Yes it is possible, just sign up with your e-mail address at register.passport.net...then wait for an e-mail back to tell you what else you need to do. Then just sign into MSN with that account.

you wont be able to access your emails for the account from hotmail if the email address is non hotmail

Are you signing into Hotmail or MSN. If MSN;
Make sure you have entered the e-mail address in both fields that ask you to, (at the top and bottom of the form). Also make sure you have received the e-mail from .NET explaining what you need to do.
