what is the software called that... by Supersonicdarky on 03-09-2005 at 08:17 PM

...can delete ALL files on your hardrive? Reformating doesn't delete all. It deletes all saved all logs and crap. The only other way to get rid of them is to physicly damage it...

RE: what is the software called that... by Plik on 03-09-2005 at 08:19 PM

Formating will delete all the files on your hard drive

Reformatting gets rid of everything on your harddrive, including Windows.

Partioning and formating with WindowsXP or Windows 2000 or with DOS 6

yeah but data still can be retreived. i recommend "System Mechanic" it has a DriveScrubber option which overwrites the hard drive to the point that information can in no way be recovered. ;)

Edit: there is a 30 day trial on their official website - http://www.iolo.com/

btw be careful with System Mechanic, because if you use options you dont understand you can really mess up your system
RE: what is the software called that... by wj on 03-09-2005 at 08:31 PM

Not really. All that data is still there, It's just the map of the drive has been deleted. If you really want to distroy the data on the drive you need a drive burner. It writes 0's to every bit on the drive multiple times to eliminate the ability to recover the data on the drive.

if you mean with DriveScrubber -  (in the program you have that option) you can make a bootable floppy, and just put it in, restart the computer and follow the directions. the Drive Scrubber overwrites your entire hard drive.

Edit: it erases ALL the data on the physical drive. so if you have partitions - there is no option to just erase one partition everything will be gone.

There is also another piece of software from Mcafee called I think DataGone I have it but not uploaded to anywhere.  This will really do the trick.  It's small fits on a floppy and does the trick the only thing is that it does take a long time to do but this will really destroy your Hard Drive.  Interested?

RE: what is the software called that... by Supersonicdarky on 03-09-2005 at 08:54 PM

i'll stick with drivescrubber unless datagone or any other software is better...

i think supersonicdarky wanted to get rid of all the data on the HDD, not destroy the HDD :P

try the utility posted by wj, this will make the data unrecoverable due to being overwritten by 0's as wj said.
RE: what is the software called that... by Supersonicdarky on 03-09-2005 at 09:12 PM

to download the program, it needs authorization, anyone knoe the password or other location for it?

RE: what is the software called that... by Concord Dawn on 03-09-2005 at 09:15 PM

If you don't have any hacker/techie enemies or important information, then just reformating should suffice. Otherwise go for wj's utility, pretty good. Although a deguassing loop works much better IMO. :P

:P same with drivescrubber it overwrites with 0's and/or random #s you have a lot of control over how it does it and can interrupt the process at any time
RE: what is the software called that... by Supersonicdarky on 03-09-2005 at 09:20 PM

i also need  a program that can recover the files (before zeroing the disk)

It's binary, there isn't really a whole lot of numbers that you can use in binary, just 1s and 0s. Unless you use an advanced HDD that stores information in decimal.

Why don't you just backup everything from Windows (or whatever OS you use) before you wipe the disk?
RE: what is the software called that... by Supersonicdarky on 03-09-2005 at 09:25 PM

no, i want a program that can recover files that don't get deleted after formating the disk, the opposite of diskscrubber which deletes them

and .. system mechaninc also has the option of recovering files. its pretty good. i used it...

here's the link to the trial

Edit: :P i know its 1's and 0's btw, just i'm stupid sometimes with what i say.
RE: what is the software called that... by Supersonicdarky on 03-09-2005 at 09:37 PM

does system mechanic do both (erase/recover)?

its called FAT (file allocation table).... just a question: doesnt Full format (as opposed to Quick format) do the job?!?!
RE: what is the software called that... by Supersonicdarky on 03-09-2005 at 09:45 PM

no, it doesn't get deleted for security purpuses...

RE: what is the software called that... by wj on 03-09-2005 at 10:24 PM

Ok, Norton and McAfee dont do the job either.

Use the GWScan I linked, it will do the job and it will do it right.

Uhhh.... no. You summed it up fine in the previous sentence, then you went and said something stupid like this. It's binary, always.
