[Split] Reputation System by Pyroteq on 04-11-2005 at 01:18 PM

Ive come with this out of Tashas leaving thread
No flaming "Its a leaving thread bla bla lots of people do it"

[rant]
I think the reputation system needs a review, not just because of people like Tasha complaining about it.
But some of the forum really focuses on it, and its true you only get good rateing for having taste in somthing, being a chick, or having a picture of a chick.
Ill probly even get minus for posting this.
Anyway, i wont press it too heavily but just somthing for the mods and the forum members to consider.

I  have said to several people on MSN, and a few people have said to me, (and people who aren't signed up say the same), that I think the reputation system should be gone. It causes too much tension, and there are people like me, and others, who don't really care about it, but then there are the ones that are jealous of people with higher reputation, when they have a lower postcount. Reputation and postcount mean not that much to me on here, or on any other forum.

RE: [Split] Reputation System by Pyroteq on 04-11-2005 at 01:31 PM

Postcount also becomes somewhat of a competition but i wouldnt want that removed because it sort of shows how active you are..
What ever happened to the good old forums i mean if you look at my joining date back in 03 I joined then and only posted for about a week, but i remember the community being great and helpfull i dont remember ever seeing any sort of fights or complaints.. Then i start posting again half way through 04 and it was okay, and now imo were seeing more of it..

RE: [Split] Reputation System by Ash_ on 04-11-2005 at 01:41 PM

just remove it. it was good for a while. but people are changing their whole personality to obtain positve rep. its stupid tbfh.

RE: [Split] Reputation System by _Humphreys on 04-11-2005 at 01:42 PM

Yeah I mean I am not nearly as paranoid and violent as I used to thanks to the rep system :D

RE: [Split] Reputation System by Pyroteq on 04-11-2005 at 01:48 PM

Okay so its worked out for Carltos, But that prooves my point that everyones basing what they do and say around a stupid reputation.

RE: [Split] Reputation System by RaceProUK on 04-11-2005 at 02:50 PM

I made a post on my blog which hinted at my displeasure at reputation being reduced to a mere number. If the rep system must stay, let's hide all the numbers, and instead have ratings like 'Helpful', 'Spammer', 'Average' - y'know, general ratings with a hint of the vague. Also means less to compare with = less to compete with.

Better would be to just hide post and rep from all non full members. Stops them from whining about high post/rep count and also makes it so that they see the forums as they truly are for a little while before they get handed the post and rep counts.

Senior members would be better..(Senior start at 250 posts...)

Well. It's staying for now.

If you think it's a bad system, ignore it.

RE: [Split] Reputation System by Plik on 04-11-2005 at 03:58 PM

I agree with wj, all this "remove T&T" "remove reps" is rubbish really.
Removing somthing isnt the answer, everyone growing up and stoping acting so childish about it is the answer.
Yeh in some special cases it causes problems (I.E. Tasha and Joa dont feel they deserve their reps) In that case the reps should be deleted and then user can rate them properly.

I'm not really advocating it's removal, but I think it'd work better if reputation wasn't a number.

What would be better? There would always be different levels (and therefore the possibility of competition), and those levels would be based on numbers.
RE: [Split] Reputation System by Chestah on 04-12-2005 at 03:18 AM

True, having a reptuation system is always going to be stating that someone is potentially better then someone else.
People that are helping alot deserve the positive feedback but people that are trying their best but not getting people giving them positive reps can be depressive ;).

I don't really care what happens, but its obvious that something needs to be done

RE: [Split] Reputation System by Pipish on 04-12-2005 at 03:43 AM

yes it should stay but it means nothing tbh its not how people think of you realy its if they could be botherd or not to give you one i think everyone deserve at least one rep for something but i dont pay much atention to it . its a good system and should stay and if people dont like it ignore it as wj said

Tell that to the rep-obsessed people. 8-)

Then they blame others because of their higher reps and stuff. And while we all know they have no control over other people.
RE: [Split] Reputation System by Joa on 04-12-2005 at 04:36 AM

i think the rep system is important, and should stay.

when not abused, the reputation system helps distinguish people (such as Cookie and Sunshine among others) for their help and contribution to the community. it is sort of like getting awards, and indicates that those people did something worthwhile, and that they are respected members. the reputation votes are also a way of showing appreaciation towards the person who is being voted for.

when it comes to negative votes, it can really help a person see the mistake they are making. it can help people improve.

i think that the system should stay
, but, more attention should have been payed when GIVING a vote. i think after the series of events that took place, members of these forums will hopefully be more sensible when giving out either positive or negative rep points. it is also my hope that their reasons for voting will become more legitimate.

True, but I think scaling the numbers to, say, one of five levels, should reduce some of the rep-hunting.
RE: [Split] Reputation System by Tasha on 04-12-2005 at 05:12 PM

* Tasha makes a more detailed post.

When not abused, the reputation is very good, and can motivate people to continue posting, and help out more.

However, sometimes, people give reputations too quickly to 'n00bs' that make mistakes. I know I have done in the past, but i'm gonna be more lenient with them.

The reputation system has a very high value to some members, and they get very uptight if someone who has been here for less time then them, has a higher rep. To be completely honest, it shouldn't matter. It is just a number that doesn't actually reflect who a person is, and what they are really really like.

However, I guess it should stay, as it is important, and will help to make people want to help far more, and make them keep coming back.

That is exactly the point I tried to make above. I really don't like the idea of percentage being a number. Real world reputations are never numbers.
