CABLE giant NTL confirmed today that it is to launch a 10 mega bits per second service. The announcement, predicted by us at the weekend, means that all NTL broadband customers will get the super-fast service by the end of this year.

Customers who already receive the company’s 3 mega bits per second service will be the first to get the new fast service over the next few months.

NTL said that these internet surfers’ usage allowance will also more than double, from the current 30 gigabytes to 75 gigabytes per month. The company said that a 10 mega bits per second service is ideal for family users and others who have more than one PC and for those customers who want to cut the waiting time for content to download.

Simon Duffy, NTL's chief executive said customers will be able to match speed, usage allowance and price to their individual needs. The roll out of the new products will be complete by the end of next year and there are 'no plans' to change monthly prices, though some customers will have to upgrade their modem.

'Our broadband services will become amongst the most innovative in the world and certainly well ahead of anything else in the UK. This is a major step towards delivering Britain’s digital future,' Duffy added.

Ahead of the full roll out of the 10Mb services, for those customers who want a taste of the higher speeds, ntl is set to commence a commercial pilot of its innovative flexible bandwidth technology. This new service uses a 'Turbo Button' to provide customers with the added flexibility to boost their speed, making a particular task quicker and easier, such as when downloading a video and image rich presentation.

NTL is the UK's largest cable company with 3m residential customers, and the UK's leading supplier of broadband services to consumers, with over 1.4m broadband customers.

OWN Opinions:

As of yet no word on uploads but i'm expecting somewhere between 512Kbit & 1Mbit.  Unmetered services might be available, for a price.

I'm on the 1 Mbit one right now.. 3 Gig Bandwidth is a bit crap but it's tolerable.. I seriously can't wait for that.. if they give us a decent upload too... *drools* I'll finally be able to seed properply on BT!! Right now I have to cap my up at 5 Kb/s otherwise it kills my connection completely, but I can get my down to hit 200 Kb/s in downloads with LOTS of seeds/peers.

I dont't have NTL but I do have an 8 Mbit connection with 1 Mbit upload, and for €10 more I can have 20 Mbit, but I first need a faster router for that speed :P, and in a couple of years they want to introduce a new ETTH connection, with speeds of 100Mbit :)

I'm AOL. (Yes I know, I'm ashamed :'() and that is 512kbs - unlimited bandwidth. It only tends to run at 430kbs but AOL just blame that on my PC, but I have 2.8GHz to spare :(. I wish cable was available here.
