Beta testing without applying for it by Itsme-HcK on 12-20-2005 at 07:17 PM

I received this e-mail from Microsoft today:

quote:
Hello!

We'd like you to be among the first to try a new beta version of Messenger.

If you use MSN® Messenger now, we think you're really going to enjoy Windows LiveTM Messenger. It's as fun and reliable as the Messenger you already know, and you won't lose your contact list or any other personal information when you try this new version.

Some of the new stuff it will let you do:

    * Use Windows Live call to sign-up for MCI Web Calling to get incredibly low rates on calls to phones across the country or around the world
    * Drop documents into special folders that you and your contact can access even when one of you is off-line

      Join Now

Join Now
Please keep in mind that since this is a beta, some features are still in progress. And that we need your feedback if there's anything that doesn't seem to working right, or that you would like to see done differently.

And in case you were wondering about the new name, Windows Live Messenger is part of a new family of services from Microsoft® that includes Windows Live Mail (now a simpler, safer, faster mail), and Live.com (a new personalized homepage experience), to name just a few.

Thanks, and we hope to hear from you soon.

Am I that loved or...?
I didn't apply as betatester, and, as far as I know, I didn't receive an invite or got invited.
Does anyone know more about this?

I was already a tester and got this, so I have a question. Were you by anychance in the Beta Chat yesterday?

RE: Beta testing without applying for it by Supersonicdarky on 12-20-2005 at 09:56 PM

[sarcastic]irc is pathetic compared to it :dodgy:[/sarcastic]

RE: Beta testing without applying for it by ipab on 12-20-2005 at 10:02 PM

it was the worst chat ever, no real questions were ever answered, they were all evaded with the standard respon "Thank you for your suggestion, we will look into it".

RE: Beta testing without applying for it by ipab on 12-20-2005 at 10:46 PM

yes it does, and mine was given to the theunknown.

RE: Beta testing without applying for it by Itsme-HcK on 12-20-2005 at 10:49 PM

For what I can see of it (it's hidden, mostly), it's the same.
The Messenger I downloaded also works. ;)

[later]
I copied the URL's it directed me to:

That sure looks like Microsoft. :P (All those tokens, for the suckers who don't understand.)

RE: Beta testing without applying for it by Menthix on 12-20-2005 at 11:01 PM

Like i said in the other topic:

Accept it and log into http://ideas.live.com/mainpage.aspx

It will say...

quote:
Welcome, <NAME>
Thanks a lot for being part of Windows Live Ideas. You're a member of following invitation only beta(s):
  • Windows Live™ Messenger beta

Then you're sure you are on the invite only beta. You'll know when you're in the managed beta anyway since you'll get access to Connect and private newsgroups then.
RE: Beta testing without applying for it by Itsme-HcK on 12-20-2005 at 11:07 PM

Mine says "exclusive", but still, how did I get it?

read the mail again, instructions are included (eg: "join now" and that stuff)
RE: Beta testing without applying for it by Itsme-HcK on 12-20-2005 at 11:36 PM

You don't get my question, do you?
Let's put it this way: Why did I receive a( n) (invite) mail to join the bètatesters? Why me? I didn't apply somewhere, and I didn't ask someone for an invite...

I do get it, though I might have misinterpreted it :p (be a bit more clear next time ;))

Your question was "how?", not "why?" and since ipab already asked if you were in the beta chat and you didn't answered him I assumed you were and that was that.

anyways,

- Someone send you an invite
- You are already part of some other (beta) program
- You have been in contact with MSN before (bug report, (beta) chat, whatever)
- A mixup has occured
- Microsoft feels you're very special

edit: @ipab: oops :$ corrected
RE: Beta testing without applying for it by ipab on 12-21-2005 at 12:03 AM

seems like my theory doesn't hold, many other people who were in the beta chat yesterday didn't get an invite like me. Perhaps it might have been a random selection out of the beta chat members.

offtopic:
cookie its ipab :p

RE: Beta testing without applying for it by Primexx on 12-21-2005 at 06:42 AM

wait, so non-beta testers could join a beta chat? which chat would that be?

RE: Beta testing without applying for it by *Saint* on 12-21-2005 at 07:09 AM

no, probably a beta tester gave them the link to the chat and the password to get into it.

Was I invited by someone, or Microsoft "invited" me? :S
RE: Beta testing without applying for it by hmaster on 12-21-2005 at 02:48 PM

I think you were invited by MS

When you are invited the subject is:
Check out Windows Live Messenger
And the "From:" part is the email of the person inviting you.

It all greatly depends on when you were invited, in which countyr you live, etc... etc...

Remember that invites from MS are also send in batches. And above all, it depends from where they are send and when, who send it and why, etc.... Not all mails are exactly the same!

I'd say the last Microsoft feels you're very special going by the email address of the sender. This is the address Microsoft is using for sending out invitations to potenial beta testers

Officially no. The Beta chats are only for the members of the Managed Windows Live MEssenger Beta.

To put it very bluntly: that means jack-sh*t. Those fields can easly be spoofed. Never judge the authenticity of an email on the sender's email address!
RE: Beta testing without applying for it by Vilkku on 01-12-2006 at 08:14 PM

When I sent a invite to somebody the mail looked like this:

quote:
quote:
Don't make it a habit :P I don't have any more invites for people I don't know personally now.
Hello!

We'd like you to be among the first to try the beta version of Windows LiveTM Messenger.

If you use MSN® Messenger now, we think you're really going to enjoy Windows Live Messenger. It's as fun and reliable as the Messenger you already know, and you won't lose your contact list or any other personal information when you try this new version. Check it out to experience new ways to connect to your friends via text, voice, video, and more.

<Download now>

And in case you were wondering about the name change, Windows Live Messenger is part of a new family of services from Microsoft® that includes Windows Live Mail (now a simpler, safer, faster mail), and Live.com (a new personalized homepage experience), to name just a few.

Thanks,

The Windows Live Messenger team

As you see, it's not the same as the one posted n the first post... so it might have been a invite directly from Microsoft?

Yes Cookie, i know these can easily be forged. I was just trying to differentiate between the whether the invite was sent from someone else or from Microsoft. Of course the message headers should be checked to verify the authenticity of a e-mail such as this.

In this case, invites sent from a particular person will most probably have the same (or very similar) message headers as Microsoft servers are still sending the message on someone elses behalf. Thus the only other way to differentiate between the two is by looking at the email address (or at least that i know of)
