Making a connection with a rj45 cable by Jhrono on 09-05-2005 at 11:12 PM

Hi people...listen i have a doubt :
Me and my brother are formating our pc's, so he brought his to my house, to pass the files he wanted to keep first to my pc, so that when he finishes, i can pass them over...

My problems stand on this :
How can i make a stable connection between the 2 pc's...
I plug the cable, and yes i have a network, but, it says the conectivity of the  connection,is inexistent/limited, though, if i try to pass files from him to me, by 'my network places', (after configuring a Domestic Network with window's 'Network Configuration Assistant', that thingie in the Control Panel)It works like a charm...which doesnt happen when he tries to acess my shared folders, which gives an error...

And my other doubt is...
Can i make my brother have my Wireless internet on his pc?...like, through the cable...i can think of something named bridges, am i correct ?...

Thank you a lot for your time, if you can, please answer me fast...

Hmm.. I think you need to assign them IP address's, because they don't have a main DHCP server, and he can't have WIRELESS through a cable, unless you have 4-port switcher on your router.

My router has a 4 port switch, and i'm not saying for him to have literally a wireless connection, what i want is to share MINE through the cable!

for the internet part you need to set op ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) that works indeed with a bridge.

Not sure what OS your using?

XP, 2000?

But if you have a router, why share internet, why not just plug his cable in the router directly :P

Cause mine and my brothers pc are upstairs, and the router downstairs, which is far from here :P

About the sharing of the files, are you sure you set the usernames/passwords and stuff right?

On another note, you can allways use msn or FT+ to share your files if windows refuses to cooperate

the easist way would be to bring the router upstairs for the day. or buy really long cables.

with FT+ I meant File Transfer Plus, if you set the connection info right, you can enable it to transfer files within an LAN network and it's way faster than msn transfer :)
