Install behind a Firewall by ruka_keops on 08-04-2004 at 10:48 AM

Can I install Messenger Plus on a computer that is behind a firewall?

I've tried to install MSN Messenger before but it didn't work because it couldn't connect do MSN Servers.
That's why I decided to ask before I try the installation.

Also, will Messenger Plus try to check which ports are opened to bypass the firewall? And will it work using port 80?

ICQ has this feature: it automatically discovers my network topology, then it tries to connect using several ports and servers, looking for a hole in the firewall.

My Regards

Messenger Plus! is an addon for MSN Messenger. This basically means it will not change the way MSN Messenger works. It will only add functionalities in a menu; it is not a separate program.

That means that if you can't use MSN Messenger now, Plus! won't change this.

For all the features of MSN to work there are multiple ports you need to open;
I can't be sure that my list is up to date...but I believe it is as follows;
TCP 6891 - 6900
TCP 1863
UDP 1863
UDP 5190
UDP 6901
TCP 6901
If I've missed any could anyone point it out...as for connecting to the MSN Server (64.4.13.58) via port 80 I don't know if it's possible, the default port, to my knowledge, is 1863...Plus! couldn't do this, it hooks in and doesn't alter the connection side of MSN Messenger...There's a program at http://www.hopster.com/ that can bypass ports that IM programs use (compatible with MSN Messenger) that should allow you to get through your firewall, however before using it open the ports I suggested...

Thank you for your replies.
I cannot change the firewall rules, therefore I can't open the ports you sugested.

But you have answered to my question: since Messenger Plus works the same way that Messenger does, it useless for me to install it.

I've checked the Hopster programs and it seems it could help in my problem.

My Regards

Uau!! Hopster worked. For the first time I was able to use MSN Messenger from this computer (in my office LOL).
Thank you very much.
