Messenger Plus! Beta disables Unicode characters in my contact list (msn7) by Mike on 11-24-2004 at 01:49 PM

Hello.
In msn7, without Plus! running, I can see the unicode character in my contacts' name.
When plus! is running, then unicode characters show a square.
Also this isn't happening when I have disabled the feature of formating the contact list.
This wasn't happening with the first beta of MsgPlus! for msn 7.

My (!VER):
Windows Version: Windows XP, 5.01.2600 (SP1)
Messenger Client Version: 7.0.0425
Messenger Plus! Version: 3.40.0110

I just tried and I don't seem to have any problem... can you tell me what character exactly you're tryign to put in your name and post a screenshot of how it looks in yoru contact list? I tried to add jpanese text to my name and I didn't see any problem.

The problem is not your friendly name.
The problem is the names of your contacts.
I have included a picture.

Please excuse my :dodgy: image editing skills

As you can see in version 3.40.107 unicode characters were not disabled.
However, because of users putting bold and italic in their names, and because of unicode characters, the name got a little cut-off (I included the "Add Contact" button)

If you want, try for yourself:
Add yourself to your contact list, and then add some japanese characters to your name.
See what I mean...?
Or is it only me...

By the way I forgot to tell that I have Custom Names disabled.

I tried and I still have no problem..could you post the first two screenshots again but without hidingthe name of your contact? I need to see what exactly happens in your list. Thanks.

Well, the part I was hiding, was just an email.
Here's a pic with full name showing.

Thank you for the pic... could you send me an email at mplus@patchou.com? I have something in mind and I'd like to send you a test version to see if it solves your problem.

Thank you!

First of all, sorry for double posting.

Then I would like to say to Patchou that the version he sent me, didn't work. :(
It's all the same like version 3.40.110...

By the way, I noticed another bug with this option turned off.
The formatting characters, are becoming white... :(
So, there is a big space (look at the last picture I posted)...

Off-topic: SSL seems to be working with Gmail :)

The spaces when the option is turned off are just a side effect, it's not a bug and this can't be fixed, sorry.

As for the fix not working, I'll send you another one today (a link on hotmail).

For your information, Patchou found the problem.
He told me to send a screenshot of each tab in my "Regional And Languages Option"
Then he told me this:

Hi Mike,

I think these options could very well be the problem… except if you have a very good reason for them, could you uncheck “Turn off advanced text services”, restart your computer and check if the problem is fixed?. If not, please check “Install files for East Asian languages”, restart windows and check again (it is important to do the first test separately).

Thank you,

Patchou.
And if you are wondering why this is caused:

Hi Mike,

The reason is pretty technical but I can explain it to you for reference if you’re interested: by default Messenger sets the text controls of the contact list to an Auto-Font mode. This means that the control is in charge of choosing its own font based on what text is displayed. For various reasons, Messenger Plus! must disable the Auto-Font mode when it displays colors and in that case, the responsibility of choosing the right font goes to Windows, not the control. Windows chooses fonts based on the settings you changed and that’s why you had problems.

Thank you for helping to solve the situation, it will prove to be useful later when people will complain about the same thing :)

Patchou
So to fix the problem in Windows XP:
Start -> Control Panel -> Switch to Classic View -> Regional and Language Options
From the window that opens : Languages -> Check "Install files for East Asian Languages"
Then in the same tab, click details -> Advanced -> Uncheck "Turn off advanced text services" if checked
Click OK and then again OK.
Windows will start copying some files.
You might asked to insert your Windows XP CD!
After the file copying progress is finished, windows will ask to restart your computer.
Choose yes.

Then, the characters should display normaly :)

I just installed the Beta and I am having the same problem.

The above suggestion about unchecking services does not work because it is already unchecked.
