I have a contact who always appears as mobile yet when questioned they say they dont know what that is. It there a way that they can appear to me as mobile if they are just connected as normal or is there another explaination?

yeah you can do that with Messenger discovery.

Its done by adding the number "1" to the clientID

You can't, since it uses the exact same method that connecting with a mobile uses.
