Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by Joe on 08-16-2004 at 06:34 PM

This sounds like a good idea to me, instead of clicking Refresh/View Latest Posts... just like the one in the shoutbox, I don't have a clue as to how hard it'd be or if it has been suggested once before, or even if it's possible, but please consider it;)

I think that this is a very good idea, it would save a lot of time and effort.

RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by Millenium_edition on 08-16-2004 at 06:43 PM

RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by Menthix on 08-16-2004 at 06:50 PM

Such thing will kill the server more then that it would actually be usefull i think.

is clicking the reload button so complex and difficult??

there are browsers (like avant browser) where you can set a refresh time for each opened page. Anyway, I think like MenthiX: That would be an unneeded load for the server.
RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by Millenium_edition on 08-16-2004 at 07:33 PM

or mozilla firefox extensions too :o

RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by RebelSean on 08-16-2004 at 09:03 PM

As, for what MenthiX said. I agree with him. But I would like to say, it wouldn't put that much of a load would it? I like the idea.(y)

For people who use MSIE, you can use this.

RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by WDZ on 08-17-2004 at 01:09 AM

It's been suggested before; putting a 1-minute refresh on the Latest Posts just like the Who's Online. I'm willing to add it, and it's not hard.

As for server load, a 1-minute refresh is no problem. I tend to manually refresh more often than that sometimes. Also, my latest.php script is quite efficient. :p

if ur on latest.php?page=2, it will refresh to latest.php, and forget the page :P

i think that if u don't specify the URL, it will refresh the current page.

RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by bach_m on 08-17-2004 at 03:34 AM

i STILL wanna be looking at the page i was on. i don't want a page i was looking at to disapear....

RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by WDZ on 08-17-2004 at 04:26 AM

But it will only disappear after 1 minute :refuck:

I guess I see the point... it will no longer refresh when you're not on the first page. Good enough?

RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by Joe on 08-17-2004 at 04:55 AM

On / Off Switch?

RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by WDZ on 08-17-2004 at 04:59 AM

It's a one minute refresh; you don't need that. :p

The Who's Online doesn't have a switch (well, it does, but it's in the admin cp :refuck:)... :dodgy:

of course I do :cheesy:
RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by WDZ on 08-17-2004 at 05:21 AM

Why? If you're going to click something to enable or disable the refresh, you might as well just click your browser's refresh button! :-/

RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by Pipish on 08-17-2004 at 05:53 AM

i get dodgy postdata error messages when i use the auto refresh so no it would not be a good idea and would be bad for the server load

Uhh... the Latest Posts refresh is nothing like the shoutbox one. :p You will not get that error.
RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by Menthix on 08-17-2004 at 11:18 AM

Personally i must say the auto refresh is very irritating. I always go to the lastest posts page and look for the oldest port i haven't read yet. Then i open every post one for one in a new tab until i reach the latest post i haven't read yet. Then i press the latest posts button again to see what hapened while i was posting.

Now it constantly refreshes and new posts are added already while i'm posting which can even push posts i didn't read yet to the 2nd page. Bottom line, i'd just like to press refresh myself. Could there be some option to rurn it off, please?

RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by Concord Dawn on 08-17-2004 at 04:10 PM

I just use Mozilla's Auto-Refresh feature. If WDZ wants to make a switch, then he'll makes one, but if he thinks it's pointless, then  no auto-refresh.  I fourth it btw.

RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by Millenium_edition on 08-17-2004 at 04:31 PM

i must admit... it's very annoying =/

RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by Menthix on 08-17-2004 at 06:44 PM

We got six people already noth liking it now :o. I think WDZ made a little mistake in his thinking. He probally thougth normally nobody would stay on the latest posts page for longer then a minute, only people who are waiting for new posts stay on pressing F5 on that page longer then a minute.
But that doesn't seem to be the case... when i check out the latest posts page i always leave that page open until i visited every post i didn't see yet (i open them in a new tab). Having the latest port page refreshed every time causes problems, also i can't keep easy track of which post i readed the last anymore.

I'd suggest one of these

  • Completely remove the refresh thing.
  • Have the refresh turned off and only turn it on when you press something like "Start Autorefresh" (should be able to stop it again too).
  • A per-member option if you want to use the refresh thing or not.

How many people like the option? :cheesy:

Anyways, if people don't like it, well maby they should get the option to turn it off in the UCP. But, what about this. A toggle thing on the bottom of the page. Like in the shoutbox. Like if you click it on, it turns it on, if you click it off, it turns it off? :)

Didn't see anyone say they actually like it yet after WDZ announced he implented it. Maybe you? That makes one :).

Kinda what i ment, although i would prefer the top of the page.

RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by Johnny_Mac on 08-18-2004 at 12:48 AM

Im not bothered about the feature tbh, as long as I can turn it off. :refuck:

I'll just delete the damn thing.

Nooo, don't! I like it. Just give them a toggle thing like the shoutbox. I realy honestly do want this feature!

I agree with MenthiX.

the best option (Y)

that would imply that a new field to the user table had to be added to the db, and I don't think it's worth it.

hahaha  can't you live without it? ^o)
well, use Avant Browser, for example.
RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by RebelSean on 08-18-2004 at 08:29 PM

I can live without it, be sometimes I am busy working on other things, and I get to the latest posts page, and the wander off and by the time I am back to that page the page has auto refreshed for me. But I do think that it should stay there, but like what MenthiX has sugested. Having a toggle thing link in the shoutbox would be awesome and a quick resolution to the problem with people liking/disliking it.

RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by marissa on 08-19-2004 at 12:06 AM

the auto things gone?:'( i liked it...:( ( im not reading 4 pages, *sigh*)

RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by RebelSean on 08-19-2004 at 12:13 AM

Ya, to many people complained, and it got deleted. I wish he would put it back with a option to turn it off in UCP. :(

RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by marissa on 08-19-2004 at 12:25 AM

crap...that really sucks. I thought it was a good feature for the board, i guess ill have to refresh after idleing then...

It doesn't make much sense to put it in the User CP. It would be more useful right on latest.php. Maybe above the table on the right side. I'd probably store the setting in a cookie, but I already have one cookie for that script, and I'd rather not set another one... maybe I'll combine all the settings into one cookie. (y)

While you were waiting for it to refresh, did it say "[Refresh On]"? If so, then the meta refresh code must have been in the page, and it was a problem with your browser. :-/
RE: Latest Posts Auto-Refresh by RebelSean on 08-21-2004 at 03:46 AM

It did say Refresh On. I dunno im using I.E 6.0, but now it works. So forget bout it.:p
