Question on upgrading MSN Messenger by risk_reversal on 09-26-2005 at 04:25 PM

I was thinking of upgrading MSN Messenger from my current stable version 6.2.0205 to v7.0.0816 (supposedly a stable version also).

I have a quick question to ask. If I install v7.0.0816 and it proves to be problematic, how can I revert back to v6.0.0205? Do I go into add/remove and uninstall 7.0.0816? or is their another way.

Apologies for asking a silly question..........

Many thanks

I'm not sure how to get it back... but 7.0 is a stable version... They're coming out with 7.5 now... It's final I believe... And it's supposed to be stable also... I reccommend you update to 7.0 at least ;).

Yeh i think you should upgrade to 7.5! seems to be stable enough.
You can always just uninstall the version and go to 7.0.0.816 or 6.2.0208.
This page gives links to all working downloads of 6.2 / 7 / 7.5 that dont require you to upgrade if you dont want to :)

Thanks for your replies. If I upgrade to the newer version but it proves  'unstable' for some reason then unistalling will presumably remove the contact list.......(so I should save that prior to any uninstall). Is that correct please....

Thanks for the link hmaster

Cheers

no it shouldnt delete your contact list coz they come from MS servers ^o)
You should backup just in case anyway [ contacts -> save contact list ]

Most kind hmaster. May I trouble you for one last thing please.

>>You say ...'This page gives links to all working downloads of 6.2 / 7 / 7.5 that dont require you to upgrade if you dont want to'.....

Do I understand by your comments that I can have several versions of MSN Messenger on my pc....ie currently I have v6.2.0205 but I can also install v7.0.0816 also and have both. Or am I totally confused.......

Cheers

Well I meant that those versions dont force you to upgrade (eg 6.2 to 7) like some other versions do

but you can also have to different versions.

-install msn 6.2
-copy and paste the 6.2 folder and rename to MSN Messenger 6.2
-install 7 / 7.5

and make 2 different shortcuts :)

Thanks for your reply hmaster.

Ok so to be totally clear on this:

1. If I download MSN Messenger from the link you have provided, I will not be forced to upgrade my current version but instead will have 2 separate and functional versions of MSN Messenger on my pc is that correct please.

2. Alternatively, I can rename the current MSN Messenger folder (C:\Programs Files) to MSN Messenger 6.2 and then install version 7 and create 2 shortcuts to two separate MSN messengers.

As an example my children use AOL and have several versions of that program installed and they are all independant of each other.

Apologies for labouring the point

Cheers

No. Some older version of 6.2 and 7x make the user upgrade their msn messenger to the latest. The download links for 6.2 and 7(816) on that page do not make you do that.

Many thanks for your time & help hmaster. Appreciate what your are saying about just upgrading full stop. My questions were merely aimed at preempting any possible problems with the upgrade.

Cheers
