Video/Audio for MSN on MAC by Maniac on 08-29-2005 at 02:38 AM
Alright, i have a little problem and i'm pretty sure there's a solution.
Back at home I have MSN Messenger installed for my parents to be able to do video conversations with me... only problem is i got a mac. The mac version of msn messenger does't support voice/video so I got adium, as helpful as it is for using all the different protocols in one program... it doesn't support video or sound.
I googled around and found Mercury Messenger which is still in beta and very buggy but that supports video and sound.... only problem is that for some reason no one can hear what i say (even if i hear and see the other end).
So two questions:
1) anyone know how to get Mercury to work for a two-way audio and video conversation
2) anyone know of ANY way that I could (from a mac) connect to the msn protocol and have a ideo conference.
The trick is I can't add any program back at home because my parents wouldn't know how to, so I have to find a way to do so from here!

I found this posteing on a Q & A page.
Q. Can I use Virtual PC on the Mac to use MSN Messenger, and so talk to Windows users that way?
A. In theory it might work, in practice I've not got it to work using Virtual PC 7 and a USB Logitech webcam. (Virtual PC will definitely NOT support the FireWire iSight camera). The USB camera required drivers to work on the Virtual PC, and installing them caused my iMac G5 to crash. Even if it did work, Virtual PC is NOT fast at this kind of thing and would probably not work very well at all with video conferencing. If you really need MSN Messenger to work quickly with video, it's almost better picking up a cheap PC.
So try useing a Virtual PC program with Windows installed on it.

That will require windows which I don't have... any simpler way?
