my dad wants to install a font on his secutary's computer, but every time he tries to copy the font over to the Windows/Fonts file, he gets an error message saying that the file is currently in use. RE: installing fonts by haydos on 05-27-2005 at 05:56 PM
You could try Start> Control Panel> Fonts and try to put it in from there. RE: installing fonts by Stigmata on 05-27-2005 at 06:17 PM
Control Panel -> Fonts. RE: installing fonts by Veggie on 05-27-2005 at 06:31 PM
If that doesn't work try restarting into safe mode then trying to install the fonts RE: installing fonts by SikStyles on 05-27-2005 at 07:32 PM
hmm..do this: RE: installing fonts by CookieRevised on 05-27-2005 at 10:32 PM
quote:no it wont. Fonts can't simply be copied. Fonts need to be installed like normal programs. (PS: and even then, why dragging it to the desktop first if you're going to drag it to your font folder? doesn't make much sense though; drag it to your font folder directly then.) RE: installing fonts by SikStyles on 05-28-2005 at 02:35 AM
quote: no i tried..like i download a font and then from the downloaded folder i drag it right into the font folder..and then windows wont recognize it as it occurs to be like a file that cant be open and when i have dragged the font to desktop the pic changes right away showing its a font file and then i drag it to the font folder and then it install perfectly RE: installing fonts by CookieRevised on 05-28-2005 at 02:44 AM
quote:because fonts need to be installed, not copied quote:then you're in luck and found a way to automatically install the font. Note that this action wouldn't only have copied the file, but also installed it. In other words, if saralk reports that he can't install the font, this action wont work either, because what it did was installing the font... On another note: it most likely worked because when you dragged it directly the file was still in use by your download program and couldn't be accessed. By copying it to another location (note "any" location, this doesn't need to be your desktop, since the desktop is nothing more then another directory) it could physically copy the file because it was no longer handled by your downloader and thus freed up. quote: I just drag my fonts from the location, into the fonts folder and they install. then i delete the origional file. RE: installing fonts by squall_leonhart69r on 05-28-2005 at 08:49 AM
WRONG cookie RE: installing fonts by saralk on 05-28-2005 at 10:47 AM
quote: they can be copied, but its all asthetics, when you drag them into the font folder, they get installed. It works fine on every other PC, apart from his secutary's. She is running XP Pro. quote: he tried that, but it still doesn't work . RE: RE: installing fonts by CookieRevised on 05-28-2005 at 09:12 PM
quote:No I'm not wrong, you are I'm afraid... Read this carefully: By only copying font files to the fonts folder you do not install them! (note: "copying" as literally placing a file in there; thus NOT "copying" as understood by the general public who uses Windows) When you use windows drag'drop, copy, or move features or whatever and you place a font file in the fonts folder, it AUTOMATICALLY INSTALLS it for you. That is: without you knowing about it. It SEEMS you simply copied it, but you did not, there is going on a bit more behind the scenes when you copy a font with Windows to the font folder.... Also, note that fonts don't need to be "copied" into the fonts folder in order to install them. You can perfectly install and use fonts located on CD-ROMS for example. And you can also temporarily install fonts by double-clicking on their icon/name in Windows Explorer. This will open a preview window displaying a sample of the font; as long as this window stays open, the font will be available in most Windows programs. ------------ @saralk, some wild guesses but |
