Webcam problem by Ann Almighty on 10-11-2005 at 12:51 PM

I have a problem with my webcam. I am using Logitech's QuickCam Express and it was all working fine until today. MSN Messenger says that my webcam is in use or not plugged into my computer. So I checked it at least five times to make sure it does and I restarted my computer several times and it didn't help. In the Audio and Video setup it shows my webcam but when I open the Webcam Settings it says that my webcam is either not plugged or is being used by another program - and both are not true.
I am using MSN 7.5 and my OS is Win Xp.

Can anyone help?

Someone else with the exact same problem as me. Except my cam is a Philips ToUCam Pro II.  And up till I reformatted it was fine, and now it won't work. Same OS, same version of MSN, same cam. It's annoying as fuck and I've spent the whole day trying to fix it. I even went into my router settings because i thought it might be the UPnP permissions.

I broke my router btw and had to go buy a new one. UPnP permissions are sorted. Still doesn't work. I've done the whole uninstall/reinstall thing a million times too.

Any help would be great!

Oh...and the cam works fine in Yahoo messenger and with Windows Messenger.

oooh I got a reply from Philips. Cam now works fine!! yay

To (re) install the camera properly, please follow these steps. If you install the camera on this system for the first time and also haven't attempted to install it yet, please start at step 6. These instructions probably look very exhaustive, and they are. This way of reinstalling the camera will prevent most known problems.

1. Plug in the camera
2. Remove all software for the camera from Add/Remove Programs
3. Remove all drivers for the camera from the Device Manager
4. Unplug the camera
5. Reboot
6. Go to Windows Setup in Add/Remove Programs and remove all Multimedia programs
7. Reboot
8. Install all Multimedia devices.
9. Reboot
10. Install the latest drivers for the camera
11. (Re) install chipset USB drivers
12. Reboot
13. Plug the camera back in
14. Install the software
