Radeon or GeForce? by DJeX on 08-29-2004 at 11:51 PM

I'm thinking of buying a new video card and can't decide which one is a better make. Radeon or GeForce. I need it for mostly for games so I need a really good card. I'm trying to stay in the $300 range.

What card is better? And is there a better on than those 2?

This would be good for me too and it dosnt have to be in the $300 just below 400 is ok ive been looking at the Radeon 9800 Pro, 9800XT, 9600 and Nvidia Geforce4

For $300 you can get a GeForce 6800

Gainward nVIDIA GeForce 6800 Video Card, 128MB DDR, 256-Bit, TV-Out/DVI, 8X AGP, Model"Gainward Power Pack Ultra/2100 TV-DVI Golden Sample (GS), One Slot design" -RETAIL

For $400 you can get a GeForce 6800GT

eVGA nVIDIA GeForce 6800GT Video Card, 256MB GDDR3, 256-Bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "256-A8-N344-AX" -RETAIL

On a side note, I use a GeForce 6800GT for gaming and have no driver issues and much better performance than a 9700 Pro (my old card which did have driver issuses).

That's probably because the GF6800 is much newer than the Radeon 9700.

IMO, go for a Radeon 9800XT. Top performance, top clarity, no driver issues, basically the best card there is.

Get a GeForce4 MX460, it's very good and I have no problems with it, I haven't checked the price yet...

But the drivers on the Radeon were quite frankly shocking.  A GeForce 6800 would outperform a 9800XT for less money aswell.

nVidia only makes the drivers, as for the video card, ATI's are better built, but some of the nVidia cards are kick ass too, but overall, the nVidia driver's are much better then ATI's that if i found two comparable cards for the same price, i would choose nVidia over ATI anyday

Last comparison I saw, the drivers offered similar performance, but the ATI's graphics were clearer. That makes the ATI drivers better.

Yeah, go with the radeon. The latest cards for both nVidia and Ati are both quite similar as far as frames per second go. But the nVidia cards cut corners in certain calculations, such as colour calcs.
They dont do true 32bit colour calculations, they reduce them to 24, 16 and sometimes even 8bit in order to keep the fps up.

Go with the ati cards, good performance and excelent image quality.

I'd like to know where you heard that about nVidia cards.  Here in the UK I can get a 6800 for  circa £200.  I can get a 9800XT for circa £275.  In all the reviews & tests of the X800 Series, 6800 Series, 9800 series & 5900 series the 6800 or the 6800GT provide the best performance/price ration.

Thanks for all your help, I think I'll go with the ATI Radeon.
