Mines 1 hour 45 minutes.

1hour on Lord of the Flies essay.

45 minutes on poetry comparison.

RE: GCSEs by M73A on 05-24-2005 at 08:37 PM

i have 2 langauge exams:@ because mines a language college, ive done all my mocks got the proper ones next year.... but i still have mock orals :@..... i dont want to do any languages but we are FORCED to because tis a 'language college', i find it really unfair that we HAVE to do 2 languages...

my plan for the orals is to sit there and se my favourite sentences..

je ne comprend pas..

and

no comprendo...

my teacher know i dont want to be there, i sleep through the lesson... so the can go shove the exam imo...

RE: GCSEs by Zephyr on 05-24-2005 at 08:44 PM

I do 2 languages as well, but through choice. Russian and French. The orals aren't too bad.

Repetez vous s'il vous plait, plus lentement comes in handy too.

I see. I do it with AQA exam board. Most of my other subjects are with edexcel though.

But, 2 hours 15 minutes is long. My longest exam is 2 hours which is Statistics.

For me, these are as long as my science exams, which are also 2 hours 15 mins.

Same as me. I did the question about Simon and Piggy. It wasn't as bad as i thought it would be. I don't think i did too well on the poetry though. Just glad it's over now.
RE: GCSEs by mad_onion on 05-25-2005 at 04:35 PM

well you wouldnt do the other question would you "Why is the novel called Lord of the Flies?" what kind of question is that. i think everyone in the country did the second one

RE: GCSEs by saralk on 05-25-2005 at 04:37 PM

I guess it would have something to do with flies running around aimlessly and having no leader, so its like a faux leader.

*shrugs* probably not, i didn't even read the novel :p

Well, Lord of the Flies is the direct translation of Beelzebub which is...

You can find out here
RE: GCSEs by paperless on 05-25-2005 at 10:10 PM

Can you explain better what this is?

RE: GCSEs by Zephyr on 05-25-2005 at 10:17 PM

The book i am studying for English Literature is called 'Lord of the Flies'

Lord of the Flies is a translation of Beelzebub.

Beelzebub was originally the name of a god worshipped in the Philistine City of Ekron, but later became the name people referred to the devil by.

So Lord of the Flies really means the devil and the book is about evil and stuff so it fits well.

In the book, the lord of the flies is represeted as a pig's head on a stick which is surrounded by flies.

RE: GCSEs by Veggie on 05-26-2005 at 11:21 AM

Music is not a dos subject, I went in for eight hours on a saturday to create my integrated assignment two days before the exam because I had been dossing all year:P

I had my first triple science paper today, it was biology. This is by the far the easiest paper I will ever do i science, I finished half an hour early. Alas, this will not be true for the others. Who else does triple science apart from saralk and jren? And I was OCR board, I didn't have a question about flys in my genetic section lol.

And finally, who finds they use the time after they've finished thinking about anything and everything? It's fun. I thought about my feet.

I agree, Music is not a dos subject. I find it a more fun subject than most, but certainly not a dos. I spent ages on writing my compositions and it was no easy job.
RE: GCSEs by tomfletcherman on 06-06-2005 at 09:48 PM

The first two compositions are the ones hardest to get started with. My special occasions piece was four pages long  with a violin, bass guitar and piano in, and the teacher wouldn't stop pointing out little bits. You think a piece is finished, but it is only finished after a lot of reviewing. I also did a waltz for my other piece.

Monster.rat what pieces did you choose to compose?
Anyone what did you do?

I did music with edexcel and i think it is slightly different to yours.

In our class, we wrote loads of compositions throughout the year, then improved the ones we wanted to submit. My best two compositions were a ground bass piece and a musicals piece which was fine as they were from different sections, but I had to perform one of the compositions. My ground bass piece for like 10 instruments and they only composition i could perform was a rubbish ternary piece, so i did musicals and ternary.

Not really sure as i don't know the autralian system. GCSEs are a two year course which we start in the school year when we are 14/15. We then take our exams the next year when we turn 16.

Wouldn't that make sense?

I had english language today and i think it went quite well. There was a passage by bill bryson called "why no one walks" and it was about how Americans all use cars when they could just walk. It was quite amusing. French tomorrow, better get a good nights sleep.
RE: GCSEs by user27089 on 06-08-2005 at 10:39 PM

I really hate exams, I think it's stupid, you're put under loads of stress revising, you have to sit in a claustraphobic room for 2 hours in silence, you just want to scream, you don't know the answers, you just want to walk out...

It's too stressful, I bet you any money, that if it exams were done in different situations, people would get better marks...

I hate just sitting there at the end, I counted bricks and stuff, oh and of course, sharpened all of my pencils... Inc. crayons.

RE: GCSEs by gif83 on 06-08-2005 at 10:45 PM

Last year in my finals of university, one of the exams went sooo wrong for me... i should have done quite well in it but i completely blanked out. one of the questions was identical to a question in a past paper (two years back i think). I had done that past paper in the morning perfectly fine. However, i completely blanked out and couldn't think of how to do it. In fact, i couldn't remember how to do any of the questions... i couldn't even really attempt to answer them. So what i ended up doing during the exam was write apology notes to the markers in the answer booklet and also did some doodles. Actually they ended up as more than just doodles since i had enough time to come up with some pretty cool artwork. in the end i got 0 for that exam. ah well, i'll stop rambling now.

I'm not too sure about that. What sort of situations do you mean. I personally don't mind exams. I used to really hate them and got really nervous, but i think that as you do more and more, you begin to not think that bad of them.

I do agree with hating sitting at the end, though. We had a Maths paper yesterday which was 2 hours long. I finished after 45 minutes, checked it through a few times and i still had an hour left. I was watching the second hand tick on the big clock. Luckily they let people you wanted to leave early leave after 1 1/2 hours. I just can't wait till mine are over now. 22 June is the date.

RE: GCSEs by user27089 on 06-08-2005 at 10:54 PM

I can't wait until the exams are over either, I have the bus to myself, and I have my mates of course, we are the ruling authority of the school, in a way.

And of course Saral can start doing the damn php :refuck:... not that we're using him, he's just a great friend, so we're going to wait for him to finish before we start the coding, we have a good team:

  • Dempsey
  • Millenium Edition
  • Johny
  • Saralk
  • Me
  • -dt-
  • Titty

I don't know why I posted that, but, you know ;).
RE: GCSEs by jren207 on 06-08-2005 at 10:58 PM

The 24th of June, my last exam, Systems and Control and that's it, all gone :D

RE: GCSEs by Zephyr on 06-08-2005 at 11:02 PM

I really wish my exams were spread out more. This week i have 8 exams, the week after is only 4 and the week after is 2. This week has just been constant work and there's still quite a way to go.

We do get a long holiday though and when you haven't got exams like inbetween, it can be quite fun. I spose it's all worth it in the end. When's the results out, I think it's the 27th August or something.

RE: GCSEs by user27089 on 06-08-2005 at 11:03 PM

I have 2 GCSE exams this year, and I'm really not looking forward to either of them... or do I have 3? I better god damn not!

Maths and Science I know I have... They're going to suck, I'm higher tier in both.

Yeh, something like that, we have this day in August where we go in and get an envelope with your grades in it or something. I think you get your certificates (with like holograms and stuff, official things) later. I already have a certificate of having a B in ICT. If I did better in my second chance, like i got an A, then I can get rid of the B lol :P
RE: GCSEs by user27089 on 06-08-2005 at 11:06 PM

That's what I hate, you won't know if you've actually got into a college until around 7 days before it opens, it's really stupid :s...

RE: GCSEs by jren207 on 06-08-2005 at 11:10 PM

Yeh, i applied for a multimedia course and they're like, well we'll give you a list of stuff to get for the course, then if you don't get your grades.. well that's a waste of money... :S

RE: GCSEs by tomfletcherman on 06-09-2005 at 03:40 PM

I havn't realy found exams stressful so far. I had all the easy exams before half term, and then I only have one exam a day from now on, apart from chemistry and electronics on the same day. Study leave is nice too, you don't have to spend long revising, you can go out and stuff.

RE: GCSEs by saralk on 06-09-2005 at 04:17 PM

I completely fucked up Histor today, I left out a 10 mark question and only did half of a 15 mark question :/

RE: GCSEs by Zephyr on 06-09-2005 at 04:21 PM

I'm so glad i didn't do history. My friends who did it were getting really worried because there was so much to learn. It was something to do with America in the last century.

I did French listening and reading today and i thought i would get away without doing much revision as it's only recognition, but there was so much i didn't understand and now i regret not revising for it much.

RE: GCSEs by absorbation on 06-09-2005 at 04:31 PM

Getting a good mark in french is easy, you must show tenses and that's it :P No tenses and maxium you can get is a c :S

RE: GCSEs by saralk on 06-09-2005 at 04:32 PM

Im ok at french, I thaught i did the listening test quite well.

It's not just that simple and you're talking about writing exams, i was talking about reading and listening. For writing, you also have to make sure you spell right, you get adjective agreement right etc. THere's a load more to it than just cases although they are very important.

For the reading today, the last question i found near impossible. There was so much i didn't understand. It was the one you answer in English.
RE: GCSEs by absorbation on 06-09-2005 at 04:36 PM

I'm not taking fench :refuck: i'm crap at it i'm taking history, geography, ict and drama :P

You're not doing a language? I swear everyone has to do a modern foreign language for GCSEs.

Geography is one of my favourite subjects and i'm doing it for AS as well. Good choice.
RE: GCSEs by absorbation on 06-09-2005 at 04:42 PM

In out school we dont, only a few people are we all have to take religion though and i have to take it a year eailery infact i'm revising for the summer exam :S

RE: GCSEs by jren207 on 06-09-2005 at 08:51 PM

I think the French listening went ok. Argh, I forgot the names for objects found in a bedroom, so I just put any two objects in English in the first part. It was like, "What two objects are in whoever's room blah...?"

I only have to do the American West paper because I did short course History, so our short course class is in with the other full course who are doing the American West as their paper 2...

RE: GCSEs by Zephyr on 06-10-2005 at 06:20 PM

Yaaay!:D No more English ever. The feeling when i came out of that exam was so great. I really can't stand English at all. How did everyone find it?
I think i did quite well, didn't obviously mess anything up, but really i'm just pleased that it's over.

RE: GCSEs by saralk on 06-10-2005 at 06:22 PM

I found the exam pretty good. I managed to write "bollocks" and "women dressed like whores" in one of my essays :p

RE: GCSEs by jren207 on 06-10-2005 at 06:52 PM

lol, I had an article about from Top Gear in mine today :P it called something like 'Boiling the Frogs'.

RE: GCSEs by user27089 on 06-10-2005 at 07:05 PM

You no longer have to take a foreign language in your GCSEs, it was incorporated 2003, it is only compulsary to take a foreign language until the end of year 9.

I've got a dodgy school then. We all had to take a modern foreign language for GCSEs. Not that it would have made a difference, I did two, lol.
RE: GCSEs by jren207 on 06-10-2005 at 07:41 PM

We sorta have to take at least one language because our school has the title of specialist language college... 8-)

and yes no more english ever sure feels good (H)
RE: GCSEs by Plik on 06-10-2005 at 07:51 PM

I had to write about some thing in the world that concerns me, so i ranted about how fishstocks are declining and how the government are "incompetant" in handling it.

RE: GCSEs by tomfletcherman on 06-11-2005 at 11:40 AM

In my language exam we had to do poems comparison, I did the hurricane hits england and one other poem, and then we had 'describe a nightmare world' for our description questions, which was really nice. My friend had a nightmare where he was still on 56k :dodgy:

I did the Hurrican Hits England and compared it to Presents from my Aunts in Pakistan. I'm terrible at descriptive writing so i chose the letter to the governors of the school saying about improvements to the school.

Most people did the nightmare one though probably because there were no limits to what could be written.
RE: GCSEs by mad_onion on 06-11-2005 at 10:32 PM

i compared Blessing to Night of the scorpion. then i did what worried me in the modern world. i did capitalism lol because thats the only thing i could think of. in truth i love capitalism but there you go. :)

I did those questions too - i kinda struggled on the poetry though, seeing as i missed all the work on them due to being in hospital :undecided: Second uestion was pretty easy, though i had to use my extra time :$

But good luck too all those doing them ATM, and hope ya all get the results you want in August or whenever! (Y)

GCSEs im taking:

English
English Literature
Dual Science
French
Maths
Geography
History (gonna fail this :S)
Applied ICT
Religious Studies (gonna fail this too :S)
RE: GCSEs by saralk on 06-12-2005 at 05:08 PM

I've only got 7 exams left.

They are

Maths Calc (im screwed for this one, i don't even have a calculator)
Chemistry (fair confident about that, going to a chem tutor for two years has helped)
Business Studies & Economics (1 & 2)(my strongest subject, so im confident about that)
French Reading and Writing (indifferent)
History Paper 2 (i am so screwed)
Physics

RE: GCSEs by Eljay on 06-12-2005 at 05:24 PM

i have 6 left

Maths Calculator (should be ok)
Chemistry (arghle :|)
History Paper 2 (crime & punishment = piece of pish)
Physics (should be ok but my coursework was like 2 pages of shite so i HAVE to do well)
and then 2 (compulsory) welsh exams, one of which is 20 mins, it takes me 20 mins to walk to school ffs

RE: GCSEs by Zephyr on 06-12-2005 at 05:27 PM

I've only got 6 exams left

Maths calc
Geography Paper 2
Chemistry
Statistics
French Writing
Physics

Only one i'm kind of worried about is chemistry because there's so much to learn. The others i'm ok about, but Statistics is 2 hours 30 minutes!

RE: GCSEs by saralk on 06-12-2005 at 05:54 PM

Im quite confident about the chemistry papers, i had a tutor and even though i hated his guts, he did teach me well, i know get around 80% in the past papers, which is around A/A*

RE: GCSEs by jren207 on 06-12-2005 at 06:45 PM

I've got left:

Maths paper 2 (Calculator),
Science Chemistry,
Science Physics,
History (American West),
French Writing,
and D&T Systems & Control

RE: GCSEs by -rafy- on 06-13-2005 at 05:42 AM

RE: GCSEs by Eljay on 06-13-2005 at 06:27 AM

aww man i have to leave for my 1 hour welsh exam in an hour :(

RE: GCSEs by Andre on 06-13-2005 at 07:18 PM

Heh, I chose my subjects (Not intentionally but it works out nicely :P) in such a way that I have zero full exams this schol year :D

I've just got the 6 Science modules (I do double not triple, had the chance to do triple but I'm too lazy) and I really don't think I'm gonna do well on the ones on the 28th.

So far I got B, B, B, C on my modules.

Otherwise, I'm taking...

Maths [Higher in November]
Science [Double]
English/Eng Lit [Higher]
Business Studies/BCS [Higher and it's 2 seperate GCSEs just in the same lesson]
Religious Studies [Full course, therefore today I got to gloat during lunch while everyone else was revising for their exam last period and I just sat and talked :D]
French :\ [Higher]
History [Higher]

But I guess PE doesn't really count though..

RE: GCSEs by jren207 on 06-13-2005 at 08:48 PM

Well I used to have to do end of year exams to determine what set I would go in the next year (plus my progress in the year). Lasts year's exams (year 10) were really to determine the tiers of papers I would take like Higher or Intermediate or Foundation etc. Really because I kept the same sets and teachers for two years (10 to 11). Like a two year course. Of course, now in year 11, i'm doing my GCSE's.

We did end of year 10 exams as well. I think one of the main reasons was to get us used to the exams at the end of the year to prepare for the real thing. It was also to help decide tiers and stuff.

Actually, you'd think that but RS is a mandatory subject (half course) at our school which everyone doing half course does in year 10. Those in Set 1 for maths had one exam last week and one tomorrow and thats their GCSE for Maths done. Quite a few of my friends are also doing their Geography exam in a week or 2 weeks time too.

RE: GCSEs by PenguinBoy on 06-24-2005 at 09:33 AM

EXAMS are OOOOOOVER, how i think i did.

French listening- ok
Music listening - ok
English lit - Failed miserably
Resistant materials - supprisingly ok
Biology - well
Geog DME - well
Maths non calc - Impressively
English 1- supprisingly well
Graphics - Very bad (if only the exam was on the pc)
French Foundation writing - very lightweight
English 2- Averagely well
Maths - Not as well as the one before, but still good
Chemistry - Pretty ok
French Foundation reading - REALLY REALLY HARD (surely foundation should be dooable seeing that i have been learning higher stuff, apparently the higher french reading was stupendously hard)
Physics - Not as well as i wanted

pretty average results i think. but freeeedom, and partaying, I hereby proclaim this chapter of my life... closed
