The MSAS petition has been sent by Patchou on 09-20-2005 at 05:50 AM

Hello every body,

In only 4 weeks, you've been more than 400,000 to sign the MSAS petition. This number is simply incredible, especially if you consider that when the petition was closed, tens of thousands of new signatures were still being added every day. In any case, we think that 401,683 signature (final number obtained after excluding invalid/duplicate entries) should be enough to attain our objectives and if it doesn't, more signatures would probably not have been of much help.

The complete listing of signatures, which includes your contact information and comments, has been printed and sent to Microsoft today. The document was formatted with Times New Roman 9pt with borders size at minimum but still achieved to be 10,137 pages long! That's about 110 pounds (50Kg) of written support so thanks again for your help everyone :). Of course, as the petition was sent under all of your names, the results will be made public when and if Microsoft sends us a reply. I sincerely don't want this issue to go any further and I'm counting on Microsoft to realize that it's in the best interest of everyone to solve that detection/removal problem. Keep checking this page (or use the RSS feed) to know what happens next!

Patchou

tbh, the BBC in the UK would easily cover this story either on the news or on their tech shows.  They like covering stuff like this at the end of the news as a less serious based story. I would post on one of their forums or send them an e-mail to see if they would like to cover it, this would put some more preasure on the MS Anti-Spyware devision to get the situation sorted.

This is great! I used to use MS-AS but after how ignorant they have been i switched to Ad-Aware and will not switch back. Glad to see all the support, i hope it knocks some sense into them. Good luck Patchou!

I hope microsoft takes note of the petition and works with you in improving MSAS with regard to MsgPlus!. I wouldn't like to see this excellent program end because of MS.

Good Luck Patchou
RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by kangie on 09-20-2005 at 04:28 PM

No offence, but all it takes is to ignore msgplus once in the MS:AS, and it wont ever try and remove it... Bit of a waste of trees in my opinion :P

RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by user27089 on 09-20-2005 at 04:32 PM

I don't see why people should choose to ignore it though?

The false detection shouldn't be there in the first place really...

Software Bundler is trying to install!". In addition to discouraging anybody in their right mind to click "Allow", this message is, to put it simply, a lie. Messenger Plus! is not a "threat" and it certainly is not trying to "install itself on your computer", it's already been installed at this point and the program is just trying to run and do what the user expects it to do.

What kind of printer can take that much printing all in one go? Did you rent the National Newspaper's printing presses for a week?
I'm glad Microsoft got what they deserve :P

RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by blackjack on 09-20-2005 at 06:23 PM

Great! that number shows how much people loves and supports Plus! lets wait for a good reply of Microsoft, and  AS Team.

RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by stukindaguy on 09-20-2005 at 06:39 PM

That's what they deserve, good job Patchou!!!. My only question is "Why would Microsoft block it in the first place?". One answer I can think of is that Microsoft might eventually release an "add-on" that highly resembles "Messenger Plus", and are trying to get people to stop using Plus!.

Just a guess, I really have no sources.

it contains an optional sponsor
RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by stukindaguy on 09-20-2005 at 06:47 PM

I know that, but is that the REAL reason or is that Microsoft's way of covering it up, because it doesn't make ANY sense that they would block "Msgplus.exe".

LOL, conspiracy theory.

RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by Matti on 09-20-2005 at 06:52 PM

[Image: woot.gif] 10 000 pages?! 400 000 signatures?!
That's incredible! :D
Now hope M$ sees that they have 2 change their MSAS! :)

Thnx 2 all who signed the petition! (including me :P)

RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by prashker on 09-20-2005 at 07:12 PM

I really enjoy what Patchou does to keep this program running.
But if all our atempt dont get thru to Microsoft I will be one of the most maddest people in the world.

RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by albert on 09-20-2005 at 07:21 PM

Nice Job Patch! I would like to see some pictures though :)

RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by Patchou on 09-20-2005 at 07:28 PM

I don't have pictures of the boxes, sorry :p. The petition was printed at a specialised store with a big laser printer. The paper used was light and Microsoft have a recycling program so the impact on Canadian's forest should be negligible ;).

Everything was sent in 4 separate boxes by UPS. Should take about a week for the MSAS team to get the package, I hope they will take this matter seriously. If you can do anything to post this news anywhere else, please do so :).

RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by Plik on 09-20-2005 at 08:36 PM

You should deliver it personally and drop in on their desk and see if you can snap it :P

Hope it will make microsoft make a change in their definitions.

RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by AlohaSlick on 09-20-2005 at 08:49 PM

Congratulations, Patchou, for showing Microsoft the extent to which Msessenger Plus is supported by the MSN Messenger community.  The petition will be difficult for Microsoft to ignore.  Kudos also to the multitudes of Messenger supporters for getting together to make a massive statement to the behemoth from Redmond. Hopefully this effort will also demonstrate to Microsoft the wisdom of cleaning up the mess now known as Microsoft AntiSpyware ;):P .

RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by lizard.boy on 09-20-2005 at 09:11 PM

thats quite amazing. if Microsoft dosnt change its software for the better it'll at least bring a large amount of publicity, be it good or bad, to both msgplus and Microsoft Anti Spyware.

RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by prashker on 09-20-2005 at 09:19 PM

Hey pacthou if you removed the invalid written ones what was the files size? 10000 pages must be at least like 100mb?

Anyways could you post the document because I would really like to see some peoples comments :P

1,000,000+ sigs (and that was a long time ago that it hit that mark) for the MSN Messenger for Mac petition and MS didnt do anything until recently.

Sorry but unless this gets some serious media publicity I see it going nowhere.

No offense, but it seems like a big waste of paper even if MS has a recycling program (esp at a time where our forests are being depeleted)

Anyway, i hope all goes well for plus :)

Guys Now we have to take this to media. Mail this story to every media that you know. If we can bring it on TV, it will be publicity for Plus & also put pressure on MSAS[S] :dodgyomar:

I have sent this story to Clickonline at BBCworld (y)

RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by Laser_iCE on 09-21-2005 at 11:50 AM

Wow, the last time I logged into these forums was back in 2003 on the 1st of November...

It's good to see that you have the support that you do, Patchou, however, as previously said, I'm not sure about the impact that this will have... Sure, it's a lot of paper, and there is no possible way that it could be considered unnoticeable, however, petitions usually have no effect what-so-ever on their cause. You have my full support, I just personally don't think that it will make a difference, unless of course this makes it onto TV and some of the bigger news sites, otherwise it'll just be a thing within the MSN Messenger community that doesn't effect anyone else (YET).

Best of luck,

Laser_iCE

Making a MSN Messenger for mac is far more effort that to remove msgplus.exe from their 'malware' list, and add the sponsor instead (or not adding anything at all, as the sponsor is installed with the permission of the user).
RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by jren207 on 09-21-2005 at 09:46 PM

That's great Patchou. I signed and i'm proud to have my name in one of those boxes :) I hope Microsoft consider the situation, and that Plus! gets the good publicity that it deserves; and no more bad words about it and the sponsor which are completely different.

RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by HalfDead on 09-22-2005 at 12:07 AM

Another way around it would be to go the Messenger Discovery way (I personaly dont use the program) and show ads for 15 seconds or so in the install and remove the sponsor program completely so they would have no reason to have any flag for it

RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by crazihouse on 09-22-2005 at 12:20 AM

Wow! Good job! I hope they decide to change their minds and devote their ressources to real problems. It's so easy for them to take the risk advert. out instead of dealing with this.

This has to put some sense in them.

RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by Weyzza on 09-22-2005 at 12:38 AM

I just hope they see the problem more seriously.

Hello
Some posts gave me the idea to talk about this problem with French medias.

Where can I send my letter ? I'd like Patchou's ok before sending it to French medias....

RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by Patchou on 09-22-2005 at 06:04 PM

You have my ok :). Anybody wanting to do the promotion of Messenger Plus! is free to do it. Thanks :).

RE: The MSAS petition has been sent by Giulia on 09-22-2005 at 06:05 PM

Patchou, I prefer to submit you the letter before I send it, otherwise I can make mistakes, since my English is not so good. Maybe we can talk by mail or msn....

Thats not the point. The point is petitions do very little UNLESS big mass media is involved. The MSN Messenger for Mac petition reached CNN and some other major news groups and MS still didnt do anything about it. So this is gonna have to get alot more global mass promotion.

Messenger for Mac is a very different issue.. there are marketing concerns involed, it would cost Microsoft a lot of money to do it, etc... the petition for Messenger Plus! is just about misdetection and screwing up my users' computers as a result. I'm not asking them to do any work, just to make their software look more honest and fair.

Hi Patchou and fellow members  i just joined up since that i am a mdx member and since there forums are down.

I would like to say why don't you do somthing like Matt did and not make Msg plus with the spyware buddler.

Then i think that Microsoft might get off your back because your progam would be clean of those such things.

Now really Patchou there are other spyware removers which find your progam as well with the spyware buddler not only Microsoft.

But yes its only that Micosoft is the only one trying to shut this progam down because there big bullies and they think they can do what they please.

But i just don't see why even trying to get back at Mircosoft because no offence but 400k of people is nothing to them.

But they would pobly back off if you remove the spyware buddler off your progam.

The other up side if you remove it your progam well be smaller and qicker to download.

1) it's not spyware, it's adware (not harmful to your system)
2) Patchou has to have the bundler because he needs to make money to keep plus! free

The petition is against the way MSAS detects the plus sponsor. It detects all of pluses files and recomends to remove them, regardless of whether the sponsor is installed or not. What patchou wants is for either the sponsor files or the installer to be detected and for MSAS to leave the actually files of plus alone as they are malware free.

Any suggestions that dont involve him finding a job and not dedicating his time to plus?

And finally, dont forget that the sponsor is optional and gives you a choice to install it or not. Which IIRC one of the versions of msgdiscovery didnt.

fine what ever

and yes msd 3.0 had the buddle thing on it but too many people didn't like the buddle being on there

so in the new mdx versions there is no buddle in it at all

but anyway its just a suggestion you don't need to get seriours mate

But to get back on the topic Microsoft wont care about 400k of people really there are millons of uses who use windows and there bull shit Anti spy stuff which adware se and spybot are beta anyway

But there might be possible that they well do what Patchou is asking them to do i can't say i am not the owner of microsoft

The Messenger Plus! adware bundle has been there for a while, and a lot of the complaints have been taken into consideration, with the change of the installer, and stripping down of the adware bundle itself, removing any malicious content etc. it is now a safe piece of software.

Why can't we get serious, we're simply telling you the facts...

Microsoft will care about this, you think they will simply push aside 400 000 pieces of paper, I'm sure that they will remove the false detections of everything to do with Messenger Plus!, and simply detect the adware if it is installed instead.

I doubt the owner of Microsoft will deal with this matter personally, probably the adware department... Or those dealing with the definitions...
