MSN *and* Windows Messenger - problem? by dobby on 01-04-2006 at 02:25 AM

Hi,

XP PRO US-English SP2, fully up to date,
MsgPlus! 3.62.146 english
MSN Messenger 7.5.0322 english
Windows Messenger 5.1.0680 english

Normal order of things: MSN Messenger loaded at startup; usually no problems.

After a while Windows messenger is started (manually) as well, using another .NET account ofcourse (and a SIP account, but that would probably be irrelevant to MsgPlus! anyway).

Now almost every time MsgPlus! finds that it is not integrated w/ Windows Messenger (no problem w/ MSN messenger), and pops up the familiar recovery window; dully selecting the recommended 1st option (Repair and restart), the following problem arises:

It signs out and closes *both* MSN- and Windows Messenger, but only restarts MSN Messenger

Any ideas? fixes? workarounds??
More info needed?

thanks for an otherwise great program!

dobby

Try reinstalling Msg Plus!... umm.... I don't really know what else you could do.

Have you tried toggling the different hooking methods of Plus! (found in Plus! > Preferences from contact list, or by sending /config in a conversation window)? This could stop it affecting Windows Messenger as it is.

A side note, well done and thankyou to dobby for your well set out, informative post. It's very rare to see new members posting this much information and it makes it easier to get your problem solved(y)

None of you seem to remember that, when using WinMsg and MSNMsg together, WinMsg must be started first for Plus! to hook both properly. As for restarting only MSNMsg, Plus! is designed for MSNMsg more than WinMsg.

Oops.. didn't see that anywhere documented.. Ok then, different question, change of plans:

Is it possible to have MsgPlus! totally leave Windows Messenger alone, i.e. just ignore it? that would be an acceptable solution, at least in my case?

edit: typo

There is a registry you can add to tell Plus! not to integrate into Windows Messenger:

HKCU\Software\Patchou\MsgPlus2 -> AttachToWinMsg
Its type is DWORD and if you set it to 0, Plus! will not attach itself to Windows Messenger.

For detailed descriptions please refer to http://www.msgplus.net/help_registry.php

Of course, alternatively you can use Plus! Tweak to set this option :)

Great - thank you very much  - one more "REG ADD" added to my logon scripts.

(yeah - it's probably persistent, but I tend to take my scripts with my on USB stick in order to have my environment with me all the time)

Hm.. looks I was skimming way to fast through that.. the value is even fully documented.. oh well... my apologies to all for not researching before asking..

Will have a look - might have missed a few more things as well..

But ok - recap: case closed as far as I am concerned; the bug (ie not restarting what got closed) still might be present, but it's not relevant to me anymore.

Thanks again to all posters for all reactions.
