And not by Microsoft. Nor the MSN Messenger team. In fact, the build wasn’t real, at all. Volvok and Ahmad (A-Patch) were kind enough to do a reshack of MSN Messenger, changed the build to 814 and added a couple of “features”. Must say they are very good reshackers though, because even though the build is fake it does run faster (or would that be psychology? ). Wondered why there never was an installer?

The build spread like crazy, as usual. Mess.be kindly “copied’ it onto their front page and Mastaline did the same, without checking with the people who obtained the build. Even the BETA newsgroups were occupied with it for a while, with all kinds of conspiracy theories about MSN Butterflies leaking it and people breaching their NDA’s and what not more. Some BETA tester even reported a stunning 12 bug reports with screenshots and all (ouch!).

And you thought the community was starting to get boring? Dead? Well Volvok and Ahmad proved quite the opposite: It’s alive and kicking and MSN Messenger is still very popular. With their very well planned prank they showed how many people are really involved. I had a good laugh over it, I hope you did too. Oh and you might want to restore to build 777 .

April fools with an extension cord!
(And appologies to those offended)

RE: The MSN Butterfly Effect ( 814 was experimental ) - {http://msnblog.stuffplug.com/ } by .Roy on 04-23-2005 at 03:44 PM

meh...

I didnt notice any difference actually :refuck:

I just downloaded it to be "updated"

lol chris4 do you still want the link to download it :refuck:

This is a really funny joke. but dont you think the people who did this can get in trouble? First of all they used reshack on msnger. Which is illegal. And then they uploaded it to the web. (even worse). Then they sent everyone links to it and made it look official...

RE: The MSN Butterfly Effect ( 814 was experimental ) - {http://msnblog.stuffplug.com/ } by Mnjul on 04-23-2005 at 03:49 PM

The point is that people should just never download/install/use leaked build, or whatever that doesn't come from MSN Messenger's official download page. If everyone knows and sticks to it, such unofficial (or even in-native) build wouldn't spread...

I could say this is enough illegal and much more serious than simply leaking private betas...

Exactly. The purpose of all this was to highlight this.

It has raised some very important issues.

Only download from the official microsoft website!

That really was one successful prank, but it's worrying how many people ran the file in that folder. It could have done anything to our computers.

Meh maybe Ahmed (spelling?) will make a special allowance for this in his A-Patch because he made this build :P

RE: The MSN Butterfly Effect ( 814 was experimental ) - {http://msnblog.stuffplug.com/ } by Chris4 on 04-23-2005 at 10:02 PM

The normal MSN Messenger 777 build doesn't work on my pc at the moment but the fake build does, lmao.

Sorry, don't exactly get what you mean, but you can just run the msnmsgr.exe file from the extracted folder when you download it.
