MSN7 - GUI Screw up - W/ & w/o Multi-format by MoRiA on 11-09-2004 at 09:51 PM

Yeah been trying MsgPlus 3.40 (latest build as of this morning) with MSN 7 (also latest build), and I get the famous GUI screw up with and without the multi-format contact list thing.

It hasn't seemed as slow with it turned off, however I'm still getting the GUI doing strange things.

Sorry if someone else has reported this already (since this morning's build), but given the apparent lack of thread naming conventions around here, and the search engine's limitation of 3-character terms, it's not too easy to find these things out :p

I mean what sort of help is "annoying msgplus bug", when naming a thread? C'mon guys, some of us don't live on the forums ;)

Confirmed. I get the same result too :(.

What GUI bug do you get with the multi-format option turned off? I would really liek to see a screenshot

Email sent. Posting screenshots publically of MSN Messenger 7 violates NDA\ToS so I sent it to you via email. :\

Weird... do you have enabled transparency for chat windows?

RE: MSN7 - GUI Screw up - W/ & w/o Multi-format by EvilSeph on 11-10-2004 at 04:03 AM

Nope, I hardly even played with the preferences :p

and can you confirm that this bug never occurs when Plus! is not running? also, I would like you to try to disable the Enhanced Plus! Icon from the chat window and see if it solves the problem (note that thisis a very important issue that got t be fixed as soon as possible, thank you for any help you can provide).

haaaha! so it does happen without Plus! after all? I'm still doing tests to detect when the problem lies but I agree at least on somethin: for what I can see, it's a GDI object leak.

yeh ive had a similar problem where my contact list and toasts appear sort of "in" other programs if you know what i mean....

RE: MSN7 - GUI Screw up - W/ & w/o Multi-format by MoRiA on 11-11-2004 at 08:15 AM

Yup. TB's is exactly the bug I'm talking about. Mine's gone to the point of actually showing parts of Messenger on top of mIRC and other applications, leaving me with no choice but to restart MSN.. Havn't tried without Plus!, although Plus! appears to have stopped hooking my conversation windows recently so no commands work, I don't have the extra features button above Send, and no colours work. Contact list is displaying colour codes, too. This may be why I havn't noticed any issues since restarting MSN the last time, but it would go directly against TB's observations...

* MoRiA finds GDI objects column in task manager. Woo.

MSN Messenger 7 (with Plus!) is currently using 2406, while MSN Messenger 6 on my server is using only 287.

Will try it without Plus! later...

my messenger 7 is using 4,054 :|

RE: MSN7 - GUI Screw up - W/ & w/o Multi-format by MoRiA on 11-11-2004 at 09:04 PM

Heh mine's on 5,956 now :P I'll test it with MsgPlus killed in a sec, now that I've finished filling out my UCAS application form at last :D

Right. I managed to get MSN's GDI count to 9997 before I noticed a GUI bug (but it was running very slowly since about 6000). Once I pushed it past 10,000 it totally crashed, the whole screen was filled with random GUI elements and I had to kill the process.

TB's findings do appear to be correct though. I just killed MsgPlus.exe, restarted msnmsgr.exe, signed in, then opened a window to each of my contacts, and closed them again. The number of GDI objects went from around 100 (with all windows closed), to around 1000 (with 15 windows open), then when I closed them all again they only dropped to about 400. It may "only" be an increase of 300, but over an entire evening of chatting that's gradually increasing until it reaches the aforementioned 10,000...
... ack... sorry to triple(!!) post, but while MSN Messenger on its own seems to have some kind of GDI leak, it's amplified greatly with MsgPlus! running...

900 with just the contact list window.
5000 with the 15 conversations open.
1300 with all windows closed again.

Tested it too, same problem. Goes up pretty fast :o, especially with the Plus! process on.
