Hey Guys!

So, I read OSWD (one of my favorite websites for designs and such) is probably not coming back thanks to some political/control issues. So, I'd like some help in creating a new Open Source web design site.

Now, I need 2 kinds of help.

1. Designers!

We'll have a base HTML/CSS tempalate similar to csszengarden to base your design off of. I'm looking at making them CSS only designs. All the images and css submited will be available under a CC license.

2. Maintainers

I'm looking for 2 or 3 people (initally) who have a decent eye for design to help maintin the site. This means reviewing and approving designs.

Anyone intrested in helping? I've already got the domain and hosting. first thing on the block is a site design (which I want input on what it should look like) and we'll go from there.

I used to love oswd.org as well Although i hated some of the designs with a passion. I mean.. some were just ugly..

I agree. Some of the designs were just... well... awful....

Anyone any good with vector images?

Its ok. Dont really like the colours , and even thought IE is wack you should still try to make it compatible with it as its used by the majority :dodgy:

, 27/28 of students on my class use Ie..i'm the only one who can basicly define what a browser is..

Loading time is an issue with all the image slices

Also your html is a bit dodgy:

No doctype
added a html and head tag out of no where
title and meta are not allowed in div tags
also you use a table id then a width= and a height= which you should do in the css

That's pritty much it change that and it should be valid

Anyway, anyone who wants to participate, your designs need to be under the same template (which will be XHTML) and the only changes are CSS changes - no, this doesn't limit you in what you can do.

I don't think you quite grasp the project. There is no point in you starting a design tonight because the base HTML markup hasn't even been designed!

Basically all you need to do is use the base HTML, and without altering it, use stylesheets and images to create your layout..

It's going to be something similar to http://www.csszengarden.com except users can download the stylesheets.

My resume is pretty blank, I always kill off my projects because they don't get enough support.

I publish exclusively in XHTML 1.0 Strict, CSS and WML (for light handhelds). You can check out my (pretty lame) website Bloong (need to do something about that dot.tk |-) .)

I also code in PHP, which is utilised to a limited extent in my website (mainly the clock and few other little things).

I know a bit about legible design and colour matching.

These I can put together to build, and debug pages/sites/stylesheets.

I want to be a maintainer, but I can also help debug designs and give advice to people, but maybe I shouldn't be doing that.

PS Open source is good says rav0.

Well, I know Surfi will be helping on the administration side. Beyond that it will probably be a day or so before we know. Besides I want to get the HTML out to everyone to start styling.

so this will be some sort of cross between oswd and csszengarden, standard html and you just submit a css file instead of a full design?

The idea here being that the CSS you make would be applied to every page, and the generic index page just gives you a basic overview of how everything is styled.

If you look at csszengarden.com the designs very greatly and yet they are all very differnt.

We could always make a concession to having a set of custom html files associated to a template.

Well, exactly. We can provide standardised markup - but also allow users to specify their own if they want to go above and beyond what is provided by the basic structure.

We're pretty much right now (from what wj has told me anyway). He's going to design the base markup - and then we'll probably make different versions of it for those who want to make designs with (for example) 1 column, 2 columns and 3 columns.

I agree that load speed is really important. In this particular case "Coming soon" should be text, not part of the image (as a good design practice, not only for filesize).

Not just needs, really needs. I don't think that it deserves to be even given tentative validity, because incorrect character encoding screws up even simple things like quotation marks, question marks and apostrophes.

PS CSS is valid but W3C gives the warning "Line : 27 (Level : 1) You have no color with your background-color : body" which can be easily fixed.

I have a good eye for design.

I designed http://afhosting.net and various other past websites. Guido can give me the gfdd seal of quality. :tongue:

I am fully able to code to css standards (no tables) and I would like to consider myself good at graphics design.
