Something weird about MsgPlus... by Kev.geno on 12-31-2005 at 02:17 AM

You see, before I updated to the newest version of MsgPlus, I could sign-in to MSN Messenger with full MsgPlus capabilities without actually having msgplus.exe residing in the memory.

I dont know how I actually did it but I disabled msgplus.exe from windows startup, and when I start Messenger the MsgPlus options would still be there.

But now that I've updated to the latest MsgPlus, I have to let msgplus.exe be active to have MsgPlus loaded when I start Messenger. If I disable msgplus.exe from startup or kill the task, I wont have the MsgPlus options when I start Messenger.

So what I want to know is, how do I get MsgPlus to load without actually having the .exe active? It was possible before... the .exe takes up precious 6 megs...

In the main contact list window, go to Plus! > Preferences > Miscellaneous. Then at the bottom of this area, there is a dropdown box, choose "Alternate Mode". I think this is what you're looking for.

(Not 100% though, worth a try.)

It might have forced that option before due to a Plus! loading error.

The way Alternate works means that the EXE doesn't have to be running at all. Instead, the loader DLL is automatically attached to each and every process.

Once the computer has been rebooted (that's very important), the Alternate Hooking Method can be set again in the preferences.

How to set alternate mode:
- Plus > preferences > miscellaneous..under Messenger Plus! Automatic Recovery Options, set it to "Alternate".
- Reboot
- Start MSNM and check if it's still in alternate mode
- Ctrl alt del to go to taskmanager and in processeslist end msgplus.exe
- Now restart MSNM and see if Plus! appears in the menu, if so "alternate mode" is working fine.
- After checking you can remove Plus! from startuplist by going to: start > run ..type: msconfig <enter>, go to startuplist and uncheck MsgPlus

Alternate mode is new and only available in Windows 2000/XP. Make sure you got no programs running preventing writing in the registry whilst setting it to "alternate mode".
