Graphic Cards? by Jhrono on 04-07-2005 at 04:52 PM
Well i've been doing some projects to buy a new GFX card...and i have 2 doubts...I have a Nvidia Geforce4 Fx5200 256mb...and i aint satisfied..
1st doubt -
ATI vs Nvidia?Who's best?(Note i want the GFX card for a good game performance)
2nd doubt -
Is this one good or is it usefull to spend some more € and buy this one?
....
If you don't like the ones above, which one do you advise me to buy, with a 275 € limit...
Thanks..

ATi is the better of the two IMO, but they have a wide variety of amazing cheap cards...
The 9600 series have some great cards... depends on which one you go for though ...

I just noticed this thread
I want to point out, the x700 pro is PCI-E so unless your PC is BRAND NEW (most of the boards with PCI-E are s939 (64-bit processor boards)) you can't use the x700.
Go with a 9600 PRO, a 9800 PRO or a 9800 XT.

Currently the 6600GT is the card to get and is within your price bracket. It also come sin both PCI-E & AGP forms so make sure you get the right one for your system.

I have a X800 PCI-E in a 939 gigabyte board with an Athalon 3500+processor with duel pipeline DDR 400mhz memory @ a split gig ram ( 2x512sticks capable of 4x1gig sticks totalRAM possible ). The frontside bus on the 64chip and the motherboard are 2000mhz and this thing screams! My gaming severely improved due to this improvement.

Ive got a 9600 XT and it handles games like HL2 preatty easyly

Mine handles it well but...man it's not the best do you get me?

I prefer ATI (all my pcs are using ATI)
my stolen one had an x800 this one has a 9800XT one has a 9250XT and one has somthing i cant remember.
Out of your two choices id go for the X700 but you do realise that it is PCI- EXPRESS make sure your computer can handle that.

i say X700 my dad has it on one of his computers.. i'd say it's pretty good.. but that's compared to my 3d rage pro agp 2x
he's got the radeon X800XT on one comp and nothing tops it.

GeForce 6800 GT's in SLi configuration produces better results than a X850XT.
Here are a few comparisons between ATi & nVidia:
Comparison X700 Pro vs 6600GT (Anandtech)
6600 vs 9800, 5950, 6800, X800 etc (TomsHardware)
Bear in mind that a 6200 will play most games fine at 1024x768. At present AGP vs PCI-E is pretty much a dead heat. They both perform equally well with current software.

The X700 is being bridged to agp using atis own bridge chip and will be available soon
the Geforce FX 5200 is not a geforce 4
the geforce 4 series includes as follows
from the MX (non pixel shader series)
NVIDIA_NV17.DEV_0170.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 460"
NVIDIA_NV17.DEV_0171.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440"
NVIDIA_NV17.DEV_0172.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420"
NVIDIA_NV17.DEV_0173.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440-SE"
NVIDIA_NV17.DEV_0178.1 = "NVIDIA Quadro4 550 XGL"
and
from the TI and quadro series (all pixel shader 1.1 capable)
NVIDIA_NV20.DEV_0203.1 = "NVIDIA Quadro DCC"

Geforce FX is actually equivalent to Geforce 5 but as the 3dfx team was helping create this card Geforce FX was used as the name
these cards include

the latest Geforce line of which the Ultra and GT versions oft he 6800 have 16 pipes the nu version has 12, and any other cards after wards has only 8 bar the fact that the 6600GT only has a 128bit memory bus which slows things down
the 6800 series is the strongest series ranging from AU $1000 to its lowest costing card which is AU$400
a 6800NU is prefererable over a 6600GT as the 6800 has twice the memory bandwidth allowing for higher bandwidth and which allows the use of higher levels of antialiasing and anisotropic filtering (some 6800nus can also have the other 4 pipes unlocked to achieve 6800GT speeds)
