Received file blocked by xpirdwingz on 06-23-2005 at 04:30 PM

I was sent a file from someone but the message said that windows blocked it because it was potentially harmful. Is there a way around this or something that blocks files?

-Thanks in advance-

(sorry if this has been posted elsewhere)

Try this out:

"Windows found that this file is potentially
harmful. To protect your computer, Windows has blocked
access to this file."

To open it, follow the instructions below.

1. Save the file onto your computer.

2. Click Start, click My Computer, and navigate to
the file that you saved.

3. Right-click the file that you saved, and then
click Properties.

4. Click Unblock near the bottom of the dialog box.

Stuffplug, a plugin for Messenger Plus!, can disable this "feature".
The plugin also has some other nice features :)

I think the message he's getting comes from Windows XP SP2's Security Center...

Those instructions dont work btw, because the file isnt on the computer to start with.. not to worry. i'll give it a shot

What antivirus/antispyware and firewall software do you have?

i'm having this problem too its very annoying :(

You can use A-Patch to disable the protection. Tick the option "Remove File Transfer Protection".

:)

Mess Patch also removes blocked extensions, along with many other cool things, however if its SP2 that's giving you the error....grrrr damn SP2, i didn't even bother installing it. :P

I might try Ahmad's suggestion of the A-Patch. I won't need it yet though, luckily not many of my files get blocked. Is very annoying though :(. Those characters on your sig are cute, Tandy!
I have Symantec Antivirus software.

The problem is NOT related to the "you can't send file X"...
This is a new component for windows, something that protects your pc against vulnerable files (i doubt why Microsoft thinks that MP3's are vulnerable.. but hey...)

You can uninstall this "update", it's probably under the Software (in the Control Panel)..

To avoid these warnings, just go to the My Received Files folder, and open it from here.. Mostly works fine :)

I have the same problem... opening the file manually is at best a very annoying workaround. I have disabled the SP2 security center service too, that didn't help any either. Any thoughts?

You might be interested in the information posted at Blocked file extentions, even with mess patch :)

I read that thread, but I don't see a solution in there...

Hmm, it seems APatch doesn't properly remove the file blocking on the latest MSN. Stuffplug fixed it... weird, but solved :)
RE: Received file blocked by Floydian on 01-25-2006 at 09:53 PM

I relise this thread is ancient, but I was wondering if there is a patch that will remove this for Messenger 8 beta (Its not in the A-Patch)?

Either a patch or a registry edit

try to compress the file as a .zip or a .rar and then send or recive the file while it is still compressed.

File Extention Blocking is a part of messenger sence v7.0 it blocks exe's and other (so-called) Harmfull file extentions from transfering. Stuffplug NG can disable File Extention blocking. go to www.stuffplug.com to get it. and as WLM8 is only beta a patch is Very Unlikely.
