Suggestion - Search in contact list RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by Dempsey on 06-07-2005 at 08:13 AM
yea ive often thought about that, like I can remember someone's email but I don't know what their curretn nickname is, so being able to search for it would be good. RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by Purity on 06-07-2005 at 09:53 AM
Weird, i was gonna suggest this about a week ago but was caught up in soem other stuff. RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by RaceProUK on 06-07-2005 at 10:13 AM Or, just turn on Custom Names. RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by Lou on 06-07-2005 at 10:36 AM you COULD use custom names but if your list of contacts is like 150+ then you don't really want to spend hours renaming every contact so you know who's who. I mean who DOES want to do that? I would rather this feature be integrated in plus then not. or maybe just a plugin...as long as it gets the job done. RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by Mentality on 06-07-2005 at 10:51 AM
I must say, I use the custom contacts, took me ages to change everyone, and I have to keep doing it again everytime I have to format, or something goes wrong and I have to fully uninstall, this could be a good feature!!! RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by Millenium_edition on 06-07-2005 at 11:09 AM
this feature already exists, try using noroom's listmanager or Gilly Messenger quote:it's called backing up your preferences... RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by Mentality on 06-07-2005 at 11:13 AM
That a good point, when did I become so stupid, Or was that something from birth, I don't fancy using another server though, I'll jus back my preferences, Thanks! RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by RaceProUK on 06-07-2005 at 10:28 PM
quote:The whole point in Custom Names is you then won't have to search! RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by Lou on 06-08-2005 at 12:21 AM even that way wouldnt you have alot of ppl to do? I mean your telling me that you want to spend horus naming everyone...I have loads of contacts that I dont know their names....its kinda halarious but true RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by Dan0208 on 06-08-2005 at 05:57 AM
Even if you rename everyone with their proper names using custom names (which i have done) it sorts it in email address alphabetical order as far as i know. well at least it does on mine. So to find a contact you pretty much have to know what their email address starts with or scroll through your whole contact list anyway. and with 150+ that takes a while. Yep i know and i did read your post and even followed up on the links. but if you re-read what i said (ie. "if it were to be implemented") this kinda intimates that i would prefer to have it a feature of msn, msgplus, or a plugin rather than have to run a different client. RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by Derwan on 06-12-2005 at 01:39 AM
The easiest way to find a contact at the moment is to go into the Contact List Cleanup where you can sort by either current name or e-mail address. This is what I use if I'm not sure what someone's current name is but I know what their e-mail address is. Saves switching to view by e-mail address and back again. RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by sn1p3r on 06-12-2005 at 09:15 AM This has been requested a few times before but nothing has been done yet i would find this feature really useful as i have 237 contacts which makes it a pain searching through my whole contact list just to find one person. RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by CookieRevised on 08-30-2005 at 05:08 PM
Just press the first letter of the name of the contact, or his email, or his custom names (depending on what you use)... quote:Make it a habbit of renaming each contact you add. Also, making custom names for the entire list doesn't take hours at all, even if you have 300 of them; simply learn to use your mouse and keyboard. IT also is only a one time action, afterwards, you don't have to do it again. And the benefits are very big if you do. ------------------ btw, for those who didn't knew it yet, by using (!N) in the custom name, you add the original name of the contact also. Or you can select the option "Attach the original name" in the Plus! Preferences > Contact List > Custom Names. See http://www.msgplus.net/help_tutorials.php?tut=custom-names and http://www.msgplus.net/help_cmdtag.php If you make it a habbit of renaming each contact in the style "John - (!N)" then it is *beep* easy to find someone. PS: If you don't know the real name of the contact, use the nickname. ------------------ All in all, searching for contacts is very easy and I always find the one I'm looking for in max 3 secs (and I have +250 contacts). It all comes down to using mouse and keyboard and how you organise your contacts. RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by LittleK on 08-30-2005 at 07:16 PM

quote:Erhm... It really adds no value to my life if someone has " you always sweet sexy thing yadda blahblah" in his/her nickname Can't wait till everyone uses GTalk =) no fucked up useless nicknames RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by Chrono on 08-31-2005 at 07:25 AM
i do use custom names but it's still annoting to search for a contact, let's say, to see his email address. Even if you know in what group is, you have to browse through 40-50 contacts. quote:you have to know the email address to do this if you use custom names RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by Mille on 08-31-2005 at 07:35 PM
Replace the "msn search" at the bottom of the MSN main window with a contact list searcher. ;- ) RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by LittleK on 08-31-2005 at 07:38 PM

quote: Why not? they wont mind if you remove thier search bar? Its a good idea for the search, i said that myself, but just use the custom name thing and copy and paste the names into it... i wont be doing it myself though, as i havent got the time or patience, youd think in msn messenger 7.5 theyd have come up with something more exciting than just a voice clip button and moving the add contact around. Sheesh. RE: RE: Suggestion - Search in contact list by CookieRevised on 09-01-2005 at 03:29 AM
quote:nope, the search will be conduct on whatever is shown in the list, not on the underlying value. That's the whole beauty of it. Use custom names in the form of "contact name - (!N)" and you have the best of both worlds: the real name _and_ the easy to remember (and find) real name/nickname. And searching becomes very easy and quick. quote:Don't make it yourself difficult; organize your list properly (give each contact a custom name in the form of "contact name - (!N)" and your life will become much easier and you don't need any search thingie... If you don't want to do your 200 constacts at once, do them group by group each day. Once you have done it, you will see that it becomes very easy to find somebody. |
