Lardo Harddrive by [MR] on 07-31-2005 at 02:58 AM

I just bought a new hardrive with a 160GB compacity with an 8mb Buffer rate.  I currently have windows 98 SE on it, but it only recognizes about 8GB of it :S How might I make it recognize all of it.  Thanks.

Get a decent OS like windows XP and format it with NTFS.

(Problem Solved)

i might be able to upgrade it to XP but ill try it later so thanks...

wait no i cant b/c my monter only supports 640x480 screen resolution and Xp requires 800x600...any other way?

RE: Lardo Harddrive by ShawnZ on 07-31-2005 at 03:53 AM

no it doesnt... 8-)

theres only one other way, make about 20 fat32 partitons.

And, if your monitor needs 640x480 resolution, you REALLY need to get a better computer. Now.

no the computer is fine just need a new moniter thats all ...and ya windows xp does require atleast 800x600 screen resolution...thats what it says on the box...anyways you are getting off topic...i need to know how to get it to use the maximum compacity of the HDD

If your monitor is that old is it safe to assume your whole computer is also reasonably well-loved (5 years old)? It may not be your OS but rather the limitations of your motherboard, especially as you mentioned it only recognised 8gb. If this is the case even partitioning won't do anything.
Read about it here.

Try updating your bios, the manufacturer may have provided an update to remove this barrier.

no its not a well loved computer...if u had read the thread "computer Heaven in the Trash" you would have known where the computer came from...but ill tell u that i came from someone's trash and its just a computer that ive wanted, b/c it would be in my room unlike this computer which is in the living room so thats the onl reason i really wanted it.  im just trying to upgrade it with new parts and stuff instead of buying a whole new one b/c i dont make that much mowing grass and im too young for a job...if i had a job i would get a mac or somthing else real good in a heartbeat...im just mainly expirementing on 'em so i can learn even more to what i know

Did I just sprout a whole lot of bull in that last post? I dunno. One thing to check though, is your drive set to LBA in your BIOS settings?

RE: Lardo Harddrive by [MR] on 07-31-2005 at 04:30 AM

not sure ill have to check
and btw im prolly going to get a bigger moniter for free sometime soon ...

Compliments of Me:D
Well I think maybe you should try upgrading to ME or 2000 since your monitor can't do xp.
RE: Lardo Harddrive by ShawnZ on 07-31-2005 at 05:26 PM

I'd appreciate you to not neg rep me for telling you to get XP, the reason i said it is because Windows 98, 95, and ME don't support NTFS, but 2000 and XP do, and NTFS is what you need to store more data on a single partition.

:dodgy:

RE: Lardo Harddrive by [MR] on 07-31-2005 at 05:53 PM

well i had already told you i couldnt have wiondows xp on the computer...i was asking for another answer if there was.

RE: Lardo Harddrive by Garndell on 07-31-2005 at 06:23 PM

Your problem could be fixed with a BIOS Update or purchasing a IDE Controller Card (PCI).  Check with your Motherboard Manufacturer for the latest BIOS Update, failing that purchase a IDE Controller Card, as htey will support the increased  Partition Size.
