If you want your desktop to "look 1337 with icons", you might wanna try Object Dock: http://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/

You can make your desktop look like this:

Yes of course you can 'obtain' a paid version, but that's not the legal way.

Another program, which is free, is Free Launch Bar. It allows you to create menu's in you're quick start bar, like the normal start menu, where you can put your shortcuts.

try samurize.. I never used it but i seen other people use it from their desktop screenshot

But samurize is DIFFICULT and not recommend if you just want a simple desktop tool to show stats. But Johny was talking about things to do with his desktop icons.

talking about icons, you'd also like to take a look at FOOOD's Icons... definitely the best ones in it's class...

RE: Looking for Desktop Gizmos.. by user13774 on 03-21-2005 at 11:13 AM

yes they are :D. I use them myself for directories on my 'download' drive and for icons on my True Launch Bar.

i downloaded some things from there, how do you use them?

If you download the icons, you get a zip file full of .ico files. You can change a shortcut icon (like on your desktop), you can change a folder icon (see below) and you can change a file type icon.

Changing a shortcut icon:
Right-click on the icon on the desktop (note: it only works with shortcuts). The context menu will appear.
Click on Properties.
Click on the Change Icon button.
Click on the icon of your choice, i.E. go to the folder you extracted the ico files in.
Click on OK.

Change a folder icon:
