Athlon64 or P4 by teddytim on 03-10-2005 at 03:02 AM

Does anyone know where I can get comparison information on P4 or Athlon64?
I came into some extra money into my "elctronics" fund and I was looking to get a new PC built.

Price-wise, a P4-E 3.60 GHz CPU and an Athlon64 3800+ are about the same, but with a 3800+ only listed at 2.4 Ghz, I was wondering if they performed the same and if they do, why the difference in GHz "numbering"?

It just confuses us less "tech-savy" people even more.

I've pretty much gotten all the other PC components, just deciding on the CPU and motherboard.

I have an AMD Athlon 3500+ and it out-performs my friend's CPU (@ 3.8 Ghz, though not an extreme). Athlon 64 processors out-perform all the Pentium 4's, not to mention the deffect the P4's have.

The P4's over 3.0 Ghz get so hot that they under-perform when they heat up. You could be in the middle of a high-end game, then suddenly get lag bcz your 3.8 Ghz processor just dropped to 3.2 Ghz to prevent frying itself [they do this no matter what kind of coolant system you have].

Go for the Athlon 64, though the 3800+ is a waste of money - stick with the 3500+ (which I have and can vouch for) which is boatloads cheaper.

AMD athlon is the best budy.

Definately Athlon 64. Price per performance, they kick Intel's ass... even if they were the SAME price, I'd still pick the Athlon 64 since it's faster...

I've got an Athlon 64 3000+ (faster than the P4 3.2GHz in my experience) on the new low-power core, which should be overclockable to about 3800+ speeds when I get around to it... and it cost $140 Canadian :D (As a matter of reference, the P4 3.2GHz costs $295 from the same store).

Plus, many of the PCI Express Athlon 64 mainboards support SLI, which is a great way to get kickass graphics performance on a budget.

AMD Athlon 64 Definitely, I'm running an AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+, and that out-performs my mates pentium 4 cpu thats supposed to be faster than mine ... I would never get a pentium again :-/.

AMD all the way :refuck:
alot cheaper as well :)
the aritecture is alot better then Intel's. They've just been increasing the gigahertz without improving the chipset much at all. But it in the future it could get more competitive as Intel is now focusing on more "work being done" per pulse instead of focusing on pushing more gigahertz :P

go for amd athlon64...;)

My Crappy AMD 2600+ Cpu out performed my step fathers Intel pentuim4 3.2Gig 1Gig Ram an same Hardware just not motherboard ,, now my AMD3200+ still out performs his p4 , only pentuim iv';e had was a 120 which i thought was shit hot in those times :)

intel are mainly working on correcting there problems with there Cpu's  before they get any further into Making faster Cpu's

I love P4 not Celeron's though just Intel Pentium 4 because they are reliable and tested.

So are AMDs.

Have you ever tried an AMD? :-/

Don't pay too much attention to GHz ratings: they don't reveal the true performance of the hardware. The AMD numbering system is rooted at 1400, which is equivalent to an original Athlon running 1.4GHz. So, an AMD Athlon64 3800+ running at 2.4GHz performs comparably to an original Athlon running at 3.8GHz (in theory).

Anyway, for side-by-side tests, :google: Tom's Hardware Guide
