Transparent Icons Help by J.J on 06-14-2005 at 02:29 AM

Well i've had this problem for a while now, and i've got no idea how to fix it

I want to get the background behind my desktop icons transparent like they used to be.

Right now they look like this.

I changed the colour of the background of the text in the icons once, just wanting to see how it looked, but then i wanted for it to go back to transparent, but that option isn't there.

Yes i've checked Google, and the solutions havn't helped, so maybe you guys could help me out

I found programs through google, but none of them really worked for me :undecided:

These solutions have not helped:

Open System Properties in Control Panel, choose the Advanced tab, and click Settings in the Performance section. Turn on the Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop option, and click Ok.

Right click on desktop > Arrange Icons By > Lock web icons on desktop

If the background picture isn't .jpg or .jpeg the icons will go that way.

They're always like that, even with .jpg or .jpeg files :undecided:
RE: Transparent Icons Help by Joa on 06-14-2005 at 04:23 AM

ok, go through these things, usually they are what causes the text background not to be transparent..

1. using a background item or desktop item that uses a transparent image or an animated GIF image.

2. setting a web page as the active desktop.

3. enabling "Lock Web Items on Desktop".. i know you said that you already tried that option.. but perhaps you enabled it so there is a checkmark beside it.

go here for clearer information:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305117

otherwise, i don't know what the problem could be at all :-/

Because that is what it is suppose to do... The background color is for the background for the icons (if you have enabled active desktop or locked web items on the desktop)

the format doesn't matter (at least in terms of PNG, JPG, GIF, etc). The subformat may matter though: It may matter if the image has transparency or animation. If that is the case Active Dekstop is activated automatically.

The two solutions offered to him are the only valid solutions there are, there is nothing else to offer...

Use 32-bit colour.

PS I have had the same problem with all PNGs (transparecy indifferent).

Wouldn't solve the problem though. Even when using 16 bit colors icon text can be perfectly transparent.

I always use PNG's as background and never had this problem...

Make sure the PNG's don't have a transparancy channel; even if you don't have transparent pixels in the image it doesn't mean the PNG doesn't have a transparent channel.

---

Attachment: PNG used as background, colors set to 16bit, icon text is still transparant...
RE: Transparent Icons Help by Mentality on 01-02-2006 at 11:05 PM

That's quit odd then Cookie, I'm not saying your wrong, but the image I was using, I just edited slightly in photoshop (no transparency tools used, just fixed some red-eye in a photo and a few touch up's) I set the picture as a background and my icons became non-transparent.

[go to
System Propieties -> Advanced options -> On Performance section

and find "use drop shadows for icon labels on desktop" check that]

I did that and it was already checked.

[Disable "Active Desktop":
* Uncheck "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" in Control Panel > System Properties > Advanced > Performance > Settings]

This also was already disabled.

I opened the file, chaned it to .JPG and that fixed it.

RE: Transparent Icons Help by CookieRevised on 01-03-2006 at 11:49 PM

Can you attach the PNG you've used/created...

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a383/Mentality182/DaveMeMike.jpg

The website I've had to upload it to due to size, has resised it because it was still to big for that. this is the old png image, but as I said, I changed it to JPG which made it work

RE: Transparent Icons Help by CookieRevised on 01-17-2006 at 02:44 AM

That's of no use... I need to unmodified original PNG which you used. Not a file which is altered by some service or converted to another format.

because:

Thus, as I said, it depends on the format of the PNG, if you're going to alter it or convert it to something else then the file/format changes.

thus not "link to remote jpg image"

;)

PS: Simply update the previous post with the PNG you've used with your desktop, the exact same one, unmodified (ZIP it if it is too large or send it by email in that case). I ask this (to update your post instead of making a new one) so this thread doesn't go too far offtopic with this. After I've recieved the PNG, I'll delete this post too....

;)

Yo guys i had the same problem and it's from " lock Items on Desktop"  .........................  BUT  ...............   that's because it's active from somewhere else !!!

all you have to do is the following :
right click on the dest top > propertise > desktop tap > click on customize disktop > web Tap > on the web pages white box uncheck all the marks > ok > ok and you are done

after that make sure that the use drop shadows for icon labels on desktop is checked on :P and have fun
