Those who don't like Linux can have a good look at this page: http://srom.zgp.org/. Just look at that green bar next to Linux... RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by bach_m on 07-09-2004 at 08:07 PM
lol. i agree! RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by Stigmata on 07-09-2004 at 08:32 PM

Get a Knoppix CD from www.knoppix.org. RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by CookieRevised on 07-09-2004 at 08:40 PM
1) Windows is more widespread then Linux. RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by bach_m on 07-09-2004 at 08:40 PM
quote: lo0oks like someone wants a copy of Linux try SuSe or Mandrake. RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by CookieRevised on 07-09-2004 at 08:46 PM
quote:SuSe? Mandrake? They suck like hell, use Debian... Here is the proof: http://zork.net/~nick/srom/ RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by Choli on 07-09-2004 at 08:46 PM
quote:dodgy statistics.... linux is good for some things where windows fails and the opposite. Both rock and suck ... (for example, I can't do my work in windows, because the company makes the perl scripts in linux, and I can't use linux @ home because it doesn't know any driver for my network card and i don't hve internet ) quote:all the OSes are (must be) bootable quote:it's an old computer, right? so.. win95, win 3.11, msdos 6.22, imbdos 5, msdos 3.0, etc... quote:linux... there are linux for all the likes mulinux, for example, is a very small one edit quote:agree RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by KeyStorm on 07-09-2004 at 08:47 PM You can test Knoppix. It's a Linux distribution that runs from a CD at startup, loads itself to the RAM and doesn't touch your HHDs RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by .blade// on 07-09-2004 at 09:42 PM
quote: I've seen that page before but WHO rated the OS? I mean look...Solaris got a better review than Windows....and Solaris shouldn't even be listed as in OS it sucks so badly....it's like Windows with more command prompts According to the page it was done by searching AltaVista and with the OS name plus "rocks" or "sucks" next to it...I mean just because a person wouldn't put a web page up hailing or booing an OS doesn't mean they do/don't like it.... RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by RaceProUK on 07-09-2004 at 09:52 PM You do realise that the page is little more than a bit of fun? Cookie got it right. Linux won't become the BEST OS until it can find a way to topple M$. When you consider the number of people that know that site, probably 75% are devotees of Linux which makes it very much biased in the first place. RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by Anubis on 07-10-2004 at 08:15 AM
quote:Yeah. That's one thing that pisses me off about n00bs at times...They hate Microsoft with really no reason. True they have cornered the OS market (and IE is the most used browser to my knowledge)...However Window's OS are very adaptable, it suits the needs of the Businessman, Home user and server runner...Although Linux have specialised operating systems for different needs (the main reason I like Linux) I'm going to stick with Windows as my primary OS for now at least. I don't really need a different OS, however I find it very useful to practise with as many Linux operating systems as possible every now and then... RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by Garndell on 07-10-2004 at 09:50 AM Add to the Windows as main OS arguement compatability with software and you got a winner. People in general want plug & play for software & hardware. They don't want to manually configure everything. RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by mad_onion on 07-10-2004 at 10:43 AM
wow this thread is a lot more pro microsoft than most on this forum. i agree with anubis when he says that noobs say windows is bad because it simply isnt true. people just arent appreciative of what they have im sure when we all think about what microsoft has done for the world it can never be said to be a bad thing. what if someone says RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by Choli on 07-10-2004 at 11:25 AM
quote:did you try it? It seems that you didn't A free software may or may not be a bad program. Plus is free, is it bad? Linux is free, is it bad? Well, you can't say yes nor not without trying it. Don't be suspicious of a free OS... for the same reason I could be suspicious of Windows because I don't know what it internally does (I don't have access to its code)... With this post I'm not saying that Linux is better than Windows nor the opposite. Just that people have to be objetive and be able to reason why this or that OS is free or not... RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by mad_onion on 07-10-2004 at 08:37 PM
well plus is very different from a whole OS RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by saralk on 07-10-2004 at 08:52 PM
Linux is open-source, this means that the person who developed it originally let everyone see the source code for it and modify for it for their own use. Many companies have done this and sell the software as a full operating system. RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by RaceProUK on 07-10-2004 at 08:55 PM
It is possible to make huge wads of cash from a free operating system in at least two ways: RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by Choli on 07-10-2004 at 09:56 PM
quote:the fact that you can legally get a free copy of a distro of linux doesn't mean that you (or someone else) can't sell copies of it. In fact, the companies of linux (SusE, RedHat, etc....) make money selling thier OS with technical support, big manuals, etc... They also earn money when they say conferences, etc... Sumarizing: Just what raceprouk said.... quote:yes, of course, however both are programs designed and developed by people. The fact that they're or aren't free or that you can or can't see its code has nothing to do with if they're good or not. RE: The OS wars: outcome decided! by user2319 on 07-14-2004 at 01:37 PM I agree with Choli and Raceprouk, but might add that you don't HAVE to make money out of it. You can also program for fun, and because you just did it for fun, why not share the fun with others and open-source it? And there is no company that makes linux. And linux companies make money out of support and nice manuals with the boxed versions. Big companies want support, so that if (for whatever reason) something goes wrong, they can just call someone.
