at the moment i have my speakers wired up to the audio jacks that are on the back of my pc...(but they are on my motherboard...)
what would happen if i put in a 5.1 surround sound PCI sound card to the headphones socket on the front of the pc?

Provided the sound card has a place to plug into, it shouldn't be a problem. Mine allowed me to plug in my headphones at the front AND at the back at the same time, but then I got an Audigy but it didn't have an analog output 
But anyway, you should have nice little wires attached to the onboard soundcard - just plug them into the new one, and it should be fine.
I've seen some dumb as front panels, I set up one where the connection to the front actually had to plug into the headphone jack of the soundcard itself, so it had a stupid wire coming out of the back

As already mentioned, the two cards should co-exist normally. If you do have problems though, then disable the on-board card in the BIOS.

It's no different from putting in any other PCI card
Do you already have another soundcard installed?

If you really want to try it, open up your case and follow the wires from the front headphone jack and see what it's attached to. (If your soundcard is nice it might have a little bit of writing on it too)
If you do get another soundcard all you have to do is move these wires, but keep in mind that not all soundcards do support this.
Don't feel scared to take a look though, you won't break the computer.
