options”.
4. Go to “Connection” tab.
5. Make sure "I use a proxy server" is not checked. If it is, click on the box to uncheck
6. Click “OK”.
7. Click “OK” again to end.
