The sponsor, what you need to know by absorbation on 08-01-2005 at 03:41 PM

There are many threads about the sponsor bundled with messenger plus! I will try to answer all those questions not just removal instructions like patchou’s thread. :)

What is it?

The sponsor is by a company called c2lop and when installed adds a search bar to your internet explorer browser. It then displays popups depending on your surfing habits. It is therefore classified as adware.

Why is it there?

To keep messenger plus! free, patchou bundles the sponsor, but to be fair makes it optional. You decide here is you want it or not:

There is no warning of a sponsor why?

Well there is in 2 places:

Microsoft anti spyware shows it as spyware threat, high, you lied.

It mistakes the whole of messenger plus! Being spyware when it bundles option adware. This is there fault and you can send them an e-mail to them if you wish.

Ok, then so how do I uninstall the dam thing?

It is very easy to uninstall. Just go to add/ remove programs by going into control panel and select add/ remove programs. Or in xp go to add/ remove programs in my computer then on the left should be a side bar as you can see in the screenshot.

Find messenger plus! and select change/ remove.

Select uninstall only the sponsor and enter the code.

Make sure internet explorer is closed while doing this.

[Image: untitled196fd.gif] This video guide, made by me shows how.
[Image: untitled196fd.gif] In addition, this one shows how to install without the sponsor, also made by me.

I followed what you said, but it just won’t uninstall, why?

Well first, you probably used a scanner to remove it so it became corrupt. You could of deleted file manually or deleted registry settings. So reinstall messenger plus! with the sponsor and follow the same procedure.

Facts:

The sponsor is adware, not spyware, there is a difference
The sponsor is optional
The sponsor is easy to remove
If you ask nicely, the forum members will help with your sponsor troubles

Good guide, however a few adjustments that I believe would be suited to it are;

- In the section "Ok, then so how do I uninstall the dam thing?" you say go to add/remove programs. Now a problem I've faced in the past is that some less computer experienced users don't know where this is. If you just explain first to go to the control panel and make sure if they are using XP that it is in classic view, and explain the classic view button, it makes the guide easier to follow for these people.

- When the sponsor is uninstalled it is usually best to reboot the computer to remove any further trace of the sponsor, although this step isn't 100% needed, it is always best to say this.

- In "I followed what you said, but it just won’t uninstall, why?" it would be best to mention the possibility that they may have messed around with files and registry settings and not just adware removal programs to screw up the sponsor

- In the area explaining MS Anti-spyware it would be best to provide links to the following threads;
Microsoft's Anti-spyware Software...
Microsoft® Windows AntiSpyware (Beta)
MS Antispyware says Messenger Plus is adware
Microsoft ANtiSpyware Beta1 - False detections (not only Plus!)
some people like optional detail.

not needed, Add/Remove programs is a category in "Category View" so its just as easy to find in both

I remember reading that the Add or Remove programs was only added in category view in SP2.

Actually not everyone has that panel, there are options that disable it in the performance section of the control panel. It would be far much better to tell people to go to the control panel than in My Computer, since that option is there for everyone in control panel.

Actually not everyone has that panel in "My Computer", there are options that disable it in the performance section of the system control panel of Windows XP, which people on low-spec PCs often disable, also that option is only there in Windows XP, meaning your guide is useless for people using older Windows versions, you should tell people to use add or remove programs in the control panel, since this makes your guide work on older versions of Windows.

Edit: Fixed (Y)

Maybe you could also state that the adware version in MsgPlus! is not the same one C2Media offers and many people talk bad about, but a custom, stripped down version. *-)

Good job absorbation! I think it's about time somebody makes a good tutorial about the sponsor... The first time I downloaded plus I did the sponsor... but I didn't read through it carefully and see that it wasn't required.... Good job!

Few mistakes though, you might want to re-read the thing :)
