Trigger internal beep on message by CanadianOriginal on 07-11-2004 at 12:02 PM

I could have sworn I read something about this on here, but I can't find it despite ultiple searches ^o). Oh well, flame me if I missed it.

What I tihnk would be useful is a plugin that triggers a PC's internal speaker beep when a message is received. Some apps prevent MSNMsg's sounds to be heard, and a PC speaker beep is an inoffensive way of alerting you have a message. Of course, it can be dressed up, with an option to disable Messenger's usual sounds automatically, yadda yadda yadda. I'll leave that to the creativity of the ingenious programmer who'll take this on!

Shouldn't be too hard, I hope!...

I knew I wasn't going nuts (not just yet anyways). But is it possible to code it as a plus plugin? Just the speaker beep? Messenger Discovery has loads of other features I don't want, and it'll bog down my system for nothing :S

don't worry, it doesn't take as much as you think it does.

I don't agree. All the really useful features in it (to me anyhow) are in Plus, in some form or another. I really only want the beep, if I ran the whole program, I'd be wasting ressources because I'd never use anything else.

you can actually disable all the other features - oh and btw, if you make a plugin for this, it will take as much memory as messengerdiscovery.

Nevertheless, I fully agree with CanadianOriginal... Why using a program with tons of useless features* (even if you can disable them) and the possebility for bugs, incompatibilities and things that don't work (and in this case a proxy which you don't need), while all you need is 1 small thing...

* useless in the eyes of a particular user...

That's exactly the same reason why I don't use the so popular StuffPlug-NG. For me that plugin isn't usefull at all, just maybe one or two functions, but I'm not gonna install it just for that 1 feature.......
(and that also explains why I have something against software that calls itself "power", "the best", "ultimate", etc... It's all in the eye of the beholder, I decide what I find "usefull" or "power" or "ultimate".)

I find that hard to believe. But I don't think memory is the issue here anyways....

you do need a proxy or packet sniffer, unless you use some COM api's to get the text from the window. How would you do it then?

Oh really? So if you disable everything it will still do it? I think not.

The only thing that really takes resources is the SOCKS proxy.

I like plugins over standalone programs anyway
standalone programs just bug me, i only want one program running to use messenger

RE: Trigger internal beep on message by CanadianOriginal on 07-11-2004 at 05:44 PM

I wouldn't even mind a plugin with it's own exe (like Wouter's OpenConvo), I just want smooth integration into Plus, for this one feature.

you people must have hated the old 4. days... :|

How is it possible to call it msnDscovery when it's MessengerDiscovery!? I can see how people get MSN Plus! and Messenger Plus! mixed up but please don't tell me you can get MSNDiscovery and MessengerDiscovery mixed up. Shows how ignorant you really are. I would be glad to code a plugin that uses MY unique feature but I'm sure someone will steal it soon enough ;).

Then send it only to me and I'll guard it with my life :P
