MS VC++ Runtime Error by nackas on 07-31-2004 at 01:35 AM

I seem to be getting an error message when a contact opens a conversation with me, or I open a conversation with them.

quote:
---------------------------
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
---------------------------
Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

I have MSN Messenger 6.2.0137 and Messenger Plus 3.01.94.
I only have the handwriting plugin installed.

I'm using Windows XP SP1. Everything was working fine until I installed StuffPlug, but I removed that... and yet it still gives me the error. I also uninstalled MsgPlus, and that helped.

Hope you can help me, thank you :)

Thanks for the quick reply lopardo, but I don't use ZoneAlarm or IMSecure. I'm quite sure its something in the registry for then alert of when a conversation window is opened. I'll have a look in my reg to see what I can find, but any help would be greatful :)

Try this then. Did you install/uninstall any other program since this started happening?

Yup tried that, I can sign in perfectly... It only crashes when a conversation window opens.

Then I would try a clean reinstall... This involves editing your Windows Registry, which you should do carefully, removing an important key can cause your system not to start up anymore...

First, uninstall both MsgPlus and MSN Messenger (back up your MsgPlus settings first if you want, and delete them when the uninstaller asks you if you want to). Restart.
Go to Start > Run, type regedit and press enter. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSNMessenger, select it and  press the Del key to delete it. Do the same with HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSNMessenger.
If you have Windows 2000 or XP:
Go to Start > Run, type %appdata%\Microsoft and press enter.
If you have Windows 9x:
Go to Start > Run, type X:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft and press enter (X: is the drive name where you have Windows).
Once you're there, rename or delete the "MSN Messenger" folder.
Delete or rename MsgPlus folder too.

Install MSN Messenger and MsgPlus again. If it still doesn't work, then it could be some other program incompatibility, tell us what you have running.

Okay I ended up just doing the clean reinstall, messenger works perfectly normal now. Thanks a lot for the help lopardo! You should try the same thing marissa, it may help :)

PS on lopardo's post:: don't forget to close MSN Messenger completely first!

If you have Windows 9x with profiles enabled:

X:\WINDOWS\Profiles\<windows accountname>\Application Data\Microsoft

Addional tips (and "fine-tuning") on lopardo's post:

The thing that proberly solves it is not the registry editing, but the deletion of the MSN Messenger directory....

But be carefull in deleting it if you are not the only person using Messenger (or the computer): You don't have to delete the entire MSN Messenger directory, only the subdirectory for your "problem" account.

Under de directory "MSN Messenger" you'll see a bunch of numbers, these numbers represent different msn accounts. To find out the id of your own msn account, you can use this utility from Choli. Once you've found the id number, delete only that directory ;)

Cause and even further "fine-tuning" (to loose even less data):

If this fixed the error, then there was some screw up in your cache from MSN Messenger. Now, since your DP's, CE's and backgrounds are stored there it almost is certain that it has to relate to that....

* If you recently installed new emoticons with a emoinstaller, this could've been the source of the screw up....

* If you recently installed something that can change (or add) your DP's (like StuffPlug), and changed them, then this could've been the source of the screw up....

* Since there are not much (or non?) programs to deal with backgrounds, this isn't mostlikely the cause...

Now, with all this in mind, you can even further fine-tune the solution so that you will loose even less settings:

Only delete the directories (in your own MSN ID directory):
* "UserTile" to reset and clear all your display pictures (if you changed or added a DP lately)....
* "CustomEmoticons" to reset and clear all your custom emoticons (if you changed or added CE's lately)....

Don't delete both at once, but do it one by one and check if everything works in between (but don't forget to completely close msn messenger afterwards before you gonna delete the other directory!). Changes are greater in that way that you will only loose one or the other, but not everything!
