Default user options by clarksons on 07-27-2005 at 08:44 PM
We need to roll out Messenger Plus! to 100+ financial brokers, with default settings. Is this possible? Can it be added as a feature if it's not?
We've already packaged the software into an MSI, ready to deploy through AD - which you may want to consider doing youself, to ease big rollouts. However, we can find no way to set default settings for all users - as the reg entries are all HKCU\...\youremail@wherever\...
We need to be able to do the following for all users:
1. Turn off the Wizard - it's fine for a home users, but not a Corporate Environment
2. Force logging on system wide (through HKLM, not HKCU - so they can't turn it off)
3. Use default settings for all options for new users
We'd be happy to cover development costs, as software is free.

there is a "Nobody" section under the preferences key which contains default preferences for all new users created if that helps in any way

Hi Jon,
thank you for your interest in the software. You'll be happy to know that any default setting can be created under HKCU\...\Nobody\. The only thing not coverred by this key is forcing the logging path in HKLM. Please email us at mplus@patchou.com to discuss the problem.
Regard,
Patchou

hmm Patchou, idea, it might be a waste so research would be necessary. How about making a corporate Plus!? Some simple prorgam with options to remove/add certain parts of Plus! etc?

You know, I once was about to post such suggestion.
On install, ask if you'd like standard MsgPlus! or global MsgPlus! for this kind of situation or for cybers.
The keys would be created depending on the install option, and there wouldn't be a need to mantain a second version.

Is the "Nobody" section documented anywhere? Do we create subkeys identical to to the structure under the users, or is it flat?
Surely, if this is default options for all users, it should go under HKLM. Otherwise anyone could change the default settings.
With regard to the "Corporate Plus!" discussed above, I agree. Most Corporates, us included, are concerned about rolling out software we haven't payed for and even more concerned that users don't need admin rights to configure them.
Patchou, I'll contact you via eMail to discuss options.
