MSN Messenger and it's wasteful text format by quick brown fox on 10-31-2005 at 12:18 PM

One of the most annoying things about msn messenger in my opinion is the way it wastes so much of your screen space for no good reason (i.e. it doesn't make the layout clearer or easier to read). An example of this is the way that there are so many borders within borders in each chat window and the gap between your photo and the other user (which could contain some buttons or contact information).

Anyway, aside from all that, the worst offender of space wastage is the way that whenever anyone sends a message you get their name followed by "says" followed by a new line!

-------------------
John says:
hey
John says:
what's up
Jane says:
nothing much
-------------------

This means that whenever someone types a long message or several messages at a time they no longer fit in the window and i have to scroll up to read or make the bloated windows even bigger in order to have a reasonable conversaton.

I would much rather have this kind of behaviour:

------------------
John: hey
what's up
Jane: nothing much
------------------

As you can see, this took up just half the number of lines and is the kind of behaviour you get from programs like skype and google talk.

Is there any way that I can make Messenger Plus! make this happen for me? And if not, how about any other programs?

Thanks =]

No, there is no current way of doing so I'm afraid, there are no extensions released for MSN Messenger that can do such a thing, if it is going to be done, then it will be done by MSN.

oohhh :/
Do you think MSN will ever do it?

I just discovered that A-patch removes the "says" that follows every screen name, which is better than nothing. I'll e-mail the author and ask if he can extend that feature to what I want.

As said by Traxor, this is NOT possible.

This is simply the way MSN Messenger works, you can't do anything about it; there will always be multiple lines like that.

To do what you want means creating your own IM client.

PS: and even removing the "says" will cause several stuff to not work properly anymore.

Don't filter out "says", Plus! custom sounds feature needs it. See Custom sound feature error report thread.

luckily i don't care for sounds =]

Ok thanks for the info, folks. I guess I'll just have to live with the extra lines.

You could Resorce Hack the text itself, i would remove it from uifiles or msglang.dll for you :)

http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/
(if case you do not have it)

However this is a very basic way of doing and and the spaces where the text should be will still be there.

You _WILL_ have the same problems if you use the word filters to filter out the "says".

Don't say you don't experience these problems because then it means you don't have the word filters filtering out the "says". And if you don't have word filters filtering out the says it is useless to post saying you don't have problems. It would be the same as posting "I don't use Plus!, so I don't experience problems". It doesn't add anything to the thread....

Please read the given links in threads first to know about what is talked about before you wanna post something about it (again, we don't give links for fun) ;)...
