Trouble Signing in!! by Yuki on 09-26-2005 at 04:13 AM

Every time I try to sign into MSN, it signs in for less than half a second, then it signs right back out again.

It only happens on MSN, not on Windows Messenger.  And it only happens with one of my e-mail accounts, my other e-mail accounts can sign in just fine.  What's up with that? :S

MSN Messenger 7.0, Messenger Plus 3.0, and no plug-ins.

RE: Trouble Signing in!! by Yuki on 09-26-2005 at 10:48 PM

Yeah, my other accounts can sign in just fine.

And no, no one else has access to the e-mail account that is giving me trouble... :(

RE: Trouble Signing in!! by Yuki on 09-26-2005 at 11:49 PM

Nope, I use the same computer, and do nothing different.

It goes like this:

*I sign in with my main e-mail account*
*MSN signs in then signs out less than half a second later*
*I try to sign in again*
*MSN signs in then signs out less than half a second later*
*I try to sign in again*
*MSN signs in then signs out less than half a second later*
*I restart my computer*
*Same thing as before*
*I sign in with a different e-mail address*
*It works*
*I try again with my main e-mail*
*It still doesn't work*
*I sign in with my main e-mail on Windows Messenger*
*It works*
*I try again to sign in on MSN*
*It still doesn't work*

*I am frustrated* :P

You are using MsgPlus! 3.0? Sure? That version is extremely old...

Update to 3.60, maybe that will fix your problems.

RE: Trouble Signing in!! by Yuki on 09-27-2005 at 12:53 AM

Oh, sorry, I am using Messenger Plus 3.6 :)

And yeah, I figured it was an e-mail problem...
I guess I'll just have to get a new main e-mail account.  Darn.  And I really loved this e-mail address I was using. :P

Grrrrrrr...!!!!!  Alright, I made a thread here before about this trouble I am having. http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=50937&page=1
And I ended up deciding to just get a new e-mail address.

That worked for a while, I got a new address... but now this freaking thing won't let my old e-mail address sign in OR my new one!!  BUT!  My other e-mail address that I use very rarely still works.  It's like, every time I get an e-mail address that I use a lot, it doesn't work.

What the heck is wrong with this thing?!  I uninstalled everything and reinstalled!  Everything is up to date!  This is making me so mad!

how long has this being going on and is the address from a different country? the server maybe down. when this happens why co.uk does not sign in  but my .com does and all you can do is wait :)

The address is from the US.  And I know that the server isn't down because I can sign in just fine on Windows Messenger, but I cannot sign into MSN... while my other e-mail address CAN sign into MSN.

It's very frustrating.

Different MSN Messenger accounts could use different relay servers somewhere in the chain, although they all start from the same server...

Also, this has got nothing to do with Messenger Plus! being installed. Messenger Plus! doesn't do anything which prevents or tampers with the connection to the servers.

Anyways, what you could try is to remove the cache directories of MSN Messenger of those "faulty" emails and to remove the per-user settings of those "faulty" emails in the registry:

Deleting the cache directory of MSN Messenger

All the local cache directories of MSN Messenger and your MSN Messenger accounts can be found in the Application Data directory of the account you used to start Windows. These local cache directories hold information like your display pictures, custom emoticons, downloaded winks, etc.

The directory can be hidden (by default it is), so make sure you have selected to "show hidden and system files" in Windows Explorer (My Computer > Tools > Folder options > Appearance > Show hidden folders (or similar)).

The directories are located at:

For XP/NT/2K: \Documents and Settings\xxxxxx\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger
For 9x with profiles: \WINDOWS\Profiles\xxxxxx\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger
For 9x without profiles: \WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger
In short/universal: %appdata%\Microsoft\MSN Messenger

Where xxxxxx is the name of the account you used to start up Windows with.

Under that directory there are several subdirectories for each MSN Messenger account you ever used. To find the correct subdirectory for the MSN Messenger account in question you can use Choli's MSN ID Tool or the online tool/script of Segosa. Thus...

Deleting the cache directory:

  1. Make sure MSN Messenger is completely closed. If not click the MSN Messenger icon in your system tray and choose "Exit".
  2. Navigate with Windows Explorer to the local cache directories of MSN Messenger and find the subdirectory representing the MSN Messenger account in question (see above).
  3. Remove that subdirectory.
Note: This will also remove all your stored display pictures, custom emoticons, winks, etc.
  4. Restart MSN Messenger and try to sign in with the MSN Messenger account in question.

Removing the per-user settings of MSN Messenger in the registry

If the above didn't work, your last option is to manually remove the settings of the MSN Messenger account in the registry (and thus resetting them).

The per-user settings are stored in the registry at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger\PerPassportSettings

If you navigate to that registry key you'll see several subkeys. These are again those special MSN ID numbers talked about in the previous section. To find the correct one for the MSN Messenger account in question, use Choli's MSN ID Tool or the online tool/script of Segosa. Thus...

Removing/Resetting the per-user settings:
  1. Make sure MSN Messenger is completely closed. If not click the MSN Messenger icon in your system tray and choose "Exit".
  2. Open up your Registry Editor (Start > Run > regedit.exe)
  3. Navigate to the registry key shown above and find the subkey representing the MSN Messenger account in question (see above).
  4. Remove that specific subkey.
Note: This will remove (aka reset) all your stored user preferences for that MSN Messenger account.
  5. Restart MSN Messenger and try to sign in with the MSN Messenger account in question.

If all the above fails

Perform a global cleanup/re-install of MSN Messenger.

This means:
  1. Uninstalling MSN Messenger (Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > MSN Messenger)
    Note: do not choose "repair".

  2. Removing all the cache directories of MSN Messenger in case they still exist. This means completely deleting %appdata%\Microsoft\MSN Messenger.

  3. Removing the registry keys if they still exist. This means completely deleting:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger
    and(!)
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSNMessenger

  4. Reboot your computer

  5. Re-install MSN Messenger

  6. Reboot your computer again

  7. Try to sign in with the MSN Messenger account in question

If it still doesn't work

Contact MSN Messenger about it and explain your problem in great detail: http://messenger.msn.com/help/contactus.aspx

PS: please don't create new threads about the same problem. Simply post again in the original thread if you got more to add or if there are new developments... A request to merge the two threads has been made...

i am having exactly the same problem!!  it is driving me round the bend...

I sign in using my username.. and about 30 seconds later it signs me out again!!

I have done all of the above, twice! emailed microsoft but they havent got back to me after a week

The problem is, its only started doing it.. and I havent changed a thing that i know of!

I have 2 computers on my network and it does the same on both computers.

I have borrowed a friends account to see if its my account, and it does the same for her!

Has anyone got anything else i can try, before i have a breakdown????
