HELP ME! plz? by _Art_ on 08-12-2004 at 10:35 AM

Well since MSN didnt reply to my email i sent a month ago, I asked people to help me, they said they didnt know and gave me the Messenger Plus! Forums link.

This is not a Messenger Plus! fault/error or w/e (i think)
Anyway i can't sign into MSN 6.2.
When i try, i says its signing me in.. then it just stops, it doesnt give out any errors.
I can sign into Windows Messenger and i can also sign into MSN 6.2 on my other computer. And i can sign into other accounts on MSN6.2 on this computer.

I tried uninstalling MSN 6.2 and reinstalling it but i still got the same problem.

Anyways, i think it has to do with my reg and i dont know what.

Can anyone help?*-)

I think Windows Messenger may be singin in silently at the background which prevents MSN Messenger from singin in correctly. To be honest this i just wild guess, but problems simular to this do seem to happen.

At least it wouldn't hurt to disable Windows Messenger the right way if you only use [i]MSN Messenger. CookieRevised created an excellent guide on how to do this. Follow his instuctions precisely (step 1 through 9.

You can find Cookie's guide here: http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=26...d=258821#pid258821
The actual guide itself starts where it says "Correct way:".

No, the bug you are referring to doesn't do anything like that...it simply causes hassle so it signs into a silent Windows Messenger stopping you from signing into MSN Messenger but later you can sign in...This problem sounds unrelated. This is not the bug _Art_ is experiencing...

Have you tried uninstalling Windows Messenger, MSN Messenger and Plus! in that order...and then install only Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger, but not Plus! Then reboot your computer and see if MSN Messenger 6.2 is working, if it is install Messenger Plus! again...Also make sure you're using Windows Messenger 5.0 when you reinstall Windows Messenger (I have a feeling that this may change a few registry settings a long shot I know but it may)
Windows Messenger 5.0
MSN Messenger 6.2

RE: HELP ME! plz? by Kryptonate on 08-12-2004 at 12:27 PM

do you have something installed for MSN Messenger or Plus!? such as plugins or patches or add-ons for MSN Messenger?

RE: HELP ME! plz? by Fraisie on 08-12-2004 at 12:30 PM

Are you running a firewall of any kind ?

RE: HELP ME! plz? by _Art_ on 08-12-2004 at 12:33 PM

No, i don't have a firewall

yes i have/had alot of plugins... i installed MessengerDiscovery2 a couple of days before MSN 6.2 stopped working... i don't know if that helps...

Uninstall Messenger Discovery, and then see if it works...
Also I must warn you, using the internet without a firewall is risky. Windows XP SP2 has one included, please upgrade. Also if you upgrade to SP2 it may also solve your problem if it isn't Messenger Discovery, although that's unlikely...

sorry to bother you guys like this..

RE: HELP ME! plz? by Menthix on 08-12-2004 at 02:15 PM

Isn't Messenger Discover acting as a local proxy? This means that Messenger Discovery (or you manually) probally configured MSN so it connects to a proxy. To fix that, follow these steps:

  • Start up MSN 6.2.
  • Click "tools" -> "options" -> "connections".
  • If there is something filled in there and you don't need a proxy server to access the internet, then uncheck "i use a proxy server" and press "OK".
  • Exit MSN and start MSN up again.
  • Try to sign in.

RE: HELP ME! plz? by _Art_ on 08-12-2004 at 03:22 PM

well... i said earlier that i can actually sign into other accounts with msn 6.2 but not with mine. So it can't be trying to connect trough a proxy, i will check anyway..

*checks*

nope... there is not proxy configured...

Windows Messenger should still work, it just wont be started automatically, you can start it from the startmenu. If that doesn't work then...
  • Download Mesenger Disable and run it.
  • Uncheck every option and press "Apply".
  • See if you can start Windows Messenger from the startmenu now.
If it doesn't then try this...
  • Exit every instance of MSN and Windows mesenger.
  • Press <CTRL>-<ALT>-<DEL> to make sure msmsgs.exe, msnmsgr.exe and msgplus.exe are not running anymore.
  • Now run Messenger Disable again and check the "Uninstall Windows Messenger" option, press "apply" and reboot your PC at the end.
  • After starting back up, visit http://www.windowsupdate.com and install a fresh copy of Windows Messenger from there.

Now about the problem unable to sign in at MSN Messenger with just one account, try this:
  • Exit MSN Messenger.
  • Press "Start" and select "Run", now enter "C:\Documents and Settings\ and press "OK".
  • Doubleclick on your username. If you are not sure with what username you are logged in, press the "Start" button in the lower-left of your screen and see what name it says.
  • Doubleclick on "Application Data". If you don't see that folder anywhere, then simply type "\Application Data\ in the adress bar after what is already showed there so you'll get "C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\" and press <ENTER>.
  • You should see a few folders with only numbers now.
  • Download MSN6 ID, fill in your emailadress which you are having problems with in MSN and press "Work out".
  • Now, delete the folder from your PC which has the same number as the one that you just generated.
  • Try to login at MSN (you might want to reboot so that MSN and Plus! are automatically started again)

I hope that helps, let us know.
