Help, email address history by Doc OC on 08-16-2004 at 10:59 PM

Hello,

When I sign into msn messenger, theres a place to put my email address in. In that place it also displays a bunch of other email addresses of past users on my pc. my question is : How do i delete these addresses?

Go to Start > Run and type "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes) and click OK or press Enter.

Click the Advanced tab and click Manage passwords. Click the email addresses and click Remove, click OK a few times and they should be gone (when you reboot your computer).

It seems that there is a little problem while doing this. I do click on remove, but nothing actually happens, and when i reboot the computer, the adresses are still there. Doesn't this thing work with windows xp and msn 6.0 or is there some other reason?

Greetz

Edit: Some one told me on the webchat related to this site how to do this: Search your hard drive for a file named 'credentials', and delete that file. After rebooting your computer, a new file that doesn't contain those irritating sign-in names will be generated.

The Dutch Windows XP contains a bug: when you click Remove, nothing happens......

But

I realy suggest you to not delete all those files/directories just like that if you don't know what those directories and files EXACTLY are... This can cause many troubles and side-effects.... Be very carefull in what you delete and stay in the directory of your windows useraccount, don't delete any other credential....

In other words, searching your HD for those files is a very bad idea. Just go directly to the correct directory (for XP):
C:\Documents and Settings\your windows username\Application Data\Microsoft\Credentials
and maybe also:
C:\Documents and Settings\your windows username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Credentials
And there delete the subfolders. But do not delete anything else in another directory!!!

After that, reboot...

Also, there is a tool to disable (and enable) the credentials, so that they are not saved anymore:

all this tool does is this:

Change C:\Documents and Settings\your windows username\Application Data in the above posts to either C:\Windows\Application Data, or, if you have user profiles, C:\Windows\Profiles\your windows username\Application Data.

i did already remove the files and used "anti credentials" but msn messenger will always display the last email used, is this normal?

That seems normal behaviour to me :)
